Photo Of The Day: July 31, 2009 [Feel Good Friday]
Yesterday, the Nashville Zoo celebrated the 40th birthday of Muffy, a white-cheeked Gibbon.
“She still climbs trees up to the top with [the male gibbon], and they do their duets several times a day, so she is still pretty active. She does have some problems just like an older person, like arthritis. That slows her down a little bit, but we’re really glad she’s able to move pretty well,” said zoo employee Emily Johnson. Muffy celebrated her birthday with a treat of ice filled with fruit, cheerios and raisins. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: A Sunflower A Day Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re a little bit rushed this morning, so your abbreviated Bright & Early:
- A couple of tornados touched down in Tennessee last night, but none showed up in our neck of the woods. [WSMV & WTVF]
- A new development that would’ve added a new section of condos in Green Hills has been deferred indefinitely; Green Hills drivers breathe a sigh of relief. [Tennessean]
- For the first time, Kerry Collins is officially the starting quarterback for the Titans. [Tennessean]
- The Belmont butt-grabber, a Kroger employee, was identified as an undocumented immigrant under Davidson County’s 287(g) program. [City Paper]
- Democratic state senator Reginald Tate poisoned more than 20 of the folks who ate at his BBQ restaurant in Memphis this week. [WZTV]

Happy Hour: Bringing The Crazy
- Two 14-year old boys were charged with covering a Franklin neighborhood with racist and gay-bashing grafitti and were caught because they left their own initials behind. [Tennessean]
- We hope you weren’t too attached to 106.7 FM, the local ESPN radio station, because it was swapped out for Top 40 today at 1:06pm. Also, their new website will probably send you into a seizure. [Tennessean]
- The kid who was caught breaking into the Bellevue Mall last night says that he was only trying to steal an Xbox for his little brother’s birthday. [WKRN]
- Sen. Paul Stanley, who announced his resignation yesterday after being busted for an affair with an intern, will be getting nearly $8,000 a year in pension from the state of Tennessee. Our tax dollars at work? [Tennessean]
- The Sierra Club is trying to fight back against West Virginia coal miners who have called for a boycott of Tennessee tourism by encouraging all of their supporters to visit Tennessee in droves. [WZTV]
- The guy who robbed the West Nashville Walgreens last night was wearing a bright red wig. [WSMV]
- We’re under tornado and flash flood watches until late tonight, and we’re forecasted to get almost 2 inches of rain. Be careful out there! [The Weather Channel]

Bright & Early: Insufficient Funds Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Imagine going to the bank to cash your paycheck only to find out that your employer is flat broke. Their check bounces, which means your checks bounce and bank fees quickly begin to stack up. That’s exactly what happened to more than 200 Lebanon city workers this week when the city’s bank account appeared to have insufficient funds to pay the employees. It turned out to be a glitch in the system with Bank of America, and Lebanon swears that they’re not actually broke. As a result, they’ll soon be switching to a local bank and offering direct deposit.
- Beer on Sundays? Clarksville is wrestling with the idea of selling beer on Sundays starting at 6AM just like they do every other day of the week. Some folks anticipate that it could bring the city as much as $80,000 in additional tax revenue, but the local religious community is afraid it’ll just give people more time to booze it up.
- Drug bust. Metro Police busted a pretty big marijuana grow operation in West Nashville last night, discovering 41 pot plants hanging out in someone’s backyard. They were actually responding to another unrelated call next door when they spotted the plants.
- Bits & pieces. The two Spanish language newspapers in town are suing each other … Sen. Bob Corker released a statement saying he won’t be voting in favor of Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court nomination … Steve McNair’s former agent says that he actually did have a will, he just hadn’t signed it yet … Smyrna’s mayor has stepped down for health reasons.

