The Weekendist: Better Late Than Never Edition
One of these days, we’ll bring you the Weekendist early enough for Friday night fun. As it stands, here we are at midnight, which technically means you could still wake up, check your RSS reader, and dash off to Murfreesboro for the 7am Tour de Cure. Or maybe not.
As usual, there’s a lot going on in Nashville this weekend (although we’re curious about why half of them are in Centennial Park on Sunday). The list includes Pride 2008, Family Reunion ‘08, Special Edition Bush-McCain Challenge, Urban Dare, Music City Cajunfest, Franklin Food & Spirits Festival, Musica de la Gente Festival, and more. Since we’ve already covered most of the events individually, this edition of the Weekendist brings you some additional suggestions to get you through the weekend. Don’t forget to dispose of your household’s hazardous waste tomorrow.
SATURDAY
- 7am, Murfreesboro Downtown Square: Tour de Cure – This event could technically go through Sunday… If you’re planning on riding the 150 mile course, that is. Choose from 20, 40, 70 or 150 mile courses to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
- 9am, Bicentennial Mall: 2nd Annual 5K VisionWalk – Word is that there will be a bouce house, clowns, face painting, DJs, and free food. Oh, and it benefits the Foundation Fighting Blindness, so that’s good too.
- 9am-2pm, Hartman Park Regional Center: Health In The Park Day – “Be a witness, stand up for fitness.” Entertainment, food, health screenings, giveaways, clinics, the whole nine yards.
- 10am-2pm: Richland Creek Cleanup
- 10am-3pm: North Nashville Community Day
- 10:30am: Young Democrats of America Minority Caucus
- 2pm & 8pm, TPAC: Jesus Christ Superstar
- 5pm, Grimey’s: My Morning Jacket “Evil Urges” Listening Party – This is a listening party only, the band will not be at Grimey’s. New My Morning Jacket + beer + free swag = good times.
- 6pm, Wildhorse Saloon: TNDP Annual Jackson Day Celebration
- 10pm & 12am, Belcourt Theatre: The Southern Classic Drag King Extravaganza – $12 at the door gets you admittance to what is bound to be a spectacular evening. No further explanation needed.
SUNDAY
- 12pm-7pm, Traveller’s Rest Plantation: Traveller’s Rest Music Festival – We’re not actually sure if this is happening or not, but feel free to investigate and report back. Traveller’s Rest doesn’t mention the event on their website, so in our minds it’s not official. You have been forewarned.
- 1pm, Father Ryan High School Theater: Know Tibet – A benefit for Tibetan refugee children, suggested donation is $20/family or $10/adult. The performance features a modern dance and audio documentary presentation, Tibetan speakers, and musical guests.
- 6pm, Rocketown: The Almost, also featuring Emery, Envy On The Coast, Army Of Me.
Just an FYI… The Jimmy Fallon performances this weekend at Zanies have been canceled “due to a scheduling conflict.” Bummer.

More Mixed Reviews By People Who Don’t Live Here
They just keep rolling in, folks. We really find it fascinating that there are so many aspects of our city to pit against the rest of the universe, but hey. It gives us something to talk about.
This week, Nashville has been ranked the 4th friendliest city, 2nd highest incarceration rate, and 6th worst for carbon emissions. Tennessee is the top most competitive state for attracting economic development. We’re #5 on the list of Best Business Cities, but #15 on the Best Places For Businesses and Careers list. We are also the 11th most tornado-prone city with a population over 100,000 in July. Whatever that means.
Nashvillest is thinking about doing some studies off our own, maybe “Highest Occupancy Rate Of Has-Been Pop Stars” to start off.

Happy Hour: Take Our Pride But Not Our Preds
- Remember the Great Preds Scare of 2007 when we thought Canada was going to run off with our hockey team? One of the new owners who bailed us out that time is now under federal investigation for something that no one is talking about. It shouldn’t affect the team or ticket holders, though. [Nashville Post]
- There’s been a lot of talk about bad theme park ideas, but this is the first we’ve heard of this one: Ole South Theme Park, had it passed, was supposed to be a “southern culture experience” with Andy Griffith and Davy Crockett-themed rides that would sit between Maury and Madison counties. We narrowly avoided it this time, but the developers are still looking for other potential sites. [WSMV]
- HGTV’s Design Star filmed part of an episode inside our very own Nolensville Feed Mill, where they bought some “country” furniture from the antique mall housed inside the building. The show is set to air on Sunday, June 8th at 8pm. [Tennessean]
- Steer clear of I-40 eastbound and westbound on Sunday around Hermitage (exit 221). NES will be shutting down lanes on both sides while they replace some electrical wiring. [Tennessean]

Jessica Simpson Perpetuates Bad Nashville Stereotypes
We know Jessica Simpson’s gone country and everything, but there’s really no reason to go around misrepresenting the rest of us to her pals back in LA. Miss Simpson was caught at LAX yesterday wearing this country-fied getup that we think is supposed to signify her assimilation into Nashville culture or something. Trouble is, no local we know would be caught dead in that hat. Nice try, Jessica.

