It’s Tuesday All Week At The Family Wash, And You Know What That Means…

Pies! Pints! It’s 8am and our bellies are already rumbling at the mere mention of the Family Wash‘s Pie & Pint night. Usually a Tuesday-only treat, Pie & Pint night at the Family Wash nets you a famous shepherd’s pie and a frosty pint of beer for just $10 (a pie by itself is regularly priced at $11). And to celebrate the 10th birthday of Shortsets, the Wash’s weekly songwriter night, the bargain pies & pints will be available every night this week (November 16-20)!

Shortsets is celebrating its tenth birthday with a full week of “short” sets at the Family Wash, starting tonight. The nightly Shortsets performances each night will feature founder Cole Slivka and her husband Paul, plus three showcase artists, totaling 20 sets from 16 artists over the course of the week. The final act each night will perform a full-band set, and because this is Nashville, you just never know who might show up. Accompanied by a full week of Pie & Pint nights, we’re pretty sure there’s nowhere else we’d rather fuel up this week!

Tuesday, November 16: Cole & Paul Slivka, Warren Pash, Joe Pagetta, Josh Bennett
Wednesday, November 17: Cole & Paul Slivka, Gwil Owen, Kevin Gordon, The Mike & Mark Show
Thursday, November 18: Cole & Paul Slivka, TBA, Erik Dail, The Magnificent Others
Friday, November 19: Cole & Paul Slivka, Colleen McFarland, Richard Douglas, Reeves Gabrels
Saturday, November 20: Cole & Paul Slivka, TBA, Tom Mason, Tommy Womack

The Family Wash opens at 6pm, and Shortsets starts at 8pm. Call ahead to hold your table, because the place fills up!

Happy Hour: Don’t Drink The ________

  • The Rutherford County jail is slashing more than $100K from their food budget by, uh, not serving inmates Kool-Aid. Or coffee, or salt and pepper, or jelly. But the point here is that they were previously spending $26,000 on Kool-Aid. [WSMV]
  • Brentwood bought a 320-acre plot of land for $10 million to build a park, which will increase their park lands by 50%. [WSMV]
  • Belmont started blasting holes in the ground for their fancy new law school and the dynamiting is scheduled to continue through February. So if you live over there, Godspeed. [Tennessean]
  • The controversial Bells Bend debate may be back at the forefront now that developer Jack May says he’d like to revive his May Town Center plans in a much smaller form. [Tennessean]
  • In case you missed the big reveal of Lighthouse Christian School on Extreme Makeover yesterday, here is a nice photo gallery of the new digs. [Tennessean]

Bright & Early: Party Party Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Today’s the big day for the Opryland Hotel & Convention Center’s grand reopening. After being closed for more than six full months, losing out on about $40 million in revenue–not to mention, about $5 million in tax revenue for the city–they’ll be throwing a big ol’ party for the next few days and showing off their massive $270 million face lift. They’ve replaced miles of carpet and countless furniture pieces, added five new restaurants, revamped the check-in counters and even added a Porter Waggoner suite with an entire wall panel designed by the guy who designed Waggoner’s crazy outfits. They’re hoping that the grand reopening bash will draw enough media attention to let the world know that they’re back in business. And that we, Nashville, are also back in business. Go us.

Bright & Early: Questions And More Questions Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Vanderbilt, Fisk and Belmont universities are among about 400 schools that may soon ask students to declare their sexual orientation during the application process. A nonprofit called Common Application brought the idea to the table, saying that it will help schools measure diversity of sexual orientation much like diversity of race and gender. Others are concerned that students won’t be comfortable disclosing that kind of information on an application, or aren’t even out to family and friends at the time they apply. The question would, of course, be optional.

Happy Hour: All Good Things

  • Our beloved Davis-Kidd Booksellers location in Green Hills will be peacing out at the end of the year after its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Kentucky. The store just passed its 30-year anniversary last month and will definitely missed by many of us. The only silver lining is the liquidation sale slated to run from the middle of November until closing. [Nashville Post]
  • Metro Police have made several big heroin busts in the West End area this week, arresting six people by busting up sales at the Walgreens near West End and Blakemore, Centennial Park and a nearby Kroger. [WSMV]
  • Wilson Central High School students worked long and hard through the week to fix up a mural honoring Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans after someone vandalized it on Monday. [WTVF]
  • Sarah Palin will be making a pit stop in Brentwood on the next leg of her book tour at the end of the month. [Tennessean]
  • The mosque construction site in Murfreesboro continues to be a swirling vortex of drama, and now residents are up in arms about some cameras that were installed on light poles around the site following the recent vandalism and believe the government might be spying on them. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: Many Thanks Edition

Good morning, Nashville, and a special Veterans Day shout-out to our servicemen and women. Festivities will be underway in about an hour downtown with the annual Veterans Day parade down Broadway, stretching from 14th Ave. to 3rd Ave. So if you’re in the area, be aware of road closures and get out there and thank a veteran if you can.

  • Don’t forget- CMA Awards tonight! Street closures here. [WSMV]
  • The Metro Council is prepping for a second vote on a measure that would create special free parking spaces for folks who drive hybrid, electric and otherwise green cars. [City Paper]
  • The world can definitely use a good rogue peacock story every now and again. [WTVF]
  • Metro is looking into an incident in which a lot of school bus drivers called out sick on the same day. They think it might have happened on purpose, though the bus drivers union insists it was just a coincidence. [WSMV]
  • Officials estimate that Nashville lost the equivalent of one year of economic activity due to the May flooding. [Tennessean]
  • But on the bright side, Tennessee’s sales tax collections were at their highest since April 2007. Go forth and buy things! [Tennessean]

Happy Hour: Don’t Mind The Glare

  • Though Nashville’s awesome community education program is shutting down due to lack of funding, the Adult Literacy Council will thankfully still be able to do their thing. [WSMV]
  • The Office of Emergency Management has beefed up our city’s emergency response system so that if we have another flood-like incident (heaven forbid!) they’ll be able to send out their own emergency broadcast messages instead of waiting on the National Weather Service. [City Paper]
  • There will be a live hysterectomy unfolding on Twitter this Thursday–pictures and all–courtesy of the Middle Tennessee Medical Center. Follow along @yourMTMC. [WSMV]
  • Yes, people are still cleaning up flood debris and pieces of people’s homes along the banks of the Harpeth River. And yes, they still need some volunteer help. [WSMV]

Bright & Early: When The Circus Comes To Town Edition

Good morning, Nashville. Crews are busy setting up for the miniature one-night version of CMApocalypse that some also know as the CMA Awards. The show is entering its 44th year and will take place tomorrow night at the Bridgestone Arena at 7pm. We’ll also have the added bonus of Dierks Bentley filming a Good Morning America performance early tomorrow morning, which should do wonders for your morning commute! But hey, thousands of tourists are pouring into our city tomorrow because they love us, and probably also because we are so darn good-looking. We also don’t have flood debris laying around this time, so that’s a plus. Bring it on!
