Happy Hour: Throw Your Hands Up

Happy Friday, Nashville. It’s been a great first week here at Nashvillest, we thank you guys so much for reading, and we hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend. Come back to see us next week!

  • 15,000 lbs. of crawfish invade Nashville this weekend for the second annual Crawfish Boil at Riverfront Park. We’d suggest you steer clear of the general area unless you plan on going. [WKRN]
  • Tomorrow night at Centennial Park, there will be a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of this week’s earthquake in China. If you’re interested, meet at the band shelter at 7pm. [WTVF]
  • Check out News Channel 2’s piece about the Rutherford Co. Bible Park meeting. We love that they stayed until the meeting finished at 1am to bring us our news. [WKRN]
  • Bus fares could be in for yet another hike of 25 cents come July so they don’t have to raise prices for their van service for the elderly and disabled. We can get on board with that, but then again, we don’t ride the bus. [Tennessean]
  • Rodney Atkins managed to rack up six nominations for this year’s ACM awards in Las Vegas. Way to play it, Rodney! [Tennessean]

The Ren Fest Isn’t Over ‘Till The Pirates Invade

We weren’t sure if we should cover the Tennessee Renaissance Festival this year, since Nashvillest launched in the second to last week of this year’s events. Our friends at Twitter were disappointed that we didn’t cover this weekend, and to be honest, we were disappointed too. Because Family Weekend and Romance Weekend are fine & dandy, but this weekend just happens to be Pirate Invasion Weekend. If Nashvillest were going to the TN Ren Fest, it would definitely be for this. What makes it even better is that the pirates invading the Ren Fest tomorrow will be playing Robin Hood, bringing a bounty of canned goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank. So dig out your eye patches, parrots, and canned peas and get suited up for the trip to Murfreesboro tomorrow or Sunday. Next week is the last week of the Ren Fest (sniff, sniff) so if you’re planning on checking it out, we recommend that you do it soon.

Tickets are $18 for one day or $32 for a weekend pass. Hours are 10am-6pm, rain or shine.

Photo Of The Day: Nash Bridges

We’re suckers for a good black & white shot, so Berlyjen’s nighttime capture of the pedestrian bridge downtown caught our eye for the lines and symmetry. She has a color version here, and we can’t even really tell you which one we like better.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Nashvillest Exclusive: Inside the Obama Fundraiser

[Ed. Note: Well, we were dying to know what went down at last night's fundraising dinner hosted by Michelle Obama that launched us into the national media spotlight yesterday. A very big thanks to our (anonymous) undercover Nashvillest operative who gives us a special peek. That said, the following views do not necessarily reflect those of Nashvillest.]

With a guest list chock full of the rich and famous, a performance by Emmy-Lou Harris and a $1,000 minimum donation required for entry, a visit from Michelle Obama is apparently something worth celebrating.

Thursday, March 15th Mrs.Obama appeared at a fundraiser for her husband, Senator and presidential hopeful Barack Obama right here in Nashville, TN. A small crowd of roughly 100 people, including 2 undecided superdelegates, arrived at a private West Nashville residence to greet Mrs. Obama in support of her husband’s campaign and to hear her remarks.

Bright & Early: Let’s Talk About Bible Park Edition

Good morning, Nashville. This edition goes out to our Rutherford Co. readers who have our deepest sympathies because they might end up with some sort of tacky Bible theme park in their neighborhood. From what we hear, most people seem to think it’s a bad idea including Nashville Is Talking, whose colorful exposé last week caught our attention. The planning commission met last night to vote on it and as of press time, we’re not sure what went down. WTVF and the Tennessean both packed up and left the meeting around 10:30pm, which is why we have nothing to report. Maybe someone can fill us in this morning.

  • We’re not in Kansas anymore. Channel 4 looked at 50 years’ worth of data and determined that our very own Davidson Co. is the most tornado-ridden county in all of Middle Tennessee, with Sumner and Rutherford coming in at a close second. Duck and cover, y’all.
  • Speaking of tornadoes. Union University is finally rebuilding its dorms after a tornado tore through the campus back in February. Students have been leaving messages on the concrete floor before the carpet is laid over it to remember the destruction. 51 students wound up in the hospital after the Feb. 5th twister, but none were seriously injured.
  • Bits & Pieces. Nashville mom sends care packages to Chinese kids who lost parents in the this week’s earthquake … If you ate at Jonathan’s Grille on Nolensville last weekend, you may want to check your credit card statements … Spring Hill’s property tax might be making a comeback … Hats off to the Sounds, who actually won last night.

Update: WTVF is saying that Rutherford Co. shot down Bible Park 12-9, so we can all breathe a sigh of relief. Apparently the developers can reapply, but they’d have to wait a few months.
