Happy Hour: All Snowed In Edition

  • The TVA’s free online energy audits and energy-saving kit giveaways seem to be working, as the numbers more than doubled during the month of June. They’ll be especially useful for making sure your house stays warm with all that snow we’re going get tonight. [Tennessean]
  • The Most Dramatic School Rezoning Plan Ever gets more dramatic by the day. Our favorite former superintendent Pedro chimed in yesterday, calling a few members of the school board out for being a bunch of racists. Now the NAACP is offering a helping hand to Metro and trying to come up with their own plan that we’re hoping will be a little less segregation-y. [City Paper]
  • We’ve been long-time fans of the Copper Kettle in our neck of the woods, so we’re happy to deliver the news that they’re opening another one downtown. [Tennessean]
  • Titans coach Jeff Fisher is throwing a big benefit for the Second Harvest Food Bank, whose mobile food pantry has had to severely scale back in the last few months. Tickets are $500 and there are only 50 slots, so if you’ve got an extra chunk of cash lying around, this is a great way to blow it. [Tennessean]

Bundle Up: Tennessean Predicts Snowfall Tonight

It’s time to venture out into those sub-zero temperatures and move your broken down cars off the interstate, folks. Metro police will be clearing the roads to prepare for tonight’s snowfall.

Thanks to Nashville Is Talking for the tip!

Photo Of The Day: July 8, 2008

This piano looks like it’s seen better days, but some things just look better with age. Captured by vili5 at an abandoned house in Bellevue, the image is part of a pretty impressive set that you can check out over here.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Frist Freebies: It’s A Good Time To Be A Kid

The Frist Center is one of Nashville’s gems. Scattered between fine art exhibits, they offer many free community and family events. And the big one – Children under 18 are free, all the time. We heard that they did away with their Thursday night college program, which offered free admission to college students with ID – But it’s back! Membership prices are reasonably priced – $25 for college students and teacher, $35 for seniors, $45 for individuals, $60 for a couple, and $65 for families.

Free Family Days: August 17, November 9
Frist Center Kids Club: Every Saturday from 1pm-2:30pm. Free art classes and special rewards for kids 5-10.
Music In The Lobby: Free local music in the lobby on Thursdays and Fridays from 6pm-8pm. Now through September 12.

Bright & Early: High Hopes Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It’s been quite the summer for drug busts around here. Yesterday in Lebanon, Wilson County Sheriff’s detectives seized 800 pounds of pot that had been smuggled in from Mexico. After digging around and staking out across the street, they actually saw the guys unloading the huge marijuana bales from a tractor before swooping in to make the bust. Impressive, but it’s got nothing on the 357,500 baby marijuana plants uncovered in East Tennessee last month.

  • Get well soon! The 12-year old girl who was shot in the head last week in LaVergne is still in the hospital, but she’s recovering like a champ. Her attacker, and 11-year old boy, is being charged with attempted second-degree murder after finding the gun in his parents’ room and taking it outside to show some friends.
  • Your tax dollars at work. If you’re a regular user of the Centennial Sportsplex, you may want to find another gym to get you through the summer. Strapped for cash (like everyone else these days), they’ve cut their hours considerably–they’re now opening at 6am instead of 5:30, and the pool will only be open 45 hours per week instead of the usual 72.
  • Bits & pieces. Watch out for the email lotto scam … Metro wants your tips about fraud, and they’re letting you remain anonymous … Volkswagon expected to decide where to put the new plant by July 15th. Best of luck to the ‘noog! … Metro Councilman John Griffith thinks he has the answer to homelessness … Stranded Fireworks Express passengers can now get their refunds by mail.

Ride:Well This Saturday with Blood:Water

We’ve talked about Blood:Water Mission and their Ride:Well tour before, but now they’re almost here. Literally. The team of riders that are biking across the United States will arrive here this weekend for the local chapter of the Ride:Well tour on Saturday. The Nashville ride is 25 miles, but there will be a 12 mile version for those out-of-shape bikers among us, and will start downtown at Rocketown (6th & Shirley) at 9am.

Registration for Saturday’s ride starts at a $50 donation, but different levels of registration are available with different incentives. Register now online, or on-site at 8am the day of the ride.

If you’re lazy and bike-less like us, come out to support Blood:Water at their follow-up fundraising concert Sunday evening at 3rd & Lindsley. Sixpence None The Richer and Matthew Perryman Jones will be playing (don’t forget to get Matthew Perryman Jones’ album on Noisetrade) and all proceeds benefit Blood:Water Mission.
