• An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fired on a box truck in South Nashville while attempting to apprehend a man the agency suspected of being in the country illegally. The FBI is investigating the circumstances around the shooting.
• Ryman Hospitality has lost its court case against the Metro Historic Zoning Commission that would have allowed them to continue to bathe the “Ole Red” bar on Lower Broadway in red. The company is likely to appeal.
• The run-off between Ginny Welsch and Tony Tenpenny in District 16 has taken a weird turn, with a mailer from “concerned voters” equating Welsch to Mayor Briley and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and saying that it would be a vote for “progressive socialism.” The mailer urges recipients to vote for John Cooper and Tenpenny.
• Mayor David Briley is trying to broker a deal between Metro General Hospital and Meharry Medical College before a contract runs out at the end of this week. Metro General is the primary care for Nashville’s indigent population.
• A new high school in Bellevue may be delayed, a move that has prompted the community’s elected officials to endorse the mayor’s opponent, John Cooper.
• Food personality Paula Deen plans to open her namesake Nashville restaurant at Opry Mills Mall, several years removed from a controversy where admitted racist comments costs her television and sponsorship deals.
• The Community Oversight Board is running into difficulty obtaining police records in their investigations of alleged officer misconduct, with the department denying all requests.
• A chaotic scene unfolded on Lower Broadway when police attempted to stop a man that was allegedly waving a pistol at pedestrians, leading to a series of car crashes and an injured officer who fired at the suspect.
• A restaurant billing itself as a “classic French bistro” will be opening in East Nashville this fall. ??
• A WSMV report says that ankle bracelets worn by some people awaiting trial are no longer being monitored because of a dispute over payments between the monitoring company and the trial courts.
• The Tennessee Titans (1-0) routed the Cleveland Browns (0-1) 43-13 to open the regular season. The Titans host the Luck-less Indianapolis Colts (0-1) on Sunday.
• The Nashville Predators open their preseason a week from today at 3:30 p.m. Monday, September 15 at home against the Florida Panthers. To borrow an old theme, “summer sucks, drop the puck.” ?
