- Sixty years ago today, more than 100 protesters were arrested as part of the Nashville’s sit-ins for attempting to eat at whites-only lunch counters, a pivotal moment in the civil rights era of the United States. The group refused to pay bail or any of the fines for breaking the racist laws on the books at the time.
- North Nashville residents told Metro Council members at a listening session that they expect to see drastic improvements to city services if a property tax increase happens. The sessions are set before the mayor releases his proposed budget to the council.
- The Metro Nashville Police Department offered a chance for city officials, residents and reporters to get a look at their long-delayed body camera pilot program with demonstrations of the recorders and support equipment. The cameras will be deployed on traffic and DUI patrols before expanding to other precincts in May.
- Metro Nashville Public Schools has a plan to address the 160 unfilled teaching positions and 271 support staff vacancies, hoping they can improve the communication and culture of their teaching staff while continuing to address the inadequate pay. ?
- MNPS’s School Board has narrowed down the finalists for a permanent director of schools, including the interim Dr. Adrienne Battle.
- Nashville climbed five spots to second on a list of hottest job markets in the country behind Austin, Texas according to the Wall Street Journal. ?
- In a familiar refrain, homeowners are raising concerns that Nashville’s infrastructure, such as roadways and storm drains, are not keeping up with growth.
- A state lawmaker wants to change the “drug-free zone” laws that adds mandatory minimum sentences to drug possession charges near schools and churches, citing that they disproportionately impact minority communities in dense urban areas.
- The Nashville Predators () won their second straight game at home, this one coming as a 2-3 decision against the Ottawa Senators (). The team is in action tonight against the Calgary Flames () and Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche () with both games at Bridgestone Arena.
- Monday’s NHL Trade deadline came and went, with only defenseman Matt Irwin in the “went” category (to Anaheim in exchange for another D-man, Korbinian Holzer and a sixth-round draft pick in 2022). Most analysts aren’t scoring it as a great deadline day for the Preds, but it’s been that kind of season.
- Forward Allie LaCombe signed a contract with the pro women’s hockey team Connecticut Whale while continuing to coach a program in Franklin, Tennessee. She has appeared in three games with the Whale, posting one assist, a .765 face-off percentage and a +1 rating.
- Nashville SC will open their inaugural MLS season tomorrow at home against Atlanta United and in front of an estimated 50,000 fans. ⚽️
- Most of the focus in Tuesday’s primaries has been on the presidential race, but the Nashville Scene has a look at the contested down ballot races for County Trustee and a judicial seat.
- We aren’t sure if karaoke and burlesque was what East Nashville needed, but the owners of Sid Gold’s Request Room did not ask us. The venue is set for an April opening on Gallatin Ave. ?
- The Fifth + Broadway development retail and restaurants won’t open until later this fall, but more names are being added to its roster including Blanco Cocina and Cantina, one of two concepts from the same restaurant group on the property. The residential apartments could open later this spring.