Get Caffeinated: Casablanca Coffee Grand Opening Today & Tomorrow

A new, heavily caffeinated face has graced the rapidly-growing Gulch. Casablanca Coffee, originally birthed way out in White House, has packed up and moved in between Cantina Laredo and Urban Flats in the Gulch’s ICON building. Casablanca serves Drew’s Brews coffee, Provence pastries, and has a light sandwich menu as well.
Casablanca soft-opened a week or two ago, but their official grand opening spans today and tomorrow. And what’s a grand opening without a great getcha-in-the-door deal? From 8am-10am and 8pm-10pm both today and tomorrow, lattes at Casablanca are just $1. We just can’t seem to resist a deal like that, so join us and show a new face some love.

Celebrate National Cheesecake Day With A Half Price Slice

It’s July 30, which means that it’s a very important holiday in the United States of America – National Cheesecake Day. In years past, The Cheesecake Factory has generously offered slices for $1.50 to dine-in guests (and the lines, of course, have been astronomical). We’re guessing that the economy has socked ‘em where it hurts, because the deal is a little less attractive this year.
Today at The Cheesecake Factory, dine-in only guests can enjoy half price slices of cheesecake to celebrate National Cheesecake Day in style. That means you could end up paying $3-4 (and don’t forget to tip your server) for your cheesecake, which is a steal in terms of Cheesecake Factory prices, but pretty average everywhere else. It’s your call. They’re also introducing a new Red Velvet cheesecake today, which just might get us out the door to stand in line for a seat.
Nashville’s only Cheesecake Factory is located in the Mall at Green Hills.

Happy Hour: Getting The Boot
- Williamson County Crime Stoppers are offering up to $1,000 for information and tips leading to the arrest of the charming folks who spray-painted anti-gay, white power, and KKK-related graffiti all over a Franklin subdivision. [Tennessean]
- Mt. Juliet chose not to opt out of the guns-in-parks bill unlike several other cities and towns in middle Tennessee. Unsurprisingly, not everyone is happy about it. [WTVF]
- If you commute on I-40E, your commute might be a little clogged today after a wreck that happened earlier this afternoon. [WTVF]
- PETA has filed a few complaints about Vanderbilt with the US Department of Agriculture, citing some mistreatment of dogs, kittens, and mice. [Pith In The Wind]
- Speaking of the USDA, they just doled out a $20,000 grant to Franklin for tree-counting. [Tennessean]

Nashville Farmer’s Market Gets Flashed
Folks who visited the Nashville Farmer’s Market on Saturday afternoon had a special surprise waiting for them: An all-out flash mob. In case you slept through the early 2000s, a flash mob is “large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.” The force behind this one was the Circle Players theater group who decided to get creative with spreading the word about their current performances of Fame, the Musical. On Saturday, several dozen dancers popped up in a flash, erupted into a lively song a dance routine, and then went about their business, leaving their accidental audience dazed, confused, and entertained. So congrats, Circle Players–you definitely got our attention! Thanks to Nate for the tip!

Bright & Early: Stretching The Truth Edition
Good morning, Nashville. More information is coming forward about the new Kingston report by the TVA’s Office of Inspector General revealing that the TVA fudged some past reports about the Kingston ash spill to make themselves look less liable. The new report says that the spill could’ve been prevented had the TVA responded to documented safety hazards–including the size and shape of the pile–while the TVA maintains that anomalies in the storage site caused the mishap. As we’ve mentioned before, this spill is the largest and most detrimental environmental disaster in US history.
- TN senator resigns. Sen. Paul Stanley, who was busted for having an affair with his 22-year old intern, announced his resignation yesterday effective August 10th. A special election will be held to determine who fills the empty seat.
- Opting out. Franklin and Hendersonville have joined the ranks of the cities and counties who have opted out of the guns-in-parks bill that the state legislature passed this year. Spring Hill is looking to vote on the issue in August.
- Bits & pieces. Metro has been granted enough stimulus funds to hire 50 new officers … TDOT is widening the highway into the Great Smoky Mountains, which should make things much easier for the tourists … A Nashville veteran fears he might have been the origin of the HIV contamination at the VA hospital.
