Bright & Early: Feeling Viral Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Last Friday, McGavock High School math teacher Donald Wood had a meltdown during class in which he threw some tables, screamed a lot and admitted to starting a fire in the school bathroom one time. Wood was subdued and carted off in an ambulance, but not before one enterprising student caught the whole incident on cell phone video and put it on Youtube. As of this morning, the video has almost 136,000 views and school officials are trying to find a way to “remove it from the Internet,” except that’s just not how the internet works, you see. They’re also looking into disciplining the student since he wasn’t supposed to have his cell phone out in class. You can watch it here.
- Where there’s smoke. We never thought we’d be saying this after May’s deluge, but Tennessee is experiencing a drought. As such, you should be very careful if you’re planning to burn anything outside because we’ve had a bit of a fire problem lately (like this one in West Nashville that burned for three days) with everything being dry and hot. This is actually the biggest drought we’ve had since the 2007/2008 water shortage which led Georgia to try to hack off part of our state and steal our water.
- Help fire victims. Speaking of fires, lots of you have been asking about how to assist victims of the apartment fires in the past few weeks. Read about all the ways you can help them out.
- Win and win. It was a great weekend for sports in Nashville with the Preds raking in four goals to topple the Anaheim Ducks (and win everyone free Frosties!) in their home opener, and the Titans taking down the Cowboys.
- Bits & pieces. About 82% of the folks who are eligible for flood buyouts so far have been taking them … Nashville celebrated World Zombie Day on Saturday with a charitable twist … City Paper brings us the latest on Tent City … Brace yourselves for gas prices on the rise … Cooler weather and some much-needed rain could be in the cards for us this week.

Bright & Early: TGIF Edition
Good morning, Nashville. The company who was pouring cement for the Music City Center has been suspended from the job because they’ve slashed employees’ wages by 20% and keeps writing paychecks that bounce. The contractor is working on finding another firm to take over and trying to smooth things over with the Metro Convention Center Authority.
- Convention center drama. Construction on Metro’s new West Precinct building is on hold thanks to about $900,000 in flood damages before they were even able to start renovating it. They bought the building last year with plans to give it a significant facelift, but now they’re not sure what they’re going to do with it.
- Haynesworth’s brother killed. Albert Haynesworth’s brother was killed in a motorcycle crash last night after he collided with a car on Gallatin Pike in Madison. Witnesses say he was going about 100 mph and the force of the collision caused the car to do a 180.
- Bits & pieces. It’s supposed to be 87 degrees this weekend, which is not so good for the livestock (or for our corn mazin’ plans!) … Nashville home sales have fallen 19% in the past year … The Green Hills Provence is shutting down this weekend and Sweet Cece’s is moving in … Opponents of the Murfreesboro Islamic Center filed a court injunction to stop construction … The Omni released their renderings for the proposed convention center hotel, which would be about 25 stories tall.

Happy Hour: It’s On
- The second gubernatorial debate is going down in Knoxville tonight between Mike McWherter and Bill Haslam. Our favorite write-in candidate Basil Marceaux will not be participating, but you can still watch it on News Channel 5. [WTVF]
- A mental health facility at Meharry caught on fire today, leading to the evacuation of about 40-60 folks. No one was hurt and authorities think the blaze was caused by some sort of office supply. [WKRN]
- Tonight is the Light the Night walk at LP Field to raise awareness about finding a cure for cancer. Festivities start at 7:30. [WKRN]
- Congratulations to Vanderbilt, which made Forbes’ list of most expensive colleges in the country with an annual cost of $53,660. [Tennessean]
- The leaves are turning! Here are some fun and slightly weird ways to see the foliage: [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: On The Up And Up Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We were all excited to pull out our fall sweaters this week as temperatures dipped into the 30s, but as Nashville weather is wont to do, highs will be in the mid- to upper-80s for the next few days. Because Oktoberfest just wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without some risk of a heat stroke, right?
- Ready for whatever. The Schermerhorn Symphony Center is scrambling to open their doors by New Year’s Eve, and this time they’re making sure they’re ready for the next big flood by installing ground water alarms and built-in sump pumps in the basement.
- CMApocalypse now. This summer’s volunteer-driven CMA Fest raised a combined $2.9 million for flood relief and music education, and they were finally able to turn over the check. The sum represents all 100% of the proceeds from this summer’s festival.
- Bits & pieces. The Opry Mills Forever 21 is packing up and moving to the Cool Springs Galleria … Be prepared for some new construction on Hillsboro, but thankfully not in the Green Hills section … A woman staying at a hotel in Donelson set her bed on fire and caused all the guests to be evacuated … And we’re very proud of you guys for voting the Nashville WeatherPenis as the best Facebook page in the Nashville Scene’s Best of Nashville poll.

