- Metro Nashville Police Department officer John Anderson was killed early Thursday morning near Nissan Stadium when his patrol car was struck by a 17 year-old driver evading arrest. The driver and her passenger were taken to the hospital, while Anderson died at the scene.
- The Metro Council stopped short last Tuesday of an outright banning dockless scooters from the city, but did affirm new operating guidelines and reduced fleets intended to improve safety. The proposal would have removed them from the city while soliciting proposals from up to three operators to return.
- A separate bill to reduce the number of investor-owned short-term rental properties was postponed until next week.
- Metro Nashville Public Schools teachers will receive a three percent raise in August followed by a new three percent raise in January under a new plan introduced by the mayor’s office. The six percent raise is still below the 10 percent requested.
- A woman with a lengthy criminal record allegedly called 911 seven times in under an hour to make homophobic statements and sexual slurs to dispatchers. She was eventually taken into custody.
- Presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke was in town for a rally Sunday night and is visiting Second Harvest today.
- A 22 year-old Arizona man died from his injuries after falling from a downtown rooftop Thursday. Bar staff say that he was running away from bouncers.
- The National Museum of African American Music received a $5.1 million in grants from Vanderbilt, Belmont and others to launch in its new downtown space at the Fifth + Broadway development.
- A Metro Nashville Police officer has been decommissioned and assigned to desk duty after a video surfaced Wednesday of him throwing the driver of a car pulled over for expired tags against another vehicle at a gas station. The department and Community Oversight Board are investigating.
- The City of Ridgetop near the Davidson County line will have only one police officer (the chief of police) after the remaining officers were laid off because of a budget battle with the city council. A judge had ordered the city not to interfere with the operation of the department.
- After trading away PK Subban before free agency, the Nashville Predators signed their long-coveted forward Matt Duchene to a 7 year, $56 million contract on July 1. For his part, Duchene had been telegraphing his interest in the city for years with real estate investments, country music, cowboy hats and weekend trips.
- The team literally put out the Welcome Matt for him, and even McDonald’s got in on the action.
- The US Men’s National Team won its Concacaf Gold Cup semi-final match 3-1 against Jamaica Thursday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville after lengthy weather delays. The team would drop the final Sunday night 1-0 against Mexico.
- A new color mural along Nolensville Road on the side of an international market pays homage to the city’s large Kurdish population.
