- Nashville (at least those folks that post on the internet) is very upset about Demetria Kalodimos’s unceremonious departure from WSMV last month, allegedly fired by way of a note left on her desk. This is the same station that fired Snowbird last year, so they aren’t exactly batting a thousand over there.
- We now know the date and time for the planned implosion of the LifeWay tower in downtown Nashville: 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, January 6. There will be numerous road closures for would-be spectators to contend with as police will keep onlookers at least 700 feet away from the site.
- Riverbend Maximum Security Prison, located in the northwest corner of the city, was without heat since Tuesday because of a mechanical failure. Officials say about half the prison has heat again with overnight temperatures dipping into the low teens.
- WTVF has compiled a list of local shelters as temperatures continue to be brutally cold. Nashville police remain on Cold Patrol to find folks who try to sleep outside.
- The Metro Council advanced the “compromise” bill favored by short-term rental operators to regulate their booming business in Nashville on its second reading Tuesday night. A more restrictive bill gradually banning non-owner occupied short-term rentals is expected to be presented in two weeks.
- In other council news, the body appointed a member from its ranks to the General Sessions court for the second time in a year, angering advocates and some council members who believe that a more qualified candidate was passed up. Nick Leonardo will serve in the current position until the May 1 elections.
- There were 106 murders recorded in Nashville in 2017, the most in the city in 20 years. Police say a 16 year old Maplewood High School student was killed on New Year’s Eve by a 12 year-old with a stolen weapon.
- The Nashville Predators (23-11-5) lost 0-3 against the story-of-the-season Vegas Golden Knights (27-9-2). They fly on to Los Angeles to face the Kings (24-11-5) Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. local time.
- Also in hockey news, the Predators found out they will be without star forward Filip Forsberg for 4-6 weeks with an upper-body injury. ?
- Folks are pretty excited about the Titans returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2008, as evident by the sudden surge in merchandise sales at local retailers. They travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs in the Wildcard Round at 3:35 p.m. Saturday.
- PSA: Leaving a running car in your driveway is basically an open invitation for thieves to steal it. Cars with readily accessible keys made up more than 70 percent of auto thefts in the final week of 2017.
- The thieves smashed a woman’s car window in to steal her purse in July at an East Nashville dog park have now used her identification to drain her bank account just before Christmas.
- A non-profit focused on reporting transit news alleges that Nashville media is being “played” by transit opponents about the upcoming referendum vote on a $5.4 plan put forward by the mayor called “Let’s Move Nashville.”
- The cold weather will prevent the mobile emissions testing vans from operating through at least Friday, which is important news for folks that are late renewing their tags.
- And finally, a (very small) giant anteater appropriately named Noel was born at the Nashville Zoo on Christmas Day.
