- Happy Memorial Day!
- Mayor David Briley won Thursday’s election with 54 percent of the vote, avoiding a run-off that where he would have faced second-place Carol Swain, who finished with 23 percent. The turnout was among the city’s lowest, with 82,082 votes cast.
- Briley will now complete the unexpired term of former Mayor Megan Barry and leave his post as Vice Mayor, which means there is yet another (!) special election on the horizon. Several council members say they may run for Vice Mayor.
- The other election on the ballot for District 1 council member will have a runoff to fill the oft-vacated seat, with Jonathan Hall finishing with 34 percent and Judy Cummings with 27 percent. The run-off will be held June 28, with early voting running June 8-23.
- Some parents are pushing election administrators to not use school buildings as polling stations, raising concerns about security.
- The President will be in town again Tuesday for a rally at Municipal Auditorium, so you can just about bet your morning and afternoon commute are gonna suffer for it. The downtown transit hub will again be closed, with buses boarding at 6th Avenue under the Music City Center several blocks away.
- So, remember that IKEA store we were getting in 2020? Well, the Swedish furniture giant canceled a new store opening in Raleigh, North Carolina last week and there is now some doubt that the Antioch area store will open at all. The retailer has not yet officially announced any other changes to plans.
- The Nashville Scene, Nashville Post and Nfocus Magazine have new owners after one-time mayoral candidate Bill Freeman and business partner Jimmy Webb purchased the publications from SouthComm. The publications and their staffs had been in limbo since the they were put up for sale in January.
- Nashville’s low unemployment has companies offering different perks to lure workers away from their current jobs. Some of the perks listed are head-scratchers.
- Here is a collection of old photos from a former amusement park at the fairgrounds, which look straight out of a Scooby-Doo episode. Nice of them to label the haunted house as such, as if the decor didn’t give it away.
- A man released early from prison is preparing to head back there after a federal court ruled that his sentence reduction was in error and that he must complete his term.