Happy Hour: We’re Looking For You
- Hide yo kids, hide yo wife: Nashville’s seeing a significant increase in home burglaries. [WKRN]
- Vandy is expanding to Franklin after closing on a rather large chunk of land at the intersection of McEwen and Carothers. The new campus is expected to open in 2014 and contain some of the sprawling specialty practices. It’ll be about half the size of the 100 Oaks campus, but they have plans to double it eventually. [Tennessean]
- A guy decided to drive down some steps near the Criminal Justice Center on James Robertson Parkway this afternoon. So far, no explanation has been given. [WTVF]
- Coach Fisher is defending the Titans against accusations that they’re playing dirty, saying that they’re actually just “aggressive.” [WSMV]
- Mayor Dean is working up a new policy requiring “Complete Streets” which would take walkers, cyclists and mass transit into consideration when building or reconstructing our roads. [Tennessean]

- Starting next July, those extra city trash cans are going to cost you money, but at least Metro isn’t putting RFID chips in them to ensure that you’re recycling. Yet! [WSMV]
- Metro Councilman Eric Crafton and State Fair Head Honcho Buck Dozier are two of the seven finalists interviewing for the Davidson County Election Administrator job. [City Paper]
- We’re not sure how this happened, but three Tennessee neighborhoods made some website’s list of the top 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in America. Two are in Memphis and one is surprisingly in the ‘Noog. Represent? [WKRN]
- The Mayor is working with consultants to put together a long-term flood recovery plan for the next 5-15 years, and he wants our help. [WTVF]

OktoberStreetFesting: A Guide To Side-By-Side German Festivities This Weekend
It’s an old story if you’ve been in Nashville for longer than a year or two – No, Nashville’s Oktoberfest in Historic Germantown and the Germantown Street Festival are not the same festival. They were, but that’s a tale for another time. The separate-but-equal-ish festivals take place this weekend to celebrate Oktoberfest, same time, same place, same price (free). So what’s the difference? (Nothing, really.)
What does this mean for eager Nashvillian Oktoberfesters? If you want to spend the weekend enjoying polka dancers, all sorts of bad-for-you food & drink, (loud) live music and people in funny outfits, Germantown is the place to be this Saturday. And if you’re not a fan of bratwurst or beer, there’s still plenty going on for you – Antiques to browse, historic churches to tour, pooches to parade, 5ks to run, and you can probably count on there being some funnel cakes and taco trucks hanging around.
The Germantown Street Festival kicks off Saturday morning with their 8am Bier Run, followed by entertainment starting at 8:30am and running all the live long day, or until 6pm. Nashville Oktoberfest will fling open their gates (and the taps) at 9am, wrapping things up at 6pm as well.
The moral of the story? There will be plenty of beer flowing through the streets of Germantown this Saturday, but probably not as much beer as there was in Munich this past weekend. Cheers!

PS: Watch out for these road closures as you make your way toward the fun.
Friday & Saturday, October 8-9: Monroe Street, 7th Ave N to 6th Ave N; 6th & 7th Ave between Madison and Taylor

Bright & Early: All We Need Is _____ Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re running behind this morning, so here is your abbreviated Bright & Early:
- All the changes to TCAP this year seem to have created a bit of a disaster. [WZTV]
- The State Fairgrounds will keep the doors open for events like the flea market until Hickory Hollow can get things together to host them, which could be January or it could be later. [Tennessean]
- The Metro Council could be cracking down on your weeds. That’s weeds, not weed. [WKRN]
- The new developer’s plans for the Bellevue Center mall have been unveiled. [WKRN]
- A girl whose car broke down on I-65 in Franklin was attacked by the guy who stopped to help her, but fortunately lived to tell about it. [City Paper]
- Remember that new TennCare program we told you about yesterday? It only took 70 minutes to reach the call limit yesterday for folks wanting to enroll. [City Paper]
- Tonight’s temperatures are expected to get down into the mid-30s tonight. [Tennessean]
- Which may explain why it’s already snowing in Gatlinburg! What the heck. [Tennessean]
- The Titans defensive coordinator who flipped off officials at Sunday’s game is being fined $40K. [WTVF]
- “Little Lakewood” (???) will be voting for a second time on whether to dissolve their charter and join us here in Metro Nashville. Come on over, Lakewood! We don’t bite. [WZTV]
- Today is the groundbreaking ceremony for our fancy new riverfront play park. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Heart Of The Matter Edition
Good morning, Nashville. A conflict is brewing in East Nashville over a possible new homeless shelter at Gallatin and Eastland. John Stevenson, the owner of several neighboring properties, has launched a campaign to keep the shelter away. In reality, a representative from the Sophia’s Heart Foundation (yes, that’s Danny Gokey’s organization) has been checking into the property for a few different projects–only one of which is temporary housing for 10-20 homeless folks at a time–and hopes to expand the services currently provided at the site by the Mental Health Cooperative. Mostly, they hope to create a food preparation site for off-premise distribution to homeless folks all around the city. Stevenson has put up banners in the area advertising the campaign’s website and encouraging people to call the potential developer on his cell phone, expressing concern that the project would bring an influx of homeless into the neighborhood.
- A thousand words. A Titans assistant flipped off one of the officials at yesterday’s game (which we lost) and the gesture was caught on camera. The incident was kind of reminiscent of this one, and the guy will probably be fined at some point (maybe only half of what Bud Adams was fined, as it was only one finger?) Anyway, Cortland Finnegan said it was awesome. The end!
- Eats shoots and leaves. Experts are saying that thanks to our hot, dry summer, the fall leaves will probably be especially impressive this year. We’ll race you to the Smokies!
- Bits & pieces. Bedbugs might not be dangerous, but they’re awfully annoying … We suppose it’s a little late to tell you about last night’s frost advisory, but there’s another one tonight … State employees won’t be getting that one-time bonus they were promised because money is still tight … Folks who need assistance with high medical bills can start applying for TennCare’s Standard Spend Down program today … Puckett’s new downtown location is hiring 80 employees before they open on the first weekend of November.
