Happy Hour: Illegal Wood
- Some serious somethin’ is going down at Gibson Guitars involving the use of really expensive endangered wood from Madagascar. A statement by Gibson clarified that the US Fish and Wildlife Service seized some guitars and files to investigate a possible violation. [Nashville Post]
- Metro Parks Director Roy Wilson, the guy who’s being blamed for the department’s nearly $2 million budget shortfall, informed his employees that he’ll be resigning and taking another job out of state. [City Paper]
- In related news, Metro may be using the rainy day fund to cover that accidental deficit. [WKRN]
- Mayor Dean has extended the life of the Fairgrounds through the end of 2010 in hopes of having some extra time to figure out what to do with it. [WTVF]
- We thought we’d heard the end of the whole Guns In Parks bill, but apparently not. [WKRN]

Tonight: AA Bondy & Elvis Perkins At The Mercy Lounge

Once in a blue moon, Nashvillest gets so excited about some live music rolling through town that we can’t help but share our love with y’all, and tonight’s Elvis Perkins/AA Bondy bill at the Mercy Lounge meets the criteria. A mellow evening of melodic folk music by a pair of top-notch songwriters? Yes please. Opener AA Bondy has toured with the likes of Bon Iver and Conor Oberst, and we spent so much time spinning his debut record that we were reluctant to make room for his August release, When The Devil’s Loose (but we’re oh-so-glad that we did).
Headliner Elvis Perkins won our hearts with “Shampoo,” the gritty, bittersweet single off of his sophomore effort Elvis Perkins in Dearland. Swinging trombones, yawning harmonicas, and heart-heavy melodies mesh the soul of a subway busker with the richness of a seasoned composer.
If you’re not sold on shelling out $10 for a ticket tonight, check out AA Bondy’s 6pm in-store at Grimey’s tonight. It’s free, but don’t say we didn’t warn you if you find yourself heading toward the Mercy Lounge at 9pm for more.

Thursday: Watch Opryland Get Lit At Annual Lighting Ceremony

What’s more impressive than watching someone flip the switch on two million Christmas lights? Meteor showers aside, not much. Opryland’s annual A Country Christmas celebration is coming up this Thursday, and one of the many highlights is the traditional Lighting Ceremony. Opryland’s Christmas light display is a Nashvillest winter staple, as a must-see spot for visiting friends, and gives us an excuse to play hide-and-seek get lost inside the massive property on a whim.
A Country Christmas will be hosted by Montgomery Gentry and feature appearances by Paula Deen, Louise Mandrell, The Rockettes and Jeannie Schulz with Snoopy. The show is free and open to the public, and we might as well use this whole dark-at-5pm thing to our advantage. Christmas light show at 5:30pm is totally do-able!

Bright & Early: We Can Swing That Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Metro Councilman Mike Jameson has suggested that the Metro Development and Housing Agency stop buying up all of the land around the proposed Music City Center until the project is actually approved. Some businesses targeted by MDHA aren’t going down without a fight, such as the Musicians Hall of Fame–owners claim that Metro isn’t offering them a fair price for their space and is already going back on an earlier offer to house the new hall of fame inside the convention center.
- BCBS data breach. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee has confirmed that the information of several thousand customers were stolen from a Chattanooga office back in October and “may have included the member’s date of birth and social security number.” If you were affected, you should be receiving a letter and a year of complimentary identity theft protection.
- Desperate times? The latest money-saving strategy being considered by the State of Tennessee is the release of 4,000 inmates, which would save an estimated $50 million for the Department of Corrections.
- Bits & pieces. Consider this your reminder that the deer are bangin’ and thus are more likely to hop out in front of your car this time of year … We hope you got to see the Atlantis shuttle lift-off yesterday because the pilot is from Mt. Juliet … Folks are still fighting over the West Precinct move … ESPN Radio is back in Nashville!
