Bright & Early: Chop Chop Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We apologize for being M.I.A. this week! Let’s catch you up on some of the latest news:

  • The State of Tennessee is planning for the worst by coming up with a plan for handling a 15 to 30% cut in federal funding, which is a thing that could happen! [WKRN]
  • In other important news, Nicole Kidman has decided to change the name of Hillsboro High School to Middle Bend High School, at least for a couple of days. They’ll be out there shooting her new movie soon, and we can only hope those awesome green donkey signs make it into a few scenes. [Tennessean]
  • There’s a good chance Davidson County could be split up among three congressional districts during the next redistricting. [Tennessean]
  • Nashville food trucks and the Metro Council are still working to lay out some ground rules for mobile vendors. [City Paper]
  • CJ2K was placed on the reserve/did not report/would rather be sipping raspberry lemonade list by Titans officials this week. [WKRN]
  • Nearly 1 in 6 Tennesseans relies on food stamps. [WTVF]
  • The Tennessee Highway Patrol and National Guard are doing that thing where they hunt for marijuana farms from the sky. [WKRN]
  • Remember our neighbors in Perry County with their 30% unemployment rate back in 2009? Governor Bill announced that a Michigan-based automobile parts facility will be moving into town next year, creating as many as 400 jobs. [WTVF]
  • This is in no way shocking to anyone ever, but 12 South residents are getting a little worried about the traffic situation down there. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Won’t You Be His Neighbor Edition

Good morning, Nashville, and happy Friday! Your morning headlines:

  • John Rich would like you to consider being his neighbor! Yes, really. [WTVF]
  • Despite all the drama with his contract negotiations, the Titans say they’re not even considering a Chris Johnson trade at this point. [Tennessean]
  • According to the census data from 2010, Tennessee had a higher-than-average divorce rate in 2009 with more than 11 out of every 1,000 men and women calling it quits. [WKRN]
  • Speaking of census data, it shows that Tennessee has 6.5 same-sex households per 10,000. [Out & About]
  • Hey Maury County Fair, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency called and they would like their salmonella-laced turtles back. [WTVF]
  • The Preds are getting a new flagship radio station! Next season you’ll be able to catch ‘em on 102.5 The Game. [City Paper]
  • Dozens of folks headed out to Senator Bob Corker’s office yesterday to let him know they were kind of angry that Congress isn’t creating more jobs. [WTVF]
  • Our children are not as unhealthy as they used to be, relatively speaking. So hooray for that! [WZTV]
  • “Americana” has made its way into the dictionary this year, along with “tweet” and “bromance.” [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Seeing The Light Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Your morning headlines:

  • Much like the country was doing a few weeks ago, Tennessee is trying hard to keep its credit rating from plummeting, which would be kind of bad!  [Tennessean]
  • Gone are the days of the Cheerios running around in their cheerleading uniforms all day at school, at least for Brentwood Middle School. Parents are up in arms that cheerleaders now have to wear sweatpants under their uniform skirts during school hours. We only WISH someone would make us wear sweatpants all day. [WKRN]
  • If Belmont seems to be taking over, it’s because their enrollment just exceeded 6,300–114% more than it was in 2000. [City Paper]
  • Well, well, well! Look who decided to come out of retirement already. [Tennessean]
  • For those playing along at home, Chris Johnson’s meeting with Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt was fairly unproductive. [City Paper]
  • Gibson Guitars had a bit of a rough day yesterday when the feds raided them for some reason. This isn’t the first time it’s happened, though: Back in 2009, they were raided for possibly importing endangered wood and plant material, but nothing ever came of it. [WKRN]
  • Even former Governor Phil has jury duty. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Shake ‘n’ Bake Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Here’s what’s shakin’. And we’ll give you a hint: It’s not us!

