- The Metro Council voted Tuesday to create a committee to investigate Mayor Megan Barry’s use of public money in her admitted extramarital affair. They join the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and at least two other metro agencies separately looking into the matter.
- Also on Tuesday the council voted to send a modified version of the transit referendum to the May 1 ballot, capping off two years of work to get to this point. The referendum will refer to both the present day cost of $5.4 billion as well as a projected total cost of $8.9 billion.
- The council approved a study to fix our all-our-nothing tornado siren system that has drawn a lot of criticism over the years for desensitizing residents to its wail. The study will estimate costs associated with hardware and software upgrades to they system.
- A woman who is suspected in the robbery of at least nine banks was arrested in Nashville Monday. She claimed to be acting in the name of social causes, hence the “Freedom Fighter Bandit” name.
- Finally, the council approved a larger $17 million funding package for Metro General Hospital than the one sought by the mayor’s office. The hospital was expected to run out of operating funds in April without the cash infusion.
- If you were wondering what exactly would happen if the mayor were to resign or be forced out of office, a metro councilman has a Twitter thread for you. The short version is that Vice Mayor David Briley would take over, and a special election would be called if it happens prior to August 2018, one year before the current term expires.
- The Nashville Predators (32-12-8) beat the New York Islanders (26-22-6) 5-4 in overtime Monday night before dropping a game in a seven-round shootout 2-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs (32-19-5). Their four-game road trip continues tonight in Ottawa against the Senators (19-25-9) before wrapping up in Montreal against the Canadiens (22-25-6) on Saturday.
- A confederate monument at Mount Olivet Cemetary was found vandalized Tuesday with various symbols from BLM and Anti-fascist groups. The monument, erected in 1889, is said to mark the graves of five confederate generals.
- Two pastors from predominantly black churches have joined an opposition group called “NoTax4Tracks” lead by Lee Beaman and Joe Scarlett. Organizers for the pro-transit coalitions say it is inappropriate for the pastors to tell their congregations how to vote.
- Not sure which rodent predicted 4-6 more weeks of flu season, but we would like word with it.
- The formerĀ 65-acre site of Starwood Amphitheater in Antioch may finally be redeveloped into 200 townhomes, 150 senior housing units, 200 loft apartments, and retail and office space. The structures on the property were demolished in 2007 after the venue closed the year prior.
- A finance blog ranked Tennessee the eighth worst state to grow old in, which took into account education, income and health.
