- Storms rolling through Middle Tennessee this weekend knocked out power and damaged homes and businesses, prompting several area school districts to close today.
- The company owned by developer Tony Giarratana has announced plans for a 33-story residential tower on Church Street that definitely doesn’t look like any other building in Nashville. If approved, it could open as early as 2022.
- Vice Mayor Jim Schulman has announced eight special committees comprised of as many as five citizen members to explore specific questions facing the city. The committees will provide a report back to the Metro Council.
- State officials are recommending that three charter schools in the Antioch area that part of the Knowledge Academies should remain open in spite of poor academic performance and accusations of fraud. The State Board of Education cited lack of evidence needed to shut them down.
- The director of the Community Oversight Board has asked Mayor John Cooper to intervene in the impasse between the board and the Metro Nashville Police Department, as neither side has made progress in defining how they will work together.
- For the Nashville Scene’s “Sex Issue,” JR Lind wrote an interesting piece about Nashville’s brief period of legalized prostitution during the Civil War, involving a river boat named “Idahoe.”
- This past weekend was “Politicon,” attended by folks from all over the country and 100 percent not attended by anyone on your Nashvillest staff after seeing who all would be there. ?♀️
- There have been 3,200 orders of protection in Davidson County this year, but 132 — including two against men later accused of murder — were not served because the subjects could not be found, according to a WSMV investigation.
- Fox 17 is the latest news outlet to float the idea of closing Broadway to vehicular traffic, though it faces the same opposition from business owners fearing that it would cut into the amount of foot traffic their stores and restaurants get.
- Nashville SC won its first-ever playoff game at home Saturday night, beating the Charleston Battery 3-1 to advance. Nashville will face the Indy Eleven in the conference semifinals next Sunday on the road.
- The Tennessee Titans (4-4) held on to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-5) Sunday at home to reach the halfway point of the regular season. The Titans travel to face the Carolina Panthers (4-3) next Sunday.
- The Nashville Predators (7-3-1) blanked the Minnesota Wild (4-7-0) Thursday night at home before beating the Tampa Bay Lightning (5-3-2) 3-2 in overtime on the road Saturday (it was rough weekend for Tampa Bay sports fans). The Preds take on the Chicago Blackhawks (3-5-2) at home tomorrow night.
- New Jersey-based Bubbakoo’s Burritos will expand to Middle Tennessee, with a midtown Nashville location planned. ?
- Speaking of burritos, Oscar’s Taco Shop on Church Street is listed among the best in the United States according to the travel website TripAdvisor.
- East Nashville’s Edgefield Sports Bar will reopen as Lakeside Lounge in the coming weeks, according to job postings. The former bar had been a community fixture for 25 years before closing earlier this year.
- Two more local restaurants, Baja Sexto and Peg Leg Porker, will be coming to the Nashville International Airport this spring as BNA transitions into its new concession agreement that has opened the door for local businesses. ✈️
- The Martin’s Barbecue on Elliston had a fire in the pit area Saturday morning that required emergency response, but the restaurant expected to reopen soon.
- There’s a new public art installation at the Farmer’s Market: a huge basket of turnip greens hangs overhead in the market house.
