Happy Hour: Oops!
- So, good story: Once upon a time, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall, champion of local immigration enforcement intiative 287(g), accidentally addressed hate group Council of Conservative Citizens as a featured speaker. And by “hate group” we mean they openly oppose mixing races, non-white immigration, and homosexuality. [Tennessean]

- John Rich, ever the supplier of poignant social commentary, has penned an unfortunate follow-up to “Raisin’ McCain” about the auto bailout which made its debut in Detroit earlier this week. [WZTV]
- Kentuckians are making their way over the border to fill up their gas cans since their disastrous ice storm a few days ago. As long as we don’t have another gas crisis down here, we’re pretty okay with that. [WZTV]

Life Is Complete: Flight Of The Conchords At The Ryman

We nearly peed ourselves when we saw this tweet from @wages, exclaiming “WHOA! flight of the conchords at the ryman? what?” Sums up our thoughts exactly. A quick Google search revealed that Flight of the Conchords are indeed scheduled to hit the Ryman on April 10. It hasn’t even been added to The Ryman’s site yet, but there it is in all its shining glory on Ticketmaster.com. We may have even felt a tiny twinge of affection for Ticketmaster just now.
Presale begins this coming Monday at 10am, and then begins the long 2-month wait until the show. We’ll try not to spontaneously combust in the meantime.
UPDATE 1:49PM: We’ve found the presale password, and since we don’t want to be spoilsports, just go add Flight of the Conchords on Facebook and then view their recent updates. You’ll find it there. Enjoy!

Twestival Nashville: Save The Date (No, We’re Not Getting Married)

Nashville is having a TWESTIVAL! On February 12, 2009, over 130 cities globally will be hosting Twestivals to raise money for charity : water. Social media for social change, as Mashable puts it. If you’ve ever been to a Tweet-up, a Geek Breakfast, Barcamp or Podcamp, you’re probably familiar with the great community that many of us have found through Twitter. And we’re confident that our great community can make great things happen, which is why we’re having a Twestival.
Sounds like short notice? Well, it definitely is… We got started on this less than 12 hours ago! And that’s why we need YOUR help to make Nashville’s Twestival a success.
How you can help:
- Save the date. Commit to coming to Nashville’s Twestival on Thursday, February 12, 2009.
- Help us plan. If you have connections to venues, performers, sponsors, caterers, giveaways, etc… We need your help! If you don’t have any connections… We need your help too! All we need are a bunch of willing hands. Which brings us to…
- Join the team. If you can commit some time (it doesn’t have to be much), we’ll be having several planning meetings over the next two weeks and we’re extending the invitation to anyone who wants to help out. Email info@twestivalnashville.com with your name, email address, phone number, twitter name and any special skills, knowledge or hookups that might help out. Our first meeting is this coming Monday at 6:30pm.
- Spread the word. We know that most of you don’t have time to help us coordinate the event. But you can still help! Spread the word on your blog, your twitter, your facebook, at your school, at your church, at your workplace. Everyone can support a good cause, right?
Our specific needs right now are: VOLUNTEERS, a venue, performers, sponsors to donate prizes and food (and drinks, wink wink!), graphic design for some promo materials and a logo, printing for posters and flyers, and friends who will spread the word far and wide, beyond the crowd that we can reach by ourselves. Again, email info@twestivalnashville.com with your ideas.
More details will be forthcoming as they are locked in place. TwestivalNashville.com is the main hub for all things Twestival!

Bright & Early: Getting Creative Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Yesterday the city rolled out the plans for the Music City Center, which is that new convention center we’re getting that everyone has been fighting about for a few years. It’ll be going in on 5th and Demonbreun right behind the Sommet Center and is somehow going to incorporate “the rolling hills of Middle Tennessee,” the Ryman, the Parthenon, curves of guitars, and instrument strings into its design (yeah, don’t ask us.) Preliminary models look pretty spiffy, though, and we’re pretty excited to see it come together. The project is set to cost $595M and pay itself off in 30 years.
- Salmonella in TN. Tennessee has not been spared from the salmonella outbreak that’s been linked to the Poisonous Peanutbutter Of Death. So far, eleven cases of salmonella have been reported across the state, though none here in Davidson County. Yet.
- We need jobs. Rocking the unemployment here in Nashville? You’re not alone. Recent reports show that 50,000 people are jobless in this city.
- Bits & pieces. Albert Haynesworth is being a brat about his contract extension, because $32 million just isn’t enough … UT won’t be ditching their tuition cap after all, at least for now … Dell is closing down part of their Lebanon plant and sending 300 jobs to Nashville.

