This Weekend: The Most Unfortunately Named “Urban Adventure” Race Ever

Reality television has really sunk its claws into everyday life, as evidenced by the not one, not two, but three “urban adventure” races that have come to town in the past four months, all touting themselves as some sort of live-action Amazing Race. It’s all fine and dandy, but wow. The Nashville Oyster Urban Adventure Race will be happening this weekend, and there’s so many ins and outs that we’re not sure where to start. There’s the 3-person team deal, which will be male, female or coed by division. Then there’s the 6-person team deal, which will also be separated in divisions by gender. On top of all that, there’s a Family Fun division which has a bunch of clauses that we’re too lazy to list out. But for those left unconvinced by its less than savory name, the Nashville Oyster makes a hell of a lot of hypey claims. Highlights include:

The Ultimate Urban Adventure Race for its uncanny ability to provide pure athleticism with thought-provoking strategy.

and…

If you are bored with your race, try an Oyster! …Your team will run-bike-scoot-paddle-trek-climb and perform other crazy athletic stuff you never dreamt could make a race so darn fun.

and…

Q: What’s the “ball busting part” and “do you have the pearls” part?
A: The course is designed to challenge every person who enters the race. Everyone who trains properly should be able to complete the course, but the ultimate test will be who finishes in the top echelon. Don’t be misled, this race will not be a walk in the park. It will challenge every aspect of your endurance, mind and body. It will beat you up and drain you, but once you cross the finish line, the accomplishment will be well-worth the trials! And, once you cross the finish line the true meaning of the name “Oyster” will be realized.

So now that you’re sold on being a part of the Nashville Oyster Urban Adventure Race, just fork over a couple hundred bucks (and get pledges for several hundred more), spend a few hours deciphering which division you belong in, register online, and show up at 6am Saturday morning (let us repeat: 6am Saturday morning) for a long day of running-biking-scooting-paddling-trekking-climbing. Full details and registration can be found here, and you have until 11:59pm Friday night to register.

Happy Hour: A Little Room To Breathe

  • Vanderbilt’s homecoming is sounding just a little bit cooler with the announcement that Lil Wayne will be the main act this year. We’re not entirely sure how this tops Kanye’s performance last year as the article seems to imply, but who are we to judge? [Tennessean]
  • Channel 4 brings us the bizarre tale of a father and son, both named Richard Lowe, who both got into a big fight with a third man in West Tennessee wherein the elder Richard Lowe went after the younger Richard Lowe’s friend with a steel prosthetic arm. [WSMV]
  • The four suspects thought to be involved in the murder of a Vandy professor Pierre Colas and his sister were in court today. [WKRN]
  • Among a lot of other changes being made in Metro schools this year, security will be much tighter at athletic events due to some past incidents. [WTVF]

How We Can Help: Second Harvest Food Bank

Wondering how you can help the hundreds of displaced victims of Hurricane Gustav? Second Harvest Food Bank has issued a cry for help, as they put together both meals for Red Cross shelters locally and truckloads of meals to ship to the affected areas. They need financial donations as well as food donations. You can donate online, or follow their instructions for bringing in food:

Food donations should be brought to Second Harvest’s Martin Distribution Center at 331 Great Circle Road in Metro Center.  Items can also be placed in collection bins at area Kroger stores, where shoppers can purchase the Food Bank’s most needed items or grocery bags pre-filled with needed items. To make a financial or food donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, call 615.329.3491 or visit www.secondharvestmidtn.org.  If mailing a check or money order, please indicate “Disaster Relief” in the memo section.

Photo Of The Day: September 3, 2008

Regular contributor jlynn3187 takes a look at one of Nashville’s creepier critters, the cicada, which we heard about earlier in the summer after a whole swarm of them emerged from beneath a Nashville park after 17 years of hibernating underground.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Nashvillest Guide To Getting Into Movies For Free

That’s right, we said for free. We’ve debated bringing you this info because we’re selfish, and spreading the word about free movies means less for us. But we feel like you have the right to know.

Nashville is one of a handful of test markets for major theatrical releases. There’s almost always a screening of any new movie somewhere in town, but the trick is finding them. Sometimes we’ll be fortunate enough to stumble across someone from Lightning 100 handing out screening passes, or a free-for-the-taking stack hanging out at a bookstore or coffee shop. Aside from these rare strokes of luck, getting into movies for free takes a little digging.

Our first (and main) stop is Shakefire. Shakefire does regional screenings, and we happen to be within their region. Sign up for a free account there, submit a request for the screenings you want, and you’re in. You just have to remember to go back and check weekly as they announce new screenings, because the better movies are always over-requested. Participation on their message boards is encouraged (to give feedback on the movies you screen), and they reward active members with preferential screening opportunities. Shakefire will mail your screening pass (good for two people) about a week before the screening. If you don’t get one, it means you didn’t get in. Easy enough.

The next stop to make is Wild About Movies. Some of their screening passes are printable, others require you to submit a request and wait to see if they open a screening in the Nashville area. We have less luck with Wild About Movies, but they usually screen great movies, so it can’t hurt to have a lot of Nashville people sending in requests.

Just to cover your bases, sign up with the major film companies. Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Disney and more. They may or may not send you screening offers, and they may or may not fill your email up with spam. We’ve had luck with a handful of screenings from Columbia Pictures.

Happy screenings, and save some room for us.

Bright & Early: The Blame Game Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We’ve been hearing plenty of talk about the state takeover of Metro schools, which supposedly happened because many of the district’s schools couldn’t meet the tough No Child Left Behind standards. New reports are showing that there may be more to the story–Metro may have actually been denied the state funding they would have needed to get their scores up. But the state disagrees, saying that they’ve awarded millions of dollars to the district in the past that have gone unused. We anticipate some drama.

  • Represent! John Rich, our favorite local celebrity/upstart and mastermind behind “Raisin’ McCain,” will be taking the stage tonight at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota. And not only will he be entertaining the crowd, but he’ll be doing so in rhinestone Wranglers.
  • The price of art. TDOT has been fighting an uphill battle to keep our road signs and overpasses graffiti-free. Officials estimate it costs upwards of $1000 to remove graffiti from a single sign, adding up to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year devoted to the cleanup.
  • Bits & pieces. Hurricane evacuees will be hanging around town for a few more days, and area shelters will be staying open for as long as they need to … Nothing to do with Nashville, but awesome enough to pass long: A cat napping on a spare tire underneath a truck found itself on a 75-mile road trip and survived … Thinking about buying a home? Nashville’s housing market is one of the most stable in the country … Yazoo is one step closer to claiming their new spot after the zoning passed its second reading last night … Vanderbilt Medical Center goes completely smoke-free.
