• Belmont University will host one of the 2020 Presidential Debates the school announced Friday, reprising a role they had in the 2008 elections. ?
• Mayor John Cooper announced Thursday a tentative plan that the Music City Center will pay $12.6 million to the city in lieu of property taxes each year as part of his effort to divert money earned downtown towards fixing the city’s budget woes. There is still a sizable hole to fill in the current budget year.
• ICE agents sought to obtain student records from Una Elementary School in southeast Nashville, a request that was denied and prompted the system to remind schools to seek assistance if law enforcement requests came to their attention. Immigration activists called the request “outrageous and deeply troubling.”
• Reporter Nancy Amons of WSMV asked some tough questions of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on his visit to Nashville, centering around the unfolding scandal involving the Ukraine. He was not a fan.
• A group of Kurdish immigrants protested in front of the downtown Federal Court House Friday to show their displeasure in the government’s sudden military withdrawal from the border area between Turkey and Syria, leaving their homeland vulnerable to an assault from Turkey.
• A few of them boarded a party bus to continue the demonstration, adding to a very short list of acceptable reasons to ride on a party bus. ?
• A 56 year-old man was killed by a WeGo bus Thursday morning when witnesses say he stumbled on the sidewalk as the bus passed. The incident happened on 8th Ave South.
• Belle-Ewe made her first public appearance after being lost for weeks in Warner Parks, showing up at a local history festival as the special guest.
• The L&L Market on Charlotte Avenue had its grand opening this past weekend, welcoming visitors to its dozens of stores already open.
• Nashville SC has secured its first ever home playoff game with a 2-0 win over North Carolina FC. The team goes into the final weekend looking to lock up top seeding in their conference. ⚽️
• Also opening this past weekend was the Ford Ice Center in Bellevue, adding two more sheets of ice surface to the city where it has been at a premium with the growing popularity of the Predators and an increased interest in figure skating.
• WSMV reports that 33 cyclist have been injured in 2019, about one a week, highlighting the dangers faced when riding on the city’s streets and the lack of infrastructure. It is only a $50 fine to block a bike lane, and it is seldom enforced.
• Spirit Airlines began its inaugural flights out of Nashville International Airport Thursday, adding a handful of destinations not already served by other carriers, with others expected in November.
• Miss Belle Meade Justice Enlow has been crowned Miss Tennessee, edging out Miss Davidson County Rayni Lasley. Related, we learned today that either of those pageants exist. ?
• The Titans (2-4) dropped a 0-16 loss to the Denver Broncos (2-4) in a game that saw quarterback Marcus Mariota benched in the second half without much offense to speak of before or after that. The Titans host the San Diego Los Angeles Chargers (2-4) next Sunday in Nashville.
• It’s also been a rough few weeks for the Titans even at home, with fewer local fans filling the seats.
• The Nashville Predators (3-2-0) won a thrilling 6-5 game Thursday night against the Washington Capitals (3-1-2) at home but had a comeback come up short against the Los Angeles Kings (2-2-0) Saturday night, losing 7-4 for the season’s first road game. The Predators continue their road trip against the Vegas Golden Knights (3-2-0) Tuesday night.
• New Predators forward Matt Duchene may have country singing aspirations after hockey is done. ?
• A woman in southeast Nashville was injured while trying to stop a loose dog from attacking her own while walking in the neighborhood. MACC says there have been 585 animal bites reported this year.
• The Trader Joe’s in the White Bridge shopping center is expected to open this week, giving Nashville at least one less reason to drive through Green Hills traffic.
• And finally, a woman appearing in a viral video twerking on top of a car through the Antioch area has been arrested, police say.
