- Metro Nashville Public Schools is scaling back a popular program that gave free lunch to every student regardless of family income, designed to ensure every student was fed. The revised plan will put the program into place in 74 of its more than 150 campuses.
- Because of those budget shortfalls, the district also announced that it would have layoffs at the end of the school year as part of a “restructuring” effort. Affected employees are eligible to apply for other jobs in the district.
- Matthew Charles, a man who spent 20 years behind bars before his release in 2016 and starting a new life, will have to return to prison to serve out his remaining 15 years of his original sentence. Federal sentencing guidelines are said to have restricted the judge in what she could do.
- WPLN wants to hear your questions about the upcoming transit referendum, which has seen a lot of advertising from both sides. The station will select a couple to answer in a future segment.
- Steve Cavendish over at the Nashville Scene weighs in on the election date kerfuffle, figuring that next week’s Supreme Court ruling could trigger some changes to the Metro Charter.
- In related news, council member Erica Gilmore has officially declared her candidacy for mayor whenever that election is going to be held, launching her campaign to fill the remaining term of Megan Barry. Mayor David Briley has already formally announced he wants to stay on the job.
- Jack White, Chris Stapleton, and Lionel Richie are headlining the Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival in Franklin, Tennessee this September. The two-day festival is its fourth year.
- After his resolution to rescind bonds for the proposed soccer stadium failed, council member Steve Glover has presented legislation that would move the stadium from the Tennessee State Fairgrounds to Metro Center. Observers expect this measure to fail as well, considering a settled matter.
- Soccer fans will also have to wait a bit longer before an MLS team takes (a? the?) field in Nashville, with the the group submitting the city’s World Cup bid saying the date was a typo. Nashville SC plays in a lower division currently.
- The owner of Bongo Java (there are a whole bunch of them all over town) is planning to open a new coffeehouse in North Nashville called “The Sit-In,” saying that the name nod to the civil rights history of the area. It is expected to open in mid-May.
- The oft-repeated claim that 100 people a day move to Nashville is no longer true according to reports, though the statement was already criticized for ignoring other factors. It remains to be seen what the new numbers mean for the mid-state economy.
- Remember that woman who allegedly got out of her Porsche and shot a homeless man in downtown Nashville and then went to a restaurant with her friends last year? She is now facing felony attempted murder charges.
- The Nashville Predators (49-16-11) defeated the Minnesota Wild (42-24-10) Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena 1-2 in the shootout, snapping a winless streak and securing home ice advantage in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the process. The Predators return to action tonight to host the San Jose Sharks (44-23-10) and Buffalo Sabres (24-40-12) on Saturday, with a road game in Tampa Bay (51-21-4) Sunday.
