Shooo this weekend was a lot, Nashville. Let’s recap:
- The “I Will Breathe” rally, a peaceful march & rally against the police brutality and white supremacy was held mid-afternoon with city leaders in attendance. Later events took a violent turn with many downtown businesses damaged, some looted, and the Metro courthouse set on fire.
- A photo of a shirtless white male with identifiable tattoos (“Wild Child,” really?) lighting a fire at the Metro Courthouse circulated widely on social media and less than 24 hours later, Wesley Somers was taken into custody. “Wild Child” no more.
- Police are still on the lookout for the more violent agitators who participated in the events of Saturday night.
- When the dust and tear gas settled over 30 businesses were damaged from the unrest and 28 people were in custody.
- Political protest dust-ups weren’t limited to Nashville. Murfreesboro saw action as well.
In non-riot news:
- The Country Music Hall of Fame laid off almost half its staff, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect tourism in our city and nationwide.
- COVID-19 cases topped 23K across the state of Tennessee.
- Youth unemployment is a concern in Nashville due to widespread unemployment due to COVID-19
