- Nashville has already broken the record for most times citizens have gone to the polls in a calendar year, and there is a scenario where they could (maybe? possibly?) head back yet again if Jim Shulman wins the election for Vice Mayor next Thursday, September 6. Early voting ends this Saturday.
- Apropos of nothing, Shulman’s sister is apparently the voice of Patty Mayonnaise from Nickelodeon’s “Doug” and will be appearing at a campaign event with him this afternoon. We are as confused as you are.
- A growing number of groups and elected officials are calling on Metro Nashville Police Department chief Steve Anderson to resign and internal communications indicate the department is trying to quell the backlash. Again, the chief and the mayor’s office have said that there are no plans for him to step down.
- Metro Nashville Public School administrators are declaring victory in a recent audit fight with the school board, but investigators are not as certain about the conclusions. Of particular concern is the rapid increase in “unauthorized purchases” where the district did not follow its own rules went from $300,000 to $2.3 million.
- The Metro Council advanced the zoning measure for the MLS stadium to its third and decisive vote September 4 in a special called meeting after four hours of public hearings with more than 100 speakers representing both sides of the contentious issue. Next Tuesday’s council meeting will also have a vote to approve demolition of existing structures, a move that requires 27 of 40 votes to advance per a 2010 referendum.
- WPLN takes a look at the opponents and supporters of the stadium proposal, and why it is has elicited such impassioned pleas from both camps by likening it to a cultural divide.
- Memphis may be home of the Grizzlies, but apparently we are now home — at least temporarily — to black bears for the first time in more than 100 years. Officials are not sure if it is the same bear spotted in Clarksville a few days ago. ?
- Residents in Green Hills and Belle Meade have also spotted large bobcats with their cubs in the neighborhood, and the advice there is the same to avoid interacting with them whenever possible.
- Hillsboro Village restaurant Jackson’s Bar and Grill closed its doors for good on Tuesday, citing issues with the way the restaurant had been performing for some time. It joins several independent restaurants that have closed this year.
- While not a restaurant, familiar landmark Royal Cleaners in 12 South is also closing, though the owners did not give any hints as to their future plans.
- The city of Nashville accounted for about $6.5 billion in tourism dollars spent by domestic travelers in 2017, which is about a third of the money spent statewide. It marks the seventh consecutive year of tourism growth following the 2010 floods.
- The FBI is asking for help to catch the “Too Tall Bandit,” a suspect who has been robbing banks for nearly a decade. The 6’6 male in mid-40s is suspected in at least 10 robberies.
- The bus stop at the corner of Mufreesboro Pike and Bowwood Court on (bus route 15) made it to the not-so-elite eight of a tournament on StreetBlogsUSA for the title of Worst Bus Stop in America for 2018. It lost to a stop in New Orleans where something might actually attack you from the overgrowth.
- A World War II-era B-17 bomber will be on display at Signature Flight Support near the Nashville International Airport through today, featuring memorabilia from its time in service and the opportunity to fly in it. The plane was last in Nashville in 2010.
- The District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday that all firearms cases would be bound over to the Grand Jury and that his office will seek jail time in an effort to curb the increase in gun-related crime. Previously the cases could be resolved in General Sessions court.
- Unrelated, District Attorney Glenn Funk was pulled over and cited for speeding in a school zone yesterday morning. Oops!
- PSA: Today is expected to be a traffic nightmare downtown with the final preseason Titans game and the Live on the Green concert. You’ve been warned! ?