Happy Hour: Line In The Sand
- Back during the summer, rehab facility Teen Challenge sued Metro for unfairly rezoning the property they were on and forcing them to shut their doors. Now the two parties have reached a settlement and hopefully Metro won’t pull a stunt like that again. [City Paper]
- A Memphis senator filed a bill today that would effectively ban gay adoptions in the State of Tennessee. [Out & About]
- Police arrested a man who had been robbing apartments off of Edmunson Pike, which is awesome, except it still doesn’t help the folks in Salemtown. [WKRN]
- In case you’re still sitting in traffic on I-65 with your Blackberry, a semi carrying a house overturned near Old Hickory a few hours ago. Though it should be cleared by now, it sure didn’t do anything for rush hour traffic. [WKRN]

Photo Of The Day: January 29, 2009
We were pretty floored by some of the beautiful shots that came out of yesterday morning’s Great Nashville Blizzard of ’09. This shot by Lunajen caught our eye, especially, for the vibrant colors and the detail of the ice coating the berries. Check out our Flickr pool for more photos of yesterday’s storm.

Getting Neighborly: Nashville, Meet Knoxville & The ‘Noog
We like to think we’ve got Nashville covered (well, we try.) But what happens when–hypothetically!–a billion gallons of catastrophic toxic sludge spills out by Knoxville, or Georgia starts trying to bite off a chunk of Tennessee down by Chattanooga?
That’s why we’ve teamed up with our friends at Knoxify and Chattarati to help you (and us!) get to know our neighbors a little better. We’re not even totally sure what this is going to look like yet, but we can tell you we’re pretty excited. You’ll notice we’ve thrown some extra links into the sidebar and we encourage you to check these guys out as often as you can. Meanwhile, we’ll begin exploring some other ways to put our heads together and bring you the best news and views from across the state.

Bright & Early: Neighbors To The North Edition
Good morning, Nashville. As much as we’d love a snow day, we’re pretty glad we’re not part of the 500,000 folks in Tennessee and Kentucky who are stuck without power for the next few days. NES is lending a few of their workers out to Kentucky to try and get things back up and running a little more quickly, but we can imagine that it probably still sucks. So far, this week’s ice storm is being blamed for three deaths. Our hearts go out to all the folks affected.
- Whoops! Ron Littlefield, Mayor of the ‘Noog, had to call up Volkswagen and apologize for using their logo on his campaign literature without permission. By the way, the mayor is on Twitter now so head over there and give him a hearty welcome (we only wish our mayor was that cool)!
- Money would be good. If the economic stimulus plan goes through, Tennessee would be getting upwards of $1 billion. Though we’re sort of surprised that $600M of that would go to TDOT, the $350M set aside for schools seems like a good idea to us.
- Bits & pieces. A Tennessee judge denied a death row inmate’s attempt to delay his execution which is scheduled for next week … Oh, good–Duke University scientists found high levels of arsenic and radioactive radium in the sludge they’re trying to scoop up in Kingston … The Tennessee House Ethics Committee has decided to throw out the sexual harassment charges against Speaker Kent Williams brought by Rep. Susan Lynn.

Happy Hour: Hang Ten
- Titans defensive back Michael Griffin is Pro Bowl-bound after Baltimore’s Ed Reed decided last-minute not to play (as they say, karma’s a b%$#@) This brings the total up to 8 Titans players headed to Hawaii. [City Paper]
- Didn’t get enough snow and ice and wintery destruction this morning? Check out WSMV’s slideshows of viewer-submitted pictures. [WSMV]
- Layoffs? Fine. Bailouts? Sure. Forced unpaid “vacations?” Whatever. But when the USPS starts talking about cutting out our Saturday mail, we know it must be bad. [Tennessean]
- The mailmen aren’t the only ones suffering, though. Vanderbilt may have lost $1B of their $3.5B endowment. (Update: Check the comments for the full text of a special letter sent out today to students and faculty by Chancellor Zeppos. – Thanks to Justin for the tip!) [Tennessean]
- Oh, and also, the US House voted down the extension on the digital conversion that the Senate approved earlier this week. Translation: You really are going to have to get a new TV. [WKRN]
