Happy Hour: 30,000 Pounds Of Fried Chicken

  • CMT and Tyson Foods donated 30,000 pounds of fried chicken to Second Harvest Food Bank. 30,000 POUNDS. OF FRIED CHICKEN. But with all the talk of a Tyson boycott, it’s a small wonder they can even give that stuff away. [WTVF]
  • After hearing about the road closures, we’ve gotta admit that we’re getting a little excited at the thought of Barry and John rolling through town in their giant motorcades. Meanwhile, Belmont continues to give us the blow-by-blow of their preparations. Lighting and banners, y’all! [WKRN]
  • And then Sen. Corker came along to rain on our parade. [WTVF]
  • After the debate on Tuesday, everyone’s favorite rotten neighbor Al “Charlatan” Gore will be hosting a DNC fundraiser to the tune of $2,500 per plate. Obama may or may not be there. Our money’s on “not.” [WTVF]
  • The Preds are saying that ol’ Boots owes them over $100M. [Tennessean]

When The Circus Comes To Stay, The Elephants Go Out And Play

Our friends on Facebook and Twitter have been buzzing about some sort of commotion downtown involving an elephant. And they weren’t kidding. An elephant has been roaming around downtown (with a handler, of course) and that can only mean one thing – the Al Menah Shriners are back with this year’s Shrine Circus! There are several showtimes between now and Sunday and tickets are only $10-15. If you happen to catch the elephant’s trek through town, or see little tiny clown cars cluttering the streets, be sure to send us your pictures. Because we think that seeing an elephant strolling down Broadway (and watching tourists’ reactions) is far more entertaining than sitting through the circus.

Photo Of The Day: October 2, 2008

Flickr user guitartown does a great job capturing the many sources of light in downtown Nashville with a steady hand and a 0.8 second exposure.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Belmont’s Debate ‘08 Neighborhood Impact [Road Closures]

We’ve finally unearthed a map of the road closures announced for next Tuesday’s debate and so far it looks like the damage is pretty minimal, though we’re predicting that more closures will be announced as we get closer to the debate. We’re still recommending you steer clear of the general area if you can unless 3,000 members of the media, traffic-stopping motorcades, and a ton of Secret Service are your thing. Your best bet is to find a watch party (and believe us, there are plenty)  or hole yourself up in your house for the night. For the visual learners among us, you can find the closure map here. For everyone else, courtesy of the Metro Nashville Police Department:

Security on and around the Belmont University campus will be extremely tight next Tuesday for the presidential debate.  The debate is not open to the general public, and citizens are encouraged to steer clear of the area.

A number of streets in the Belmont vicinity will be closed in order to enhance security.  The following street closures will be in effect Tuesday between 4 p.m. and 12 midnight:

  • Belmont Boulevard from Compton Avenue to 18th Avenue South;
  • Bernard Avenue from 15th Avenue South to Belmont Boulevard;
  • Acklen Avenue from 18th Avenue South to the entrance of the Fidelity Hall parking lot;
  • 15th Avenue South from Compton Avenue to Wedgewood Avenue;
  • Acklen Avenue from East Belmont Circle to 15th Avenue South will be closed from 4 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Wednesday.

In addition to the road closures, there will be intermittent traffic disruptions on a number of Nashville streets early next week as the candidates’ motorcades, with Metro police and Secret Service escort, move from place to place.

Bright & Early: We Can See Georgia From Our House Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The Vice Presidential debate is upon us (8pm CST!) and Nashvillians are excited. Last week, Nashville and Memphis both made the list of top 5 cities that viewed the first presidential debate (Nashville at 44% and Memphis at 49.5%). It looks like the viewing party options are limited this time around with the Democrats meeting at the Obama HQ and the Republicans hold down the fort on the East side, but that shouldn’t stop us from one-upping Memphis this time. And that reminds us–have you heard that Belmont’s hosting a presidential debate? Five days, ten hours, 43 minutes.

  • Roma’s Pizza shooting. A Roma’s Pizza employee was shot in the head last night after a robber entered the Green Hills store and demanded money. The shooter is still on the loose, so lock up, Green Hills.
  • No luck at all. Police also found a dead guy in Centennial Park last night who had apparently been stabbed to death sometime after midnight. And coincidentally, also after just getting out of the hospital from another attack. No one has found the perpetrator in that case, either.
  • Bits & pieces. Another possible Hollywood strike that could interrupt yet another season of The Office … Tennessee is trying to fix the bus system between rural areas and the state’s major cities … The original Declaration of Independence is stopping over at the Nashville Public Library for a few days … Vince Young is back at practice and may get to play on Sunday.
