Jeremy Piven and Ed Helms made a surprise appearance at Tootsies tonight. Your Nashvillest editors managed to scramble out of the house fast enough to catch Piv at the drumset in a rousing rendition of “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Happy Hour: Bearing Some Arms
- Metro Police Sgt. Mark Chesnut is out of the hospital and in rehab recovering from the gunshot wounds and internal injuries he sustained last month in a routine traffic stop gone wrong on I-40. The shooter and accomplice are still in jail in Davidson County awaiting trial. [WKRN]
- A Maury County woman who accidentally killed her husband during a bondage sex game was sentenced to 18 months in jail today for negligent homicide. Moral of the story: Don’t leave your husband bound and gagged in the house for 24 hours. [WKRN]
- If you’re hoping to get to a Titans game this season and don’t feel like shelling out the dough, 10 area Krogers are giving away pairs of tickets on Saturday. We just wouldn’t recommend trying to do any actual grocery shopping at Kroger that day. [WSMV]
- A Nashville judge threw out the lawsuit aiming to block the Guns in Bars bill, meaning that it’ll go into effect as planned at 12:01AM tonight. [WKRN]
- In related news, the Williamson County Commission unanimously passed a resolution to opt out of the state’s new law allowing guns in public parks. [WTVF]

West Nile Is Back [Reality Bites]
It wouldn’t be summer in Tennessee without a swarm of mosquitoes and a good West Nile outbreak. Today, the first batch of mosquitoes testing positive for the virus showed up in East Nashville near the intersection of Rosebank Ave. and Colbert Dr. Though it hasn’t affected any humans and the city doesn’t plan on spraying yet, the Health Department is keeping an eye on it. A few tips from Metro:
The most likely method of WNV transmission to humans and other animals is by biting mosquitoes that are carrying the disease. Therefore, the Health Department recommends community members take the following steps to protect against mosquito bites, including:
- Limit time outdoors at dusk and nighttime hours when mosquitoes are present.
- When outdoors wear a mosquito repellent that is approved for use by the CDC – those include products that contain DEET, Picaridin, and Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
- Wear shoes, socks, long sleeve shirts and pants when outdoors during dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most prevalent. Clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials to keep mosquitoes away from the skin. Pant legs should be tucked into shoes or socks, and collars should be buttoned.
- Make sure your windows and doors have screens and are in good repair.
The Health Department asks community members to reduce or eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by removing standing water in your yard – especially in children’s toys, bird baths, clogged gutters, tires, flowerpots, trash cans, and wheelbarrows, as well as cutting back overgrown vegetation (mosquito hiding areas).
For more information about West Nile virus and mosquito precautions visit the Metro Public Health Department’s website at www.health.nashville.gov or call 340-5660.

McDonald’s Mocha Mondays [Freebies]
McDonald’s is pouring oodles of advertising money into taking over Starbucks, or so it seems. We’re fairly unimpressed with McDonald’s coffee, since it’s not really that much cheaper and certainly not better than visiting one of the 6,928 independently-owned coffee shops for our morning pick-me-up. But for the low cost of free, we might be persuaded to try out McDonald’s new espresso drinks – Exactly what they’re hoping to accomplish with new McDonald’s Mocha Mondays.
Every Monday, beginning today and running through August 3, McDonald’s will give out free sample size (8oz) iced or hot mochas in hopes that we’ll all build up Pavlovian responses and flock to McDonald’s every Monday morning for the rest of our lives. The offer is valid from 7am-7pm at participating McDonald’s.
Call your McDonald’s of choice before visiting to ensure that they are participating. We love our readers, but not enough to call every Mickey D’s in town.

Bright & Early: Blackout Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Hopefully you’re all waking up with A/C and electricity despite the storms last night. NES has been working around the clock to restore power to more than 4,500 households after last night’s bout of severe weather. Good news is, it cooled things off a bit and today shouldn’t be quite as muggy as the past few days. Hey, we’ll take it.
- “A very cute alien.” Here’s a heartwarming story for your Monday morning: Tennessee’s tiniest surviving baby turns 1 today. Baby Becca was born at Vandy 12 weeks early weighing 13 ounces last year. She’s still pretty small for her age, but she’s doing great. And our favorite part of this story is where here parents told the newspaper that she looked like an alien.
- Surprise! A Franklin couple is a little upset after the people who were renting their home allegedly turned it into a boarding house for a dozen Chinese sushi restaurant workers. According to the couple, the tenants built walls and partitions, labeled the bathrooms “men” and “women,” and allowed 12-14 employees to live there at a time.
- Bits & pieces. The ‘Noog is getting creative in finding ways to help their homeless, this time by giving them “a bit of empowerment” through free bicycles … The Wildlife Resources Agency will be poking around Centennial Park today trying to figure out why several fish and birds were found dead over the weekend … A food stamp hike has come in pretty handy for a lot of Nashvillians … If the Spring Hill GM plant ends up closing down, many of the workers might be moving to Michigan.
A year ago on Nashvillest: We learned an important lesson about country music from Snoop Dogg, dodged the iPhone 3G stampede at the Green Hills Mall, and looked at our town tilt-shift style.
