Happy Hour: Too Much, Too Far
- Leave it to PETA to traumatize your children by sticking Ellie The Bloody Elephant outside of a local elementary school to teach them all about circus animal abuse. [Tennessean]
- Vince Young is the official starter for 2010, hooray! [City Paper]
- Our 2009 in Middle Tennessee was “wetter than usual” but didn’t break any significant records. In that case, we’d hate to see what actual record-breaking rain looks like. [WZTV]
- So East Nashville pretty much blew up this morning. [WSMV]
- This is just your friendly reminder that Metro’s finest are doling out $50 tickets for warming up your car this time of year, because letting your car run in the morning when it’s 17 degrees is illegal. [WKRN]
- More than 1 in 6 Tennesseans is on food stamps, which is a 66% increase over the figure from two years ago. [WKRN]
- Officials are trying to figure out what to do with the six abandoned schools in the Metro Nashville Public School System whose collective land value is $1.5 million. [WSMV]

Cheekwood Returns To Roots With $0.50 Admission In January

Waaaay back in the day (it’s okay, you don’t have to admit if you remember this far back), Cheekwood charged guests a mere $0.50 admission fee. Thanks to everyone’s favorite friend (inflation), regular admission is now up to $10 per person, but with plenty of generous free days to even things out.
But before we get too nostalgic about the 60′s, we’ve got some good news to share – Cheekwood is celebrating the beginning of their 50th year in Nashville by offering $0.50 admission for the month of January (see, we told you they were generous)! So try to forget about those below-freezing temperatures long enough for a frolic through the botanical gardens, or take the warmer approach and browse through the indoor art exhibitions while trying to remember, um, greener days. Either way, a visit to Cheekwood is a great way to spice up the dreary days of January, and for fifty cents it can’t be beat.

Bright & Early: Waking Up In The Tundra Edition
Good morning, Nashville. We’re not quite sure which is more bewildering to us this morning: That white stuff falling from the sky or the 13-degree reading on the thermometer. Or maybe it’s the 200 crazies brave folks who hopped into the Percy Priest Lake on New Years Day as part of the YMCA’s annual Percy Priest Polar Bear Plunge. We’ve had quite the cold snap since Christmas, making the plunge a little more polar with temperatures dipping to 28 degrees and patches of ice floated along the shore. We can’t say we’ll be joining them next year, but we sure admire their commitment.
- Not bad at all. The Titans defeated the Seahawks 17-13 yesterday, ending the season 8-8. For starting out 0-6, we’d say it was a turnaround they can be proud of. We’re especially proud of Chris Johnson for reaching 2,000 yards and breaking all sorts of records yesterday. Hope the men of the offensive line enjoy their new cars!
- Expensive stuff. The TVA thinks there’s still a chance that insurance could help cover the cost of the Kingston ash spill cleanup. Up until now, we’ve all been footing the multibillion-dollar bill through rate increases, though we haven’t noticed much of a chance in our electric bills because of falling fuel costs. While we’re at it, check out WPLN’s feature on the one-year anniversary of the spill.
- Bits & pieces. The first little Nashvillian of 2010 was Chaison Darnell Swiams, born three minutes after midnight on January 1 … Due to some tax issues with the IRS, the Preds may be in default of their Sommet Center lease … Gunner the K-9 police dog got a protective vest for Christmas after recovering from stab wounds sustained in the field two months ago.

Start 2010 Well-Fed With Nashville Originals Restaurant Week
It’s time to take a pencil to those fresh 2010 calendars, because January 11 marks the start of Nashville’s 2010 Restaurant Week. Chapter Three of Restaurant Week in Nashville runs through January 17, and the idea is always the same - Prix fixe meals at many of our beloved Nashville Originals restaurants. At $20.09 or $30.09 meal price points, it goes without saying that Restaurant Week is a foodie’s delight. It’s also a great opportunity for the more hesitant diner to test the waters in unfamiliar territory, and for your Nashvillest editors to play dress-up and pretend like we actually have money to blow on fancy food. But our favorite part about Restaurant Week is that there’s no waking up at 6am to fight for discount gift certificates!
Some of the fine-print details are still forthcoming, but we’ll continue updating this post when the information is released, so stay tuned. While you’re waiting, check out 2009′s Restaurant Week details here, just to get an idea of what you’re in for.
Past Restaurant Weeks have introduced us to Tayst and Yellow Porch. Have you made new discoveries during Restaurant Week? Let us know in the comments!
