- Mid-state first responders are on their way to the Carolinas as Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall as early as Friday. More than 103 members of swift water rescue teams are part of the contingent.
- Vanderbilt University Athletics Director David Williams is stepping down after more than a decade in the role to return to the law school as a professor. The university picked up four national championships during his tenure — two in bowling, one in baseball and another in women’s tennis.
- Nashville has a backlog of about 481 unsolved murders, with 16 added this year alone. The unsolved cases are those where no arrests have been made in connection with the crime.
- In a wide-ranging speech to a local civic group, Mayor David Briley said that he wants the city to return to the “fundamentals” of education, public safety and shared prosperity. He spoke days after the Metro Council approved the $175 million MLS stadium deal.
- A Waffle House will be coming to Charlotte Avenue near midtown according property records and a source with knowledge of the company’s plans. The 24-hour diner is popular with the post-bar crowd.
- Trail cameras in the counties surrounding Nashville continue to capture video of mountain lions and other large cats. This comes as bear was spotted in the county late last month. ?
- The National Hockey League has suspended Nashville Predators forward Austin Watson for all of the preseason and about a third of the regular season without pay stemming from a domestic assault charge in June. The union representing Watson has said it will appeal the suspension.
- Police have arrested a 17-year old male in connection to a rape and burglary of a pregnant Antioch woman where she escaped by leaping from a third story window to get away from her attacker. The woman sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition.
- Campus police at Tennessee State University are investigating what they are calling a “prank” social media post about an active shooter Tuesday. They had not yet identified the source of the false statement.
- Car dealership owner Lee Beaman has resigned from the boards of Belmont University and Montgomery Bell Academy following accusations levied in a divorce filing by his fourth wife of emotional abuse and the use of prostitutes. Through his lawyers, he said the matter was a “family dispute.” ?
- The Tennessean takes a look at the compensation for the CEOs of the Nashville Convention & Visitor Corporation and Music City Center and you might have already guessed they are paid a lot. Both positions are funded by tax dollars collected in the downtown area.
- The Metropolitan Transit Authority is aiming to revamp Dickerson Pike in East Nashville if they are successful in landing a matching $2.3 million federal grant. Previous attempts on West End with the AMP and Gallatin Pike with light rail have failed to gain support.
