- The roof deck of Acme Feed and Seed, a popular bar on Lower Broadway, suffered a partial roof collapse that closed the four-story venue for half of Saturday, all of Sunday and likely a good portion of today. The venue originally expected to keep the first and second floors open, but the fire department halted operations.
- In addition to the various races on the ballot this November, there will also be six Metro Charter amendments for voters to consider. Early voting begins this Wednesday.
- Amendment 1 will not have the support of Nashville’s mayor, saying he opposes the specific language used in the referendum to create a community oversight board for the police department.
- Speaking of early voting, there will be a free concert featuring Sheryl Crow, Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell starting at 10 a.m. this Saturday at Ascend Ampitheater before marching to the Howard School Building to cast ballots. ?
- A Nashville pastor was unwittingly a potential victim of voter fraud when someone allegedly collected his name and address for a petition, and then attempted to register him to vote with a fake social security number. He has been a registered voter in Davidson County for more than 40 years.
- The Pharmacy in East Nashville has had a rough few weeks, with a shootout outside that left one man dead and now with an attempted burglary of the restaurant itself. The precinct commander says that violent crime is actually down in the area over last year.
- A restorative justice program aimed at at-risk youth is coming to Nashville, becoming the first of its kind in Tennessee. The program helps first-time offenders make amends with victims.
- Colleen Conway Welch, the longtime head of the Vanderbilt School of Nursing and instrumental in raising the national profile of the program, has died. She was 74.
- A Nashville Scene food columnist says that all the recent restaurant closings are not entirely bad news for the city’s dining scene. He suggests we may have to go out into the suburbs to get the good stuff.
- If you ever wanted to tour Nashville’s water treatment plants, now would be a great time to get on that. Metro Water is offering for dates for walking tours.
- The Nashville Predators (4-1-0) exacted a small dose of revenge against the Winnipeg Jets (2-2-0) Thursday night with a 3-0 shutout in Nashville followed up by a 5-2 win over the New York Islanders (2-2-0) Saturday. They close out their home-stand against the Minnesota Wild (1-1-2) tonight at Bridgestone Arena.
- The “Regular Season Western Conference Champions” banner hanging at Bridgestone Arena has caused quite the controversy, but at least the mascot has his own (very tiny) banner in the rafters now.
- In not-funny related news, we are a bit puzzled by Nashville Predators forward Austin Watson’s girlfriend (and father of their newborn daughter) taking the blame for his reduced 18-game suspension. Watson participated in the banner raising last week during their home opener.
- Things did not go well for the Tennessee Titans (3-3) Sunday, losing 21-0 to the Baltimore Ravens (4-2) in a game where they were shutout for the first time ever in Nashville and had quarterback Marcus Mariota sacked 11 times. They travel to Wembley Stadium in London, England (?!) next week to face the San Diego Chargers (4-2) at 8:30 a.m. CST (?!). ??
- Vanderbilt’s football team (3-4) was unable to keep up early momentum against Florida (6-1), losing 27-37 and with both sets of coaches losing their temper as well at Dudley Stadium on West End. The Commodores have a bye week before hosting #14 Kentucky (5-1).
- The Nashville Business Journal has compiled a list of the 30 most-used transit routes in Nashville if you were curious how the buses near you stack up. The Gallatin Pike was the busiest during the survey period.
- The Nashville Scene has opened submissions for its annual photography contest. Entries cost $5 per photo for a chance to win $300.
