Nashvillest Field Trip: East Nashville Farmer’s Market
Nashvillest took a field trip today to the grand opening of the East Nashville Farmer’s Market. Maybe we were expecting a bit more excitement, but it seemed a little on the small side. The masses of hula-hooping children were the entertainment for the afternoon, with a collection of tents and vendors in a small circle next to the Turnip Truck. Produce is limited this early in the season, so it was mostly greens, asparagus, and strawberries. One thing we noticed is that the East Nashville Farmer’s Market will be selling local dairy and meat, something that sets it apart from other similar community markets. Prices were average, a pint of strawberries about $5 and a pound of asparagus about $6. We plan on returning during the summer to see what different crops turn up.
All in all, the East Nashville Farmer’s Market is a great community gathering spot, but will only be able to supplement your weekly produce needs.

Happy Hour: Halfway There
- The state flag has been flying upside down at Legislative Plaza for at least two days straight. We highly recommend WSMV’s video segment about it, because it’s really dramatic. [WSMV]
- It’s been a while since we heard from Pedro (Garcia, former head of Metro Schools), who’s how teaching at his alma mater USC. And how did he break the silence? “I don’t want to talk to anyone right now, especially the Scene.” [Pith In The Wind]
- One wrong click of the mouse and 9 million Tennesseans could be without power. New study shows that the TVA is vulnerable to cyber attacks. [Tennessean]
- Metro has already planned their sobriety checkpoints for Memorial Day. Be careful out there this weekend. [Sylvan Park]

MSNBC’s Today Show: No Love For Clarksville
MSNBC’s Today Show published a list of the 100 best places to raise a family in the United States. Nashville is conspicuously absent from the list, which was based on educational spending per pupil, teacher-to-student ratio, museums and parks, pediatricians, divorce rate, crime rate, air quality, commuting times, and the housing market. It doesn’t hurt our feelings too much because two of our high schools were just ranked in the top 25 public schools in America.
We did notice that our Clarksville neighbors were ranked as the #1 worst place to raise a family due to their low educational spending of $6,729 per pupil (compared to Metro Nashville’s $7,617). They’re understandably upset, and their Director of Schools is now calling the piece “lazy.” The Tennessean reports that Mayor Carolyn Bowers is worried the article might make the town less attractive for potential museum and business owners.

Photo Of The Day: Parthenon Or Rat Maze?
We can almost bet that every person who’s ever visited or lived in Nashville has taken a picture of the Parthenon, and until we saw this picture by ronbox, we were pretty sure that we’d seen every perspective there was. It took us a minute to even figure out what we were looking at with this one, and for that, you can color us impressed.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest†if you’re feeling lazy.

Signature Tower An Epic Fail: Maybe Next Year, Georgia
When we first heard about the Signature Tower a few years ago, we weren’t sure what to think. We knew it would drastically change the skyline that we’ve all come to know and love, and we didn’t think it looked great to begin with. Standing at 1,030 feet and 70 stories, it would be nearly double the height of our beloved batman building (630 feet and 30 stories, ears and all) and divide the skyline down the middle.
But when we heard it would top Atlanta’s Bank of America plaza by 7 feet, becoming the tallest building in the country outside of New York and Chicago, we started to warm up to it. Ever since we started hearing talk of Georgia wanting to move the border and annex a chunk of our state, we’ve been all about minimizing their architectural feats.
Last we heard, it was set to break ground last year.
Then we started seeing headlines a few weeks ago about the developers putting the plans on hold and refocusing their attention on a development project in West Nashville, saying that a lack of revenue is to blame. As of this morning, WTVF was calling it “the building that would have changed Nashville’s skyline” and reporting that the number of condos in the tower is being scaled back from 400 to 125.
We’re a little disappointed, but we haven’t given up hope since none of the renderings on the Signature Tower’s official website have changed. Nashvillest will keep you posted as we hear more in the coming weeks.

Bright & Early: Rocky Road Edition
Good morning, Nashville. If you’ve tried calling 911 in the past couple of months, you may be familiar with their hold music (we can actually tell you with certainty that they have none.) Or maybe you were the one who called them up and gave a panicked rundown of your emergency and received that “I don’t give a s—” response that we’ve all read about so much and seen on the news. Either way, Metro is finally doing something about it. The dispatch center, which was under an interim director, has now been taken over by a Metro Police lieutenant who promises to fix it for us. We sure hope so.
- The buck stops here. Starting today, Tennessee state lawmakers are working for free. Turns out they only have 90 days to wrap up their work before their paychecks are cut off. We have a hard time believing there’s only 90 days of work to be done down there, but we’ll be happy to have our downtown parking back when they all leave.
- Fireworkpocalypse 2008. What’s a Fourth of July celebration without fireworks? We may find out this year if the overseas Powers That Be don’t get their acts together. They’re behind schedule, and Tennessee fireworks distributors are worried about getting stocked up in time for the holiday.
- LED drama continues. Metro City Council decided last night to form a Sign Task Force, whatever that means, which will decide if we’re going to have to look at those huge LED church signs for the rest of our lives.
- Bits & pieces. Coyote shot and killed in Hermitage neighborhood … Vandy drops $60M on revamping athletic facilities … Mt. Juliet city employee steals $10K from city … Mixed martial arts competitions likely to be legalized in TN soon.

PETA Brings Vegetarians To The Streets Of Nashville

This week is World Vegetarian Week, and at least half of your Nashvillest team is really excited. Unfortunately, it seems that the only thing going on by way of celebration is that Johnny Rockets & PETA are offering a free veggie burger with lots of strings attached. PETA must have realized that the gesture was a little on the stingy side, because some meat-packed, naked humans appeared in the streets downtown yesterday to add a little oomph to our week. Happy World Vegetarian Week to you too, PETA.
If you’d like to hold your own observation of World Vegetarian Week, Nashvillest recommends checking out PM’s new spring menu with a wide variety of vegan/vegetarian selections that differ from the everyday fare.
