- Four candidates qualified by the filing deadline to fill the Metro Council District 29 seat for the Antioch area vacated by former council member Karen Johnson after she won her election for Register of Deeds. Early voting in the special election begins January 23, with election day set for February 12.
- In what has become a familiar refrain, the Metro School Board and its director are involved in a war of words with accusations flying about each other’s behavior. The leadership of director Shawn Joseph stem from complaints about the hiring process and pending sexual harassment lawsuits against the district.
- A tri-concept bar in the Germantown neighborhood is closing two of the three spots, Taco Cantina and The Trolley. It is the latest in a string of high-profile closures around town.
- The city is recalling more than 100 short-term rental permits issued last year, saying they overlooked a rule that would would have prevented their approval.
- A Metro judge has bound over the case against Officer Andrew Delke to the grand jury, paving the way for a likely trial on murder charges in the death of Daniel Hambrick. The District Attorney’s office had taken the unusual step of avoiding the previously empaneled grand jury because they had participated in an active shooter simulator with metro police.
- The Nashville Fire Department says last year was a record one for EMTs administering Narcan, a drug designed to help a patient recover from a potentially fatal opioid overdose. In 2017, the department administered 920 doses, while in 2018 that number was 1,777.
- Many riders on Nashville’s transit system are dissatisfied with service and amenities according to a survey conducted of 629 people in late 2018 by a local transit advocacy group. Specifically cited was the poor frequency of buses, lack of late night hours and deficient bus stops. ?
- WKRN weirdly spends a lot of time speculating about Governor Bill Haslam’s political future in a story about Cyntoia Brown, a woman the governor granted clemency after her case received a lot of attention. Brown was convicted of murder in 2004 of a man defense lawyers say had attempted to rape her when she was 16 and trapped in child trafficking operation.
- Outdoor retailer Patagonia plans to open a store in the Gulch by the beginning of March this year. The quick launch can be attributed to the company renovating an existing warehouse building instead of building a new one (or waiting on it to be built).
- The Nashville Predators (27-15-3) picked up a 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs (27-13-2) Monday night and a 4-3 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks (16-22-8) Wednesday night, putting them at 3-0-1 on the current six-game road trip. The Predators close out the road trip with games against the Columbus Blue Jackets (24-15-3) tonight and the Carolina Hurricanes (20-17-5) Sunday.
- One of the faces back in the lineup for the Predators was Filip Forsberg, activated from several weeks on injured reserve. He picked up a goal last night in Chicago.
- Gigi’s cupcake, formerly based in Nashville before moving its headquarter operations to Texas, has filed for bankruptcy protection. There was no immediate word on how this would affect their midtown location.
- The mayor’s office announced that it was discounting the resilience office, though they did say that the work would be continued through other ways. The office was designed to develop plans for the city to recover from natural disasters and economic threats.
