- While it is much cooler (and wetter) outside now, Nashville hit 97 degrees last Thursday and tied a 93-year-old record in the process. Fall weather might be on the way after all this rain moves out.
- Mayor David Briley insists that there is no “crisis” in Nashville for affordable housing, disagreeing with some harsh words for metro council members that have offered that assessment. Briley does acknowledge it is a growing problem.
- Those increased costs of living have also created havoc on child care providers, with fewer being able to retain workers and creating year-long wait lists around the city for daycares.
- Twenty one schools in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System were added to the “Priority Schools” list, meaning they are among the lowest performing in the state in terms of test scores and graduation rates. The mayor’s office highlighted that the list indicates the schools are undeserving minority and low-income students.
- Speaking of the weather, bad conditions caused the Pilgrimage Festival in Franklin to cancel its entire Sunday lineup after forcing evacuations the previous day. The festival is still working out the details for refunds.
- We hear there’s some pastries available (because of the cancellation) that will benefit recovery efforts in the Carolinas from Hurricane Florence. ?
- The Nashville Christmas Parade has made some interesting choices for its lineup, selecting Kid Rock as the grand marshal and LeAnn Rimes as its broadcast performer. The event benefits the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
- A federal appeals court has sided with anti-gay protestors in a reversal of a lawsuit filed on behalf of two street preachers that had set up outside of the Nashville Pride Festival in 2015 and were made to move across the street. A lower court had sided with the city’s request to dismiss the lawsuit.
- A 76-year-old man was critically injured at a WeGo bus stop along Gallatin Avenue Friday when witnesses say he attempted to board the bus at the rear door as it pulled away. The incident remains under investigation.
- A photographer’s collection of photos shows just how much the Nashville skyline has rapidly changed over the last few years.
- The Tennessee Titans (2-1) defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1) 9-6 in a touchdown-less and injury filled game Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville. They host the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) next Sunday.
- The Nashville Predators opened their preseason last Monday with two wins in a double header over the Florida Panthers, but had a harder time in the home-and-home series with the Tampa Bay Lightning, losing both games by wide margins — again, it is still preseason. They host the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow night at Bridgestone Arena.
- Vanderbilt University’s football team (2-2) dropped their second straight game in a loss to South Carolina (2-1). They next host the Tennessee State University Tigers (2-0) on Saturday.
- The Nashville Sounds are again changing their major league affiliation, this time going from the Oakland Athletics to the Texas Rangers. On the plus side, that’s a bit less travel for call-ups.
- WPLN’s Curious Nashville shares a bit of history of the Free Silver area of Nashville, named for a long forgotten political movement.
- For fans of Shake Shack that haven’t yet been able to get in to the Green Hills location, there will be a second location opening downtown in the Fifth + Broadway development. The development is slated to open in spring of 2020.
