- Welcome to 2018! Here is a recap of all the things that became law in Tennessee at midnight.
- The Tennessee Titans (9-7) are going to the playoffs for the first time since 2008 following a 10-15 win over the Division Champion Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6). They will take on the Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) at 3:35 p.m. Saturday in Kansas City in the Wild Card round.
- There were seven murders in and around James Cayce Homes, a housing project in East Nashville. The complex has more than 200 security cameras, but that has not deterred the shootings.
- It has been 20 years ago this week that Nashville’s Opryland USA amusement park closed to make way for the Opry Mills Mall. The park featured 27 rides including six roller coasters and three water rides.
- The city of Nashville said goodbye to a lot of influential people in the world of politics, entertainment and activism in 2017.
- Anyone who bought from Jason’s Deli is probably going to get a new credit or debit card and some free credit monitoring after a massive data breach was discovered.
- Watch out for a scam where a faked caller ID will say they are with the health department and need your health insurance information. Officials say they would never call you for that information
- WPLN has a look at a distinctive “Nashville Accent” that is disappearing rapidly. Imagine a time when you could tell somebody was from Nashville by the sound of their voice.
- A house fire in South Nashville has been blamed on an overheating “hoverboard”, the two-wheeled toy that is somehow still for sale after numerous similar incidents nationwide.
- A man was freed from federal prison after nearly 20 years behind bars and has begun a new life as a volunteer and activist, but now the courts are saying he must go back and finish out the rest of his original sentence. A judge has asked the prosecutor to review his case after reading the linked story.
- The cold temperatures can be fatal for outdoor pets, according to a local non-profit trying to raise public awareness about the issue and save lives. A 2015 city ordinance makes it illegal to leave animals tethered outside in freezing temperatures.
- The Nashville Predators (23-10-5) lost Friday night 2-4 before turning in a 0-3 shutout over the Minnesota Wild (20-16-3) on Saturday to briefly take over the lead in the Central Division. The Preds head out to Las Vegas to face the Western Conference-leading Golden Knights (25-9-2) tomorrow night.
- Advocates are again bracing for a busy few days and nights trying to protect the city’s homeless population from serious injury or death from the sub-freezing temperatures. Folks are urged to call 862-8600 if they encounter somebody attempting to sleep outside.
- The cold weather also can wreak havoc on your indoor plumbing whether you are a renter, homeowner or run a business. Plumbers suggest allowing your pipes to drip overnight and opening cabinet doors to let warm air reach vulnerable indoor pipes.
- Happy New Year, y’all! ?
