Good morning, Nashville. In a continuation of East Tennessee falling apart, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Maryville early this morning. Though no one was injured and no damages were reported, folks definitely felt it (and our favorite is the woman who assumed that her husband “had run into their house with his truck” because that was clearly the most plausible scenario.) Just yesterday, Polk County residents celebrated the re-opening of US Highway 64, which had been closed since November 10th due to a rockslide. We can’t imagine that an earthquake is going to do much to help future things like this.
- Bright ideas. Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall is busy trying to explain why in the world an alcoholic inmate who drunkenly beat up (read: nearly killed) a soldier would be sent out on work release to the nightclub Decades. The club is even located on the same block where the attack occurred.
- Equal Pay Day. A new report by the National Partnership for Women & Families says that, on average, Tennessee women are paid $9,367 less per year than Tennessee men.
- Bits & pieces. A bill that would require some DUI offenders to take breathalyzer tests in order to start their cars passed in the TN Senate yesterday … Tayst held a fundraiser yesterday to raise money to help improve access to health and nutritious foods at schools … MDHA received a chunk of new federal grant money to build more affordable housing and homeless shelters in Nashville … Nashville attorneys and producers of a History Channel documentary show about gangs are fighting over some potentially incriminating footage.
