- James Shaw, Jr., the man credited for saving numerous lives at the Waffle House shooting in Antioch, is considering running for mayor of Nashville next summer. Shaw says his platform would focus on gun laws and bringing the city back together.
- Tomorrow’s election will bring an unusual spotlight to Tennessee as the state has one of the most expensive U.S. Senate races in the country playing out between former Governor Phil Bredesen and US Representative Marsha Blackburn. The state is also preparing to keep its technology infrastructure up under heavy web traffic.
- The Nashville Scene has a recap of everything you need to know ahead of tomorrow’s election if you have not yet voted, or you’re like us and just nervously checking every story about them until they are over. - The Scene also has a story about the city’s service worker shortage where it looks at some of the root causes and organizations that are working to reverse the trend.
- A voting analytics firm surveyed the early voting rolls and noted that Tennessee saw an increase of nearly 700 (!) percent in voters between the ages of 18-29. The younger demographic is still about a fifth the size of the 65+ group, however.
- The weather is expected to be rough tonight, so be careful out there. ?
- The Tennessean takes a look at the Church Street Park, a frequent gathering place for the city’s homeless population because of its close proximity to the downtown library, and plans for its future replacement with a high rise in a controversial land-swap deal. The parks board voted 3-3 Friday to not advance an endorsement of the plan to the council.
- The Catholic Diocese of Nashville published the names of 13 former priests who have been accused of sexual abuse of a minor, coming in the wake of a Pensylvannia grand jury report that outlined such accusations in six dioceses across that state. Of the 13, nine are deceased and two are in prison, with the remaining no longer active with the church.
- WPLN has an in-depth story about how the Martha O’Brien Center will be opening a new school in the James A. Cayce Homes public housing project, but its complicated recent history with the community it serves has lead to a degree of distrust.
- JJ’s Market in Midtown will close at the end of the month, about a year after Vanderbilt University bought the property earlier this year when a lease dispute prevented the developer from knocking down the property until at least 2022. This particular closing bummed out your Nashvillest staff.
- A sixteen year-old woman was shot in the stomach early Sunday morning outside of Prince’s Hot Chicken in North Nashville. No word on her condition or whether police have identified any suspects.
- There is a new “Modern Japanese” restaurant called The Green Pheasant in
the GulchSoBro if you want to check it out. - The Nashville Predators (11-3-0) picked up two big wins against Eastern Conference teams, starting with a 4-1 road win over Tampa Bay Lightning (9-3-1) Thursday and 1-0 at home against the Boston Bruins (7-4-2) Saturday. The Predators begin their annual CMA road trip tomorrow night in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche (7-4-3).
- Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne not only got the shutout on his birthday, he also picked up a two-year $10 million contract extension that will keep him between the pipes in Nashville through 2021.
- The Tennessee Titans (3-4) reportedly tried to move RB Derrick Henry at the trade deadline last week, but were unable to find a match. The team is in Dallas to play the Cowboys (3-4) tonight on Monday Night Football after a long bye-week.
- A recent sting operation in two of Nashville parks lead to the arrest of three men on charges of indecent exposure and possession of drug paraphernalia. ?
- Nashville police have arrested a man that they say had more than 445 lbs. of marijuana between his home and a storage pod from California that was aimed to be sold in the Nashville area.
- The city has broken ground on new facilities at Fairgrounds Nashville for exhibit space in spite of pending lawsuits seeking to block the construction. Work is expected to begin next year on the MLS soccer stadium at the site.
- The Boy Scouts of America decision last year to allow girls to join has not slowed the growth of Nashville area Girl Scout chapters the organization said. The two organization’s regional leaders meet every six to eight weeks to discuss common interests.