  • We’re glad to hear that our friends and family on the East Coast made it out relatively unscathed from yesterday’s earthquake. Apparently it was even felt in parts of northeast Tennessee. [WTVF]
  • This news is second only to the canisters of, uh, bull semen spill that shut down I-65 yesterday morning. Yes, this is a thing that actually happened. [WKRN]
  • And just as quickly as parents voted on it, the Metro school board chose to adopt the wonky new calendar starting in the 2012-13 school year. Students are slated to start back in July. [City Paper]
  • Perhaps this will do something to improve Metro’s ACT scores, which are evidently “abysmal.” [City Paper]
  • Chris “Every Coach’s Dream” Johnson took a break from sippin’ raspberry lemonades to meet with Titans officials yesterday and talk about contract negotiations. We’re not sure what this means, but we may or may not be refreshing his Twitter account every three minutes until we find out. [City Paper]
  • We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: Wilson County sure as heck knows how to put on a fair. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Castle In The Sky Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Your morning headlines:

  • Metro Schools officials polled parents and found that just over half of them actually prefer the idea of a “balanced” school calendar to the regular one. With the balanced calendar, kiddos would probably start in late July or early August and give up a couple of weeks of summer break in favor of longer fall and spring breaks. [WKRN]
  • After an off-season full of more run-ins with the law than we care to keep track of, Kenny Britt is slated to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell today to talk through his adventures. Though Titans coach Mike Munchak let him off without any sort of punishment, he could be looking at some sort of disciplining measures from the league. [Tennessean]
  • Police are having a tough time figuring out who exactly was at fault in a scuffle between former District 5 councilwoman Pam Murray’s son and a guy who was allegedly trying to take down her campaign signs at the request of a property owner. The fight landed the latter in the emergency room, but the officer on the scene couldn’t tell who attacked whom first. They were both referred to the DA’s office to press charges if they felt like it, but neither has done so yet. [Tennessean]
  • It’s going to get hot again! Seriously, bring on the fall. We’re over it. [Nashville WX]
  • The famous alley between the Ryman and Tootsie’s could be getting a makeover soon, as it’s apparently becoming a more popular tourist destination. Over the years, it’s been used by music legends like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams to slip out during a show and grab a drink from one of the Broadway honkytonks. [City Paper]
  • As of yesterday afternoon almost 1,400 Metro students still didn’t have the vaccines they needed to go to school. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Moving On In Edition

Good morning, Nashville, and an extra “good morning” to all the college students who moved in at Vandy, Belmont, TSU, Lipscomb and Trevecca over the weekend. Incoming TSU freshmen, we hope you enjoyed your medallion ceremony. Incoming Vandy freshmen, we’re not sure why you were all covered in giant round stickers, but we enjoyed weaving our way through you, your parents and your eighteen shopping carts at Target on Saturday. We kid, we kid (sort of). Welcome to Nashville (or welcome back), everyone!

  • The Rams squeaked a field goal past the Titans in the final seconds of Saturday’s preseason game in St. Louis, putting them ahead to win 17-16. In other Titans news, they’re getting uncomfortably close to their season opener without reaching a deal with star running back and rapper extraordinaire, CJ2K. CJ seems to be making good use of his time off, spending his time at bars sipping raspberry lemonade and gloating on Twitter. [City Paper, Tennessean]
  • Tennessee state agencies are preparing to submit plans that cut up to 30% of their annual federal funding by this Wednesday. [Tennessean]
  • More loft apartments are coming to the Gulch. The 305-unit Pine Street Lofts will be rental properties with retail space underneath, and the first units will be available late next year. [Nashville Post]
  • Commuters, rejoice! Plans to widen I-65N past Trinity Lane have begun. [WKRN]
  • More froyo, anyone? We’re not exactly sure how Red Mango plans to find a location that isn’t within spitting distance of a Sweet Cece’s, but they’re sure going to try. [Nashville Post]
  • A Madison man has found success peddling “Band Angels,” which are apparently are adhesive bandages with Bible verses on them and not the other kind of Band-Aid. [Tennessean]
  • Breaking news! AP wants us to know that traffic in Pigeon Forge is bad. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Gotta Get Down On Friday Edition

Good morning, Nashville, and happy Friday! Here’s what’s going on around town this morning:

