Bravo Wants To Make You A Supermodel

Bravo is making a 2nd season of Make Me A Supermodel (we know, shocker). Naturally, they’re casting in Nashville. We had a couple Nashvillians on the show last season, which is really the only reason we knew it existed. Gather your portfolios and get ready, because they’re coming here on the 6th (just one week away).

Bravo is looking for gorgeous, interesting men and women to compete on season 2 of Make Me a Supermodel, the reality competition that explores what it takes to turn the exceptionally good-looking into a professional working supermodel. Do you have the unique look, the passion, and the personality it takes to compete?

If you think you fit the bill, fill out an application and show up at Opryland next Wednesday at 10am. Email SupermodelNashville@gmail.com for additional information.

Happy Hour: Terrestrial Matters

  • Your Thursday laugh, especially for the speed demons among us: Channel 2 snagged this video of a Tennessee Highway Patrolman doling out a speeding ticket to another cop. [WKRN]
  • The Health Department is saying that the 10th Tennessean is being treated for salmonella poisoning, and they’re blaming it all on tomatoes Texas jalepenos Mexico now. [WSMV]
  • President Bush (wait, is he still around?) signed a bill today that may help as many as 30,000 Tennesseans cope with the housing crisis by creating some tax breaks, grants, and incentives for homeowners and buyers. [Tennessean]
  • A recycling plant out in LaVergne had a bit of a scare today when two employees were taken to the hospital with signs of exposure to some sort of hazardous material. [WSMV]
  • More West Nile mosquitoes were trapped in Antioch, but no one has been infected yet. [WSMV]

Photo Of The Day: July 31, 2008

One of our favorite places in Nashville has always been Dragon Park (actually called Fannie May Dees Park), since we discovered it hidden in the shadows of the neighboring Parthenon. Beautiful mosaics aside, Dragon Park sure isn’t short on hiding places like this one–a PVC tunnel beneath a rocky pyramid of sorts, captured by nashgirl.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

We Make Lists While We’re Not Working [Mixed Reviews]

Happy over-the-hump-day. Tennessee’s unemployment rate has bumped up to 6.5% in the past month, landing us the title of the state with the 7th highest unemployment rate. If you’ll remember, we’re also 9th worst for unemployment benefits, so things aren’t looking so hot on the employment front. We also have the 13th highest foreclosure rate (which isn’t really surprising since none of us have jobs).

The good news is for businesses – Tennessee has the 4th most favorable business climate of all states, thanks to all those people running around looking for jobs!

And hey, we have one of the nation’s top 60 zoos. That’s gotta count for something.

Bright & Early: Tut Tut, Looks Like Rain Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We sure weren’t expecting the monsoon yesterday, but hey–we’ll take what we can get this summer. Yesterday’s storms knocked out power for more than 3,000 of you, dumped over 2 inches of rain in some parts of the city, caused a ton of car wrecks, and they’re not over yet. NashvilleWX is calling for strong storms throughout the day with lots of wind and maybe even some hail. Duck and cover!

  • More TVA drama. Things continue to go downhill for the Tennessee Valley Authority, who are now dealing with an oil leak that happened yesterday at a southeast Nashville substation. They’re saying that it’s not dangerous, but some homes may lose power while they work on fixing it.
  • Volunteers needed. If you’re a masochist with a lot of free time, the Davidson County Election Commission (yeah, the same group that forgot to lock up our social security numbers) is looking for volunteer poll workers for next week’s primaries.
  • Bits & pieces. A 7-year old who set his house on fire after an argument with his parents is being charged with a felony … Metro Police have arrested three men responsible for the theft of $25K worth of diamonds a few months back … Dave Ramsey thinks the unemployed should just get a jobMore salmonella found on a Mexican farm … We can all breathe again–Scrabulous is back under a different name.

Happy Hour: It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

  • We think it’s a little excessive that the Opryland Hotel started stringing Christmas lights today, but who wouldn’t get excited with all those exclamation points? If only it were actually snowing. [WTVF]
  • Also excessive was this afternoon’s big ribbon cutting ceremony for the new security check-point at the Nashville International Airport, attended by Mayor Dean. [WKRN]
  • While we’re talking about cutting ribbons and such, the newest addition to Nashville Metro Public Schools, Cane Ridge High School in Antioch, had its opening ceremony today. No word on whether the mayor made it to that one. [WSMV]
  • Members of Tennessee Equality Project, a GLBT advocacy group, are calling for the Knoxville church shooter to be prosecuted for hate crimes. [via Post Politics]
  • Despite the tight state budget, Gov. Bredesen has announced the addition of dental benefits for CoverKids recipients. [WSMV]
  • Nissan is looking to avoid layoffs by offering buyouts to about 6,000 employees at the two Tennessee plants in hopes that at least 1,200 will take them up on the offer. [WTVF]

The show will feature special guests Toby Keith and Montgomery Gentry. So what are you waiting for? Get to TPAC by 5:30pm and git-r-done.

Tomorrow: Nashville Geek Breakfast At Fido

What? No Noshville this month? It’s true… Noshville will be closed for kitchen renovations, so the monthly Nashville Geek Breakfast is relocating. Join them tomorrow at Fido instead, around 7:30am. Who’s in?

Bright & Early: How They Really Feel Edition

Good morning, Nashville. If you were hoping to take a cab this morning, you’re probably out of luck. After the 100-person taxi strike yesterday, the other 400+ Nashville cab drivers are planning to follow suit this morning. Instead, you’ll find them rallying outside Mayor Dean’s office downtown at the courthouse in hopes of meeting with the mayor to air out their issues with Nashville cab companies–namely the $175 flat fee they have to pay each week to pick up passengers. Though this part of the strike is only lasting through the day, it could continue if their demands aren’t met.

  • Outsourcing the blame. A new study by the Economic Policy Institute has employed a new tactic for explaining Tennessee’s awful job market: Just blame it on China. They’re saying that close to 55K jobs have been cut in Tennessee as a result of China bringing some product manufacturing in-house instead of importing from the U.S. to cut costs. Sounds good to us.
  • New Mayor’s forum. Last night marked the beginning of Community Matters, a new initiative by Mayor Dean to directly address concerns by residents of the East Nashville neighborhood. In the next few months, neighbors are encouraged to meet with the mayor regularly about concerns ranging from potholes to neighborhood safety. In two months, the program will move on to another area of the city.
  • Bits & pieces. Over 4,000 glass pipes and two handguns were confiscated after Metro Police discovered a downtown liquor store selling “drug kits” on Lafayette St. … Nashville Rescue Mission and members of Downtown Presbyterian are patrolling the streets with cases of bottled water to help homeless folks beat the heat … Not directly tied to Nashville, but that Facebook app we all know and love, Scrabulous, is probably not coming back because Hasbro sucks … An audit found that thousands of dollars have been stolen from the Williamson County government.
