- Voters defeated the “Let’s Move Nashville” transit referendum by a wide, nearly 2-1 margin Tuesday night, leaving just about everyone to offer explanations for why it failed. Supporters have said that the issues the proposal sought to solve still remain.
- One possible explanation for the transit plan’s defeat is simply a matter of where in Nashville it failed — support was concentrated in the downtown and East Nashville precincts, while suburban voters voted “No” by even larger margins. Opponents had highlighted that major plan components were limited to the major corridors.
- Mayor David Briley has prepared a budget that will provide roughly $40 million less than the district requested and only a $5 million increase over the previous year, which will likely mean further cuts to money for teaching staff. The final budget will be debated by the Metro Council.
- There were of course a bunch of other races on the ballot that saw more than 100,000 resident vote in typically a low-turnout election. Ana Escobar became the city’s first female Hispanic judge elected to the position.
- Hope your ballot pushing finger is still ready for a workout because early voting opens tomorrow for the special election for mayor and District 1 council member. Early voting will run through May 19, with the general election set for Thursday, May 24.
- A household income of $120,000 would make you “rich” according to a study of incomes that bases the designation off of earning at least twice the median household income. That number isĀ about $60,000 in Davidson County.
- The Tennessean and WSMV hosted a forum for 12 of the 13 candidates running to finish the unexpired term of former Megan Barry who resigned in March. A lot of the time was spent talking about the transit referendum’s defeat the day before.

- Waffle House hero James Shaw, Jr. was honored on the Ellen Show Wednesday and got to meet Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. He also received the check for $225,000 that he has helped raise through his GoFundMe account.
- Gibson Brands, the makers of Gibson Guitars, has filed for bankruptcy in a widely expected move intended to keep the business running while it renegotiates its debts. The Nashville based company has been in business for more than 120 years.
- An exhibit at the Frist Art Museum guides visitors through how Nashville media took sides in civil rights era reporting through photographs. The two major daily newspapers at the time — The Nashville Banner and The Tennessean — would later merge.
- Hattie B’s, the popular hot chicken restaurant, is expanding all the way to the Cosmopolitan Resort in Las Vegas. They have three Nashville locations and have opened restaurants in Memphis and Birmingham.
- The Nashville Predators gave up a three-goal first period lead in an eventual 4-7 loss to the Winnipeg Jets in Game 3 of their series, now trailing in the series 2-1. They play again at 8:30 p.m. tonight in Winnipeg before returning home for Game 5 at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
- One man was killed by a gunman at a midtown hookah bar off Church Street late Tuesday night. Police are still looking for suspects but witnesses haven’t been cooperating.
- A homeless encampment near Ellington Parkway in East Nashville gained a temporary reprieve after the mayor’s office requested an assessment of the site by the health department, so it will not be cleared today as scheduled. The site has had numerous complaints from nearby residents about the living conditions and supposed health hazards.
- More than 1,000 jobs in the financial sector could be coming to Nashville after AllianceBernstein announced their plans to relocate their corporate headquarters to the city from New York. A lot of comparisons were made to the pending Amazon HQ2 announcement, which Nashville was among the finalists.
- Conservationist and television personality Jack Hanna visited the Nashville Zoo this week to pay the zoo’s newest resident, a clouded leopard cubs. He and his wife were there to speak at a luncheon.
