- The Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team are the 2019 NCAA National Champions, defeating the University of Michigan 8-2 in the College World Series last night. The team won the CWS in 2014, making this the second title for head coach Tim Corbin. ⚾️
- News Channel 5 has found that some attendees of a rally for mayoral candidate Carol Swain were bar employees allegedly paid $200 to show up and hold signs. The candidate and downtown bar owner Steve Smith both say they had no knowledge of such payments.
- Bookkeeping company Pilot, not to be confused with the truck stops, will be bringing 450 jobs to Nashville in a move the city’s mayor says did not include the usual incentive offer.
- Speaking of companies moving to Tennessee, the war of words between Governor Bill Lee and California Governor Gavin Newsome is heating up, with the latter giving a heated response to a reporter about losing businesses to other states.
- The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF0 tornado touched down Friday night in Antioch, uprooting trees and damaging several homes. The storm pattern continued for several days. ?
- Downtown roads were also closed briefly Monday after storms damaged windows at the new Bridgestone Americas headquarters.
- WSMV says there are an increasing number of folks getting stuck in elevators in Nashville, which ranks on up there on your Nashvillest staff’s list of phobias. Stands to reason that there are more people and buildings with elevators in town, though.
- The board of directors for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (known these days as WeGo, but still MTA in our somewhat broken hearts) will vote today on a series of revised changes to the bus system, including a move that will raise the fare for a single ride from $1.70 to $2.00 instead of the original $1.85. Multiple routes are also cut or reduced in the plan because of budget woes.
- The US Supreme Court Thursday struck down a Tennessee law that imposed a two-year residency requirement for anyone wanting to operate a liquor store in the state, opening the door for larger retailers to open package stores. Analysts predict lower prices for consumers at the expense of local owner’s profits.
- There are reports of a vulture escaping a Nashville Zoo educational show Tuesday. No word on whether the bird came back.
- Internet ordained ministers are fighting back against a law set to take effect July 1 that expressly prohibits their use in the state. Under the new law, only members of recognized clergy, judges and elected officials can perform weddings.
- We learned Tuesday that there is a Miss Hooters Tennessee contest, and that one of the finalists in this new-to-us competition allegedly wrecked her ex-boyfriend’s apartment. ?
- Nissan’s sister company Mitsubishi will also be bringing about 200 jobs to the Franklin, Tennessee area south of Nashville.
- The 2019-2020 schedule has been released for the Nashville Predators, with the team playing its first regular season game October 3 at home against the Minnesota Wild. The Predators will also take on the Dallas Stars at the Cotton Bowl for the NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day.
- This is really the only Preds schedule you need, though.
- The Preds are also again trying to keep Bridgestone Arena mostly filled with fans of the home team, introducing a new policy with Ticketmaster’s resale market to restrict purchases within the television viewing area. The efforts are mocked elsewhere in the league.