Photo Of The Day: Scarritt-Bennett
This photo of the pipe organ at the Scarritt-Bennett Center’s Wightman Chapel comes to us courtesy of gavoweb. One of the prettiest buildings in town, it probably so has a wedding waiting list longer than your arm. There’s a good reason for it, though.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest†if you’re feeling lazy.

Take An “Urban Dare” And Hit The Streets This Saturday
Earlier this month we reported on the 3rd Annual Great Nashville Race, which took place on May 17. It seems that Amazing Race-esque scavenger hunts are all the rage this year, because Urban Dare is visiting us for the first time tomorrow. Started in 2005 by D.C. political consultant and adventure aficionado Kevin Keefe, Urban Dare has grown to include 19 cities this year. We’re pleased to be among the 19, and even though Nashvillest just found out, it seems plenty of people already knew. Over 40 teams have already signed up for Saturday’s adventure.
The rules are simple on purpose: No cars or bikes. You must use your feet or public transportation to get around, you must compete as a team of 2 (who then must stay together during the race), and you must pay the $90 entry fee. Ouch. You also must hit the streets with only a cell phone and a digital camera, better if it’s simply a camera phone. Urban Dare is “the race where smarts can beat speed.”
If you’d like to register, you can do so here, or simply show up at 11am tomorrow at the Music City Walk Of Fame. The race starts at 12pm, if you have other plans for your $90 this weekend (we plan to ceremoniously pour it into our gas tank) but would still like to watch. Take some pictures for our Flickr pool and let us know what you think.

Get Your Cook On: Hot Chicken Amateur Cooking Contest
Our friends over at the Music City Hot Chicken Festival are back this year with all things hot chicken. The fest isn’t until July 4, so we’ll save covering that for later… But if you’re that special kind of hot chicken fan, you may be able to get in on the early action. The festival is saving 6 spots for the best amateur hot chicken chefs, and there will be a cook-off. Winner takes all (and by all, we mean a trophy and a new deep fryer). If you think this is for you, hurry! There’s only five spots left – and the deadline is June 18. You can apply online, or click here to download an application and fax it to Margie at 615-242-8857.

Nashvillest Spotlight: Blood:Water Mission
Nashville-based world relief organization Blood:Water Mission is a part of what makes us so very proud to be Nashvillians. With the motto “Clean blood, clean water,” Blood:Water is “Partnering with groups and individuals to empower Africans to build healthier communities through sustainable clean blood and clean water solutions, while developing social responsibility in the U.S. through initiatives that provoke personal engagement and ownership.” We are on board with that. They always have their hands in something, and currently that something weighs in as a little cross-country bike trip.
The Ride:Well Bike Tour will be crossing the U.S. from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., and they start riding on June 9. The team of 17 includes 2 African students and author Donald Miller, of Blue Like Jazz fame. They’ll be stopping in three major cities along the way to ride a shorter trip with the locals, and yes, Nashville is one of those stops. On July 12, the riders will show up in Nashville to ride a 25-mile course through the city (don’t worry, a 12 mile course is also offered) with anyone who registers to participate.
If biking long distances isn’t your thing, we have an alternative. Try the Bags For Africa sale next weekend. Donations are needed through June 2, and the sale is from 9am-3pm on June 7. All proceeds benefit Blood:Water.

Happy Hour: These Boots Edition
- First and foremost, the most important news of the day: Jessica Simpson’s new country single is now up on the internet for your listening pleasure. The consensus here at Nashvillest is that it sounds exactly like some other song we can’t think of, but maybe you can help us figure it out. [WTVF]
- Metro police officers will be getting their Tasers back soon. The department heavily scaled back Taser use when a 21-year old Nashville man died last September after being Tasered 12 times. [City Paper]
- Those of you in LaVergne may want to watch how much tap water you drink since city officials recently sent out a notice warning residents about excessive rates of Trihalomethanes. They say it’s still safe to drink, but we’d recommend opting for the bottled variety until they get it cleared up. [WSMV]
- Two kids from Middle Tennessee were eliminated from the first round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee because they didn’t score high enough on the written portion. Nashvillest applauds them, though, because we probably couldn’t spell “polypharmacy” at age 10. [Tennessean]
