Happy Hour: Unpleasant In Mount Pleasant

  • A Mount Pleasant sewage pipe broke and spewed 1.4 million pounds gallons of raw sewage across a road, which took almost 8 hours to clean up. Just… ew. [Tennessean]
  • Nashville taxi drivers aren’t happy about limousine and sedan services taking away their business. Metro has finally responded by drafting an ordinance to regulate the services, but the Metro Nashville Taxi Drivers Association is still skeptical. Maybe they’ll go on strike and our streets will be a few cars lighter. [City Paper]
  • CarMax made a $15,000 donation to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital that will provide bedside computers for the kids to keep in touch with their families while they’re all holed up in the hospital. [Tennessean]
  • Since the value of the dollar is dropping like it’s hot, Tennessee tourism officials say that Europeans will be flocking to Nashville because they love them some country music. Who knew? [WSMV]

Photo Of The Day: Sky Iris

Sometimes we have to show some love to the tourists in this section, especially when their photos are as creative as this one from Ignatius244. In case you don’t recognize it, this ominous-looking eye in the sky is the dome from inside the Opryland Hotel. We also like his Escher-ish version of the same photo, found over here.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Nashville Does It Better: American Idol

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re well aware that last night was the much anticipated wrap-up of American Idol’s 7th season. David Cook came out way ahead, and most of the world rejoiced. In the past, Nashville has had great representation on the show, producing the likes of Kimberly Locke, Mandisa, and Melinda Doolittle. And if they didn’t live here before the show, many of the winners have since set up camp in Nashville after getting record deals or simply out of some masochistic desire to join the ranks of up-and-coming musicians wearing out the karaoke circuit around town.

We’re happy to tell you that we can claim a piece of this season’s pie, too. Even though Cook’s performance of the song “Time of My Life” had us swooning last night, we had no idea it was written by one of our own, Nashville native Regie Hamm. The story is pretty heartwarming: Hamm’s wife works at Starbucks while he stays home to take care of their daughter Isabella who has something called Angelman Syndrome (a disorder that causes severe developmental delays), and it’s been a rough couple of years for them. Anyway, last night’s Idol was the big break he needed to jump start his songwriting career. So thanks, Regie, for giving us something else to brag about.

Bright & Early: Rough Morning All Around Edition

Good morning, Nashville. It’s with incredibly heavy hearts this morning that we report that Christian music star Steven Curtis Chapman lost his youngest child, Maria, yesterday after she was struck by a car driven by Chapman’s teenage son in the family’s driveway in Williamson County. Maria, 5, was one of three girls that the Chapman family had adopted from China.

  • It’s about time. Fort Campbell will become the first Army post to add a Traumatic Brain Injury Center intended to combat PTSD, depression, and suicide among young veterans. Nine Fort Campbell soldiers committed suicide last year.
  • T9 disaster. A new study shows that Tennessee is the second-worst state in the country for texting while driving, with South Carolina taking home the last-place ribbon. Who, us?
  • Bits & Pieces. Murfreesboro will install 3 new red-light cameras in addition to the 3 they already have and start ticketing violators $50 … A car caught on fire yesterday in the parking garage below the Nashville Public Library’s downtown branch … Vandy defeats the Gators 7-3 in the first round of the SEC tournament … A Tennessee farmer is switching out his tractor for mules due to rising gas prices.