  • Transportation for America found that our town is not exactly the safest place to be a pedestrian. [WTVF]
  • Opryland Hotel is getting things underway for the holiday season by bringing on 450 seasonal workers. If you’re interested, go here to apply. [WKRN]
  • Metro Councilman Jamie Hollin was finally able to get the council to pass as resolution honoring high school students who protested the infamous “Don’t Say Gay” bill earlier this year. [WPLN]
  • LaVergne doesn’t get much in the way of publicity, but they’ve been ranked one of the top 25 most affordable cities in the country according to Money magazine. So, we guess that’s something. [WTVF]
  • Congrats to our Nashville Rollergirls who have qualified for a spot in the WFTDA South Central Region Playoffs! [Out & About]
  • Remember when everyone thought that thousands of dead birds and fish everywhere were ushering in the apocalypse? Three thousand dead fish were found floating around in a Murfreesboro pond this week. [WTVF]
  • A Brentwood robbery victim who was forced to hand over his phone turned to Facebook to tell friends to call the police. [WKRN]
  • Nashville is not immune to the teen sexting trend as Metro has seen several child porn incidents in which juveniles have been the perpetrators. [WKRN]
  • Eleven new Tennessee sites were added to the National Register of Historic Places including Fort Nashborough (finally!) and the Tennessee State Office Building. [WTVF]
  • If the kiddos haven’t had their immunizations for school yet, officials will likely start sending them home today. [WTVF]
  • In exchange for a picture with Keith Urban, a midstate teacher has vowed not to assign homework to her students for the rest of the year. Thanks, Keith! [WTVF]
  • So the good news is that Tennessee’s unemployment rate didn’t go up for the month of July, but it also didn’t go down. [WPLN]

Bright & Early: Next Train Home Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Quick tour of the headlines this morning:

  • Shea Weber unloaded his condo in Hillsboro Village for a cool $320,000. He still owns a house in Green Hills, so he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. His $7.5 million contract doesn’t hurt, either. [Nashville Post]
  • Speaking of Green Hills, we’re getting a bookstore again! A real, live bookstore. [Tennessean]
  • Hot and stormy today! [Nashville WX]
  • You can now pay for parking with your phone, at least in Premier Parking lots. Just register here and grab the smartphone app for your iPhone, Android or Crackberry. [Nashville Post]
  • On average, Tennessee’s ACT scores have gone down by 0.1 point in the past year. Study up! [WTVF]
  • The folks at Vanderbilt University included Wiccan holidays in their calendar of religious holidays for which students are excused throughout the school year. [WKRN]

Bright & Early: Doe A Deer Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Your headlines this morning;

  • TDOT has added some new shared bike lanes on James Robertson Parkway. Shared bike lanes are just like regular bike lanes, but slightly wider and with cars. Okay, yeah, we don’t get it either. [WTVF]
  • That tainted beef recall you might have been hearing about includes Publix and Kroger stores in Tennessee, so check yo’ beef meat. [Tennessean]
  • Metro Schools had crazy-high principal turnover this year with 33 new principals on the job this time around. [City Paper]
  • The TVA is knocking a whole 50 cents off of our bills in September. If you’re really lucky, you could see a savings of as much as $1.50. [WZTV]
  • Spring Hill voters put their collective foot down and decided to make the city stop adding fluoride to drinking water. [WTVF]
  • Perhaps Wilson County should show the State of Tennessee how a fair is really done. [WTVF]

Bright & Early: Monday Monday Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Here’s your tour of the headlines this morning:

  • Five people were killed and dozens injured on Saturday as a stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair ahead of Sugarland’s performance. [CNN]
  • We’re not sure how many of you stepped outside last night or early this morning, but we could swear we feel fall in the air. Though things will start to warm up as the week progresses, we’ll definitely be enjoying temperatures in the low to mid-80s today without any of that nasty humidity. [Nashville WX]
  • As awesome as Jake Locker did on Saturday (what can we say, we’re fans), the Titans still say Matt Hasselbeck will be keeping his starting QB slot for now. [Tennessean]
  • If you want to bring your baby to a bar, Holland House is no longer the place to do that. [Tennessean]
  • It could be a while before the Spring Hill GM plant reopens, though it is near the top of the list. [Nashville Post]
  • Omni Hotels Chairman Robert Rowling now owns 21% of Gaylord through his investment fund TRT Holdings. [Nashville Post]
