Happy Hour: We’d Rather Be Outside

  • The Nashville Metro area was found by the American Heart Association to be the least heart-healthy “mega metro city” for women in the US. Are we seriously “mega?” [WTVF]
  • We figured the bus fare hike wouldn’t go by unnoticed: African-American advocacy group Power to the People filed a civil rights complaint against Nashville MTA, citing racial and socioeconomic discrimination. [City Paper]
  • A Memphis pastor handed out $30,000 to his congregation yesterday and told them to use it for random acts of kindness. [Tennessean]
  • Several major hotel groups are vying for the space attached to the new convention center. That means we could even get our very own Peabody ducks, which would bring us one step closer to being cooler than Memphis. [City Paper]

Gems From The Nashville Craigslist: Money Can’t Buy Love

There’s nothing better than a good, aimless browsing of the Nashville Craigslist. It’s something about knowing that these people are living in our fair city, that we could have been standing with them in the checkout line at Target last week, that makes it so endlessly entertaining. Safe to say, this one wasn’t standing in line at Target with us…

Do You Need a Good Looking RICH Guy??????????? – 30 (Nashville)

I am so rich. Goodness, gracious. My, my, my. I am so, very, very wealthy. How many dollars do I have? That’s a question only my team of ten fat accountants can answer, because they have golden calculators which I bought for them with my money. And what is on those golden calculators? Numbers. And those numbers equal the dollars in my bank accounts, which are huge.

I have many vehicles which I use to travel across the world and to many exotic destinations where most people cannot go, because they are so poor. They have very little in dollars, but I, myself, I have very many dollars. Also, I am sexy for a man. I like to think that if I was a woman, I would be a playboy model. But since I am a man I am like the opposite of all that, the man version.

In my vehicles I have stored many bottles of rare, delicious wines. These wines are hundreds of years old and covered in dust and cobwebs, which means that they are the most delicious kind, and that they were grown from grapes which were so succulent and juicy that the poor grape-pickers of France wanted to eat them right then and there. But they were whipped, by my shift-leader vintner, who makes sure that the best grapes in my vineyard go only into the wine. That’s right, my great grandfather, who was also rich, owned the vineyard where this wine was made. And it’s really strong too, it can get you wasted quickly.

Cupcake Showdown: Gigi’s Cupcakes vs. Dulce Desserts

[Ed. Note: A big thanks to Marion Millard, who was so kind as to write our first real Nashvillest food review this week! We look forward to having the excuse to try all the incredible local food, drink and dessert selections - But for now, reading about it is the next best thing.]

Music Row workers have a couple of options for a quick pick-me-up dessert. There’s Dulce Desserts in Edgehill Village, or the trendy new Gigi’s Cupcakes off 21st. Decisions, decisions.

Dulce Desserts was up first. They aren’t really in JUST the cupcake business, but their creations are so delectable that you wouldn’t even suspect that they aren’t their main source of revenue. Walking into their tiny store next to a Pilates studio (the irony) you’re overwhelmed by the gorgeous gigantic cakes sitting on the counter that you almost don’t notice the array of cupcakes in the case underneath. My coworker and I stare at the menu board, attempting to make a decision. Unfortunately, Dulce was sold out of most of their gourmet cupcakes, so we were forced into settling for the $2.00 red velvet cupcakes– smaller in size but equally as beautiful to look at.

Photo Of The Day: The Mondrian Wall

One of our favorite parts about digging through the Nashvillest Flickr pool every day are all the pictures that make us go, “Wait, that’s Nashville?” Maybe we just don’t get out enough, but we’ve never seen this wall before and completely fell in love with this contribution from hereontheroad.

You guys have been dropping such incredible photos into our pool that we’re having some serious trouble deciding which ones to put up every day. So if you don’t see yours up here right away, relax, we’ll catch up with you. It’s a problem we’re really happy to have.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

House Parties and Hill Drama

Our favorite blogging member of the Tennessee House, Rep. Stacey Campfield, set the internet rumor mill on fire last week when he posted about an alleged reception for Tennessee lawmakers at Deja Vu Showgirls strip club downtown. The story is that the Tennessee Cabaret Association’s lobbyist Tracy O’Neill (who also lobbies within the Metro Nashville government) was handing out invitations for the party at Legislative Plaza, which sported the tagline “Party Like a Rockstar, Rock it Like a Pornstar” and promised lots of nude girls, free drinks, and $10 lap dances. After leaving invitations with “friends and colleagues” including a couple of legislators, she insisted that the Cabaret Association has nothing to do with the event and it isn’t a legislative reception, which would be a violation of Tennessee law. We’re sort of not buying it.

Rep. Campfield got wind of the get-together and announced on his blog that he wasn’t invited. Kleinheider has the rest of the story at the Nashville Post, and conveniently snagged a scan of the actual invite. Anyway, the controversial bash happened Friday night, and we’re still waiting to hear who showed up.

Bright & Early: He Walks The Line Edition

Good morning, Nashville. If you weren’t in Las Vegas last night for the ACM Awards like the luckier half of the city, chances are you might have been watching them on TV. Either way, Nashvillest sends out a big “congrats” to all of the winners, and especially to 2008 Entertainer of the Year Kenny Chesney. We saw so many familiar faces during the show last night, and our Nashvillian hearts were glowing with pride the whole time.

  • Yes, we know. It’s election year. From the department of shameless publicity stunts comes former State Democratic Party Chairman Bob Tuke’s 15-mile walk through Nashville yesterday. If you were out at Centennial Park enjoying the nice weather, you may have run into him campaigning for Sen. Lamar Alexander’s seat in the U.S. Senate. We’re already experiencing campaign-overload.
  • Happy Safe Boating Week. A yacht in West Nashville caught on fire over the weekend and sank at the Rock Harbor Marina. No one was on the boat at the time, but the owner had been cleaning it the night before because he planned on selling it for a half-million dollars. And it was the first day of Safe Boating Week. Ouch! We loved Channel 5′s take on the situation, which pointed out that “[y]ou wouldn’t hand the car keys to untrained 16 year old but some boaters have just as little preparation.”
  • More headlines that make us go “huh?” Pillow accused of impersonating fireman. Greg Pillow, that is. Channel 5 clearly got a kick out of it, and that’s why we love them.
  • Bits & Pieces. Urban garden trend hits Nashville … Titans want new HD monitors for LP Field … Check your $100 bills. They might be fake! … West Nashville church caught in the middle of a gunfight after Sunday service … Big round of applause for the Sounds, who swept New Orleans yesterday. Sadly, they’re still in last place.
