Happy Hour: Don’t Drink The Mayo
- Bought any mayo from Kroger recently? Yeah, you might want to return that. [Nashville Business Journal]
- And also, if your kids go to school in Cheatham County, sending them to school with a gas mask probably wouldn’t hurt. [WTVF]
- Look at our city being all famous and stuff! Tonight’s soccer match at LP Field will be airing on ESPN2 and something called Galavision, which we can only guess is not a channel we get. [WKRN]
- Some stores are being really cool about customers getting laid off from their jobs by offering steep discounts, free services, and help with payments if you’ve recently been canned. [WKRN]
- For the love of all things holy, please call the cops if you see someone wandering around (or poking around the internet) with the $50,000 worth of bikes stolen from the Gran Fondo bike shop in Belle Meade. They’d like them back. [WSMV]
- The tornaders are comin’ for us. [The Weather Channel]

Nashvillest Guide To Tin Pan South 2009

Tin Pan South, the NSAI’s 17th Annual Songwriters Festival, is back in town this week. It started last night, but because we’re such slackers, we’re writing about it today. It’s sort of unfortunate that we’re such slackers, because there was a great round of shows last night… But enough crying over spilt milk, because there’s plenty left to look forward to. So what is Tin Pan South?
Tin Pan South is America’s largest festival dedicated to songs and songwriters, and it’s one of those things that we love because it’s so uniquely Nashville. From yesterday (March 31) through Saturday (April 4), over 100 shows will take place at pretty much every venue in Nashville, with each show usually featuring 3-5 songwriters. Do the math. Many of the names you’ll see on the full Tin Pan South schedule may be unfamiliar at first glance, but a bit of poring through the detailed bios and you’ll realize that dozens of these songwriters are kind of a big deal.
We realize that the schedule can be a bit overwhelming, so we’ve picked out a few shows that we think you should take note of. Tickets are available for each show (passes have sold out) at the door and are usually between $7-20 (but most shows seem to be in the $8-12 range). Also, check out The Nashville Feed’s daily picks if you want a second opinion.

Expedia Takes Batman Building To Mars [April Fools]

Let us make one thing clear – We are simply reporting on someone else’s April Fools joke, not taking part in any tomfoolery of our own. Now that we have that out of the way, we’d like to take you to examine Expedia’s April Fools joke, flights & hotels to Mars. Look around closely. Does anything look familiar to you? Check out Hotel Package #4, the Utopia Spa & Resort from $53,086.00. Is it looking more familiar now? Yes folks, that is the AT&T tower in downtown Nashville, aka the Batman building, also apparently doubling up as the Utopia Spa & Resort on Mars! We never knew! And it sounds like a great place to stay, too:
Revel in the idyllic setting of the Utopia Spa & Resort. Find peace of mind millions of miles from home with spa treatments unique to Mars, including the Martian heated rock massage and Martian-mud red facial. Tours of the nearby space shipyard are available via appointment only.

Bright & Early: We Kind Of Hate April Fools Day Edition
Good morning, Nashville! Because we know that the internet is a virtual minefield of obnoxiousness on April Fools Day, we aim to provide a safe haven for you by not actually fooling you at all. That means no rickrolling, no flipping your page upside down (we’re looking at you, Youtube) no making up the news, no ridiculous ha-ha-just-kidding new features (Gmail)–just some straight-up Nashvillest lovin’. And anyway, it’s shaping up to be gorgeous outside today and that sounds like the perfect opportunity to unplug for a bit and enjoy the weather before it gets gross and stormy tomorrow.
- Mo’ money mo’ problems. If anyone could use a stimulus, it’s Metro Nashville Public Schools. Trouble is, they’ve got a proven track record of mismanaging federal funds so their stimulus money is frozen until they can prove that they won’t screw it up.
- We wish we were fooling. A couple of TVA officials field-tripped to DC yesterday to explain to Congress how their multiple toxic sludge spills have actually done a service to the community by highlighting the need for new regulations. Funny!
- Bits & pieces. 1.7 million (about a third of us) Tennesseans haven’t had health insurance or have lost their health insurance in the past two years … Governor Phil will be announcing a new initiative to get our infant mortality rates down since we have one of the highest in the nation … The Easter bunny delivered 144,000 eggs to Second Harvest Food Bank yesterday, donated from some company in Kentucky … A bill that would require all driver’s license tests to be administered in English is one step closer to passing the state Senate.

Tomorrow: Tim Gunn Makes It Work In Green Hills

Tim Gunn. Green Hills’ Kate Spade store tomorrow. Go! If you haven’t already run shrieking to stand in line, chances are that you’re not familiar with Mr. Gunn. We have two words for you – Project Runway. Gunn is the Knower Of All Things Fashion (some refer to him as “consultant” or “guru,” but we prefer our terminology) on the wildly popular Bravo show, Project Runway. He also has a laundry list of other fashionable credentials, including but not limited to his own television show, a book and a fancy-shmancy job at Liz Claiborne Inc.
Honestly, we had no idea that good ol’ Gunn had such a dedicated following, but after speaking to more than our fair share of ecstatic Project Runway fans in the past week, we have officially rescinded our skepticism. Sorry! Tim will be speaking about spring style from 5pm-7pm, and unlike a certain other celebrity’s appearance next week, this is free and open to the public, which is good enough to get us on board. View the invitation here for RSVP info and additionaldetails. Carry on. Thanks to Jamie W. for the tip, and Jennifer for the additional info!
