A Tale Of Two Johns: John Rich Crashes John McCain’s Party
We were a little surprised when we strolled into the Tennessee Town Hall Meeting at the Ryman this afternoon expecting to see, well, John McCain but instead found one John we weren’t really prepared for: John Rich. As soon as he stepped onstage with his glittery guitar and trademark ’stache, we knew we were in for a long afternoon. For being the one country musician that Nashvillians love to hate, he doesn’t seem to be getting any less popular.
We’ll just try to forget that we saw him desecrate a half-dozen Johnny Cash classics and only remember the part where John McCain totally impressed us.
For more photos from this afternoon’s event, check them out over here.

First Things First: Road Closures (CMApocalypse 2008)
Well, it’s that time of year again: The time when 200,000 country music fans will be making the annual trek to Nashville for the CMA Music Festival and Fan Fair. Luckily Nashvillest has your back, and we want to give you a heads-up on how you can avoid getting yourself stuck in the worst traffic jam of your life. Although the festival doesn’t start until Thursday, the city will start closing down streets as early as tomorrow morning. We’re just not sure which streets and when. CMA sent out a press release that we can’t make much sense out of, but we’ll go ahead and repost it anyway in hopes that you’ll have better luck deciphering it than we did. We tried getting a hold of CMA for clarification, but we’re guessing they’re swamped.
On Tuesday, one lane of Fifth Avenue from Demonbreun to Broadway will be closed.
Wednesday, June 4, Fifth Avenue from Demonbreun to Broadway will close as will First Avenue from Demonbreun to Church Street.
Broadway from First and Third Avenues will also be closed Wednesday. Second Avenue will remain open but vehicles will be prohibited from turning at the Broadway and Second Avenue intersection.
Beginning in the afternoon Wednesday, June 4, there will also be temporary road closures for the CMA festivals kick-off parade and block party. At 2:00 p.m., Broadway and Demonbreun will close from Third to Seventh avenues and Third and Fourth avenues will close from Broadway to Demonbreun. These roads will re-opened at the end of the parade around 3 p.m.
All traffic returns to normal Monday, June 9.
Which roads will be closed Thursday through Sunday? Your guess is as good as ours. But now you’ll at least know how not to get yourself stuck in the parade traffic on Wednesday.

Happy Hour: Bushwhacked Edition
- John McCain’s visit didn’t go by without protest, as around 30 people (about half of whom were donning those terrifying rubber Bush masks pictured above) stood around outside yelling at the passing cars about some war or something. [WTVF]
- Last night, Metro police pulled a guy over for running a stop sign and found out he’d been shot in the back and his car was covered in bullet holes. [WSMV]
- In addition to replacing some of MTA’s buses with hybrids, Mayor Dean also wants to cut 400 vehicles from the Metro government’s fleet. [City Paper]
- Channel 2 wants to let you know that they “captured a rare, unfiltered shot of Miley Cyrus” while she was out in Columbia filming her Hannah Montana movie. Like an urban safari. This is just one of many reasons that Nashvillest loves us some Channel 2. [WKRN]

Photo Of The Day: Green
Summer is definitely upon us, and this photo by Ryan2013 makes us want to spend our days soaking in the sun at one of Nashville’s many parks. Though we’re looking at some hot and muggy weather in the coming weeks, we’re glad it keeps the green stuff looking fresh.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest†if you’re feeling lazy.

Gems From The Nashville Craigslist: Superheroes Get Lonely Too
And we’re back with what has come to be a regular feature here at Nashvillest – Gems From The Nashville Craigslist. As much as we love bringing you up to the minute happenings in town, sometimes we just have to sit back and relax. And Craigslist provides unlimited relaxing reading material. Today we bring you an unusual plea. Be sure to let us know if you actually email this guy and get his photo.
Superhero Looking To Hang Out
So, I’m a superhero living in Nashville. And as such, I lead a pretty lonely existence. I have a hard time letting people get close to me, because once my enemies find out about them, they tend to try to use them against me. It sucks, but I deal. Only I haven’t been dealing so well with the loneliness factor over the last few months. I spend a lot of time alone, after long and tiresome shifts protecting the common Nashvillian from the riff raff and ragamuffins prowling the street, I usually come back to ” The Awesome Crevice ” only to find no one to greet me, ask how my day was, how many criminals I captured, lives i saved ( today I saved 45, but really, who’s counting? ), you know, the usual superhero stuff. I get no hot meal waiting for me, instead it’s heating up a red baron pizza and while waiting for it to get done baking, checking my email with various subjects, but all with the common theme of ” save me ” . Well I’m asking for someone out there to save me. Save me from the superhero humdrum that sometimes comes from superhero jetlag. We superheroes lead pretty bland lives, that sometimes get stuck in a rut, where everyday feels the same, you’re saving the same people, facing the challenges of the same villains, dealing wioth the same inner turmoil of doing the right thing, versus the legal thing…

Bright & Early: Best Week Ever Edition

Good morning, Nashville. What a weekend, huh? Some of us took an Urban Dare on Saturday while some were out in Franklin raving about the best BBQ in the world, and it seems like we didn’t get any sleep with all that thunder and ruckus on Saturday night. A couple of us are still recovering from sweating it out at the park yesterday for Nashville Pride and the search for the elusive “Special Edition” Bush-McCain Challenge which we think stood us up again. And of course, the motherland turned 212. We don’t anticipate things slowing down either, with the CMA Music Festival turning the place upside down for the rest of the week. Luckily Nashvillest is here to get you through the week, and we’ll be doing our best to stay on top of it all so you don’t miss a thing.
- One small step. It seems like everyone’s going green these days. And well, everyone is trying to figure out how to get out of paying so much for gas. Always on the cutting edge (ha, ha, ha), Nashville MTA will be adding six hybrid buses to the fleet by the end of the year.
- Worthy effort. We were all excited about Lipscomb and Vandy both having teams in the NCAA tournament this year, but they were both eliminated this weekend. Vandy fell to the Oklahoma Sooners in an 11-10 heartbreaker, and Georgia took down Lipscomb 14-3.
- Bits & pieces. Coyote makes an impromptu appearance near Vandy … Guy robs a Trinity Lane Family Dollar with a stolen bulldozer … Gallatin man taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after standoff in girlfriend’s trailer … Sounds replace their GM.

Don’t Forget: It’s Raining McCain
Don’t forgot presidential candidate John McCain’s Town Hall Meeting today at 12:30pm. It’s at the Ryman Auditorium, and it’s open to the public. We’ll be there, trying to figure out how to liveblog without breaking any rules. Stay tuned.
Tonight: If you’ve got $25,000 in extra cash just sitting there burning holes in your pockets, McCain is also holding a Roundtable & Reception at the home of our very own Mike Curb. You can actually get in for a mere $1,000, but who wants to be the cheapskate at the “Main Reception” when $10k will gain you admission to the “Victory Dinner”? Not us. (Actually, this is one event we’re going to have to sit out. Blogging isn’t quite that lucrative.)
