Happy Hour: A Wider Load
- We could’ve sworn we read something about the Hillsboro Road expansion being delayed, but no, it actually started last night and we have seen it with our own eyes. [WSMV]
- The new owner of the Hummer has been in talks with Williamson County to move the Hummer HQ there. And as much as excessive cars pain us, we could sure use the jobs. [Tennessean]
- In an effort to save the bats in Tennessee, the state has closed up all caves on public land in hopes that the deadly bat-killing fungus that’s wreaked all sorts of havoc in other states won’t spread to ours. [Tennessean]
- We’ve got ourselves a brand new electronics recycling plant! In… Murfreesboro. [WSMV]
- Police have determined that the ominous Myspace comment they found yesterday “predicting” Steve McNair’s death two days ahead of time was actually posted after the murder. [WKRN]
- LP Field is opening its doors to mourning fans who want a place to hang out and remember Steve McNair. They’ll have a place to donate to his foundation, a highlight reel playing on the jumbotron, and a book you can sign. [WKRN]

Summer Theme Park Fun: What’s A (Poor) Nashvillian To Do?
Ever since the untimely demise of Opryland (RIP), Nashvillians looking for some summer theme park fun have had to haul themselves out of town, for the most part. Well, nothing has really changed, but we’re here to make hauling the family out of town just a little bit easier. With steep discounts, freebies and even free transportation, taking the kids to ride some rollercoasters can be mostly fun and only a little frazzle.
Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom is just a few hours’ drive, and if you purchase tickets online (or at Arby’s), everyone pays the kids’ price of $24.99! Or make a weekend of it and buy the Big Six Pass, which includes six visits for just $29.99 through November. Head down on a Starburst Summer Concert day and get even more bang for your buck – concert tickets are included in the price of admission.
We’ll just go ahead and admit it – We’re REALLY excited about Holiday World. We can’t wait to make the trek to Santa Claus, Indiana to visit wonderful Thanksgivingland and 4th of Julyland and see a play about good ol’ Honest Abe. And for just $34, the Holiday World Express “luxurious motorcoach” will pick you up from one of its stops in Murfreesboro, Cool Springs, Donelson or Rivergate, and take you straight to Holiday World. Admission included in the $34! Holiday World also boasts free unlimited soft drinks and sunblock. Regular admission price is $39.95 and does NOT include a luxurious motorcoach ride from Nashville to Santa Claus. Can’t beat that!
Nashville Shores is still hanging on in town, and half price tickets to a waterpark are sounding really good right now. Grab two regular admission tickets for $25, half the usual price.
HOMETOWN TOURISM
Theme parks a little wild for the whole family? The Nashville Visitor’s Bureau is offering some great deals this summer on local attractions. Stop by the Visitor Center in the Sommet Center to grab a book of 2-for-1 coupons to the Adventure Science Center, Nashville Zoo, Cheekwood, Delta Riverboats at Opryland, Frist Center, The Hermitage, Music City Duck Tours and even Nashville Shores.
Or grab a Music City Total Access Pass for $45, and get admission to four participating attractions of your choice, plus bonus admission to the Parthenon. If you stack the attractions with the hefty admission prices, you’re bound to come out ahead. Choose Nashville Shores ($25), Music City Duck Tours ($20), General Jackson Showboat cruise ($20) and the Nashville Zoo ($14), and you’re saving at least $34 (the perfect amount to tuck away for that trip to Holiday World).

Lightning 100 Announces New Outdoor Concert Series
A throwback to the days of Uptown Mix (who remembers that?), Lightning 100 has a brand new free outdoor concert series up their sleeves, and the first official details were announced today. Live On The Green will launch this September, and wil take place every Thursday evening from September 3 – October 8 in the Public Square Plaza over by the Nashville Courthouse. The currently confirmed artists include Citizen Cope, Here Come the Mummies, Space Capone and Ricky Young, but Lightning 100 promises us that Live On The Green will feature some “national touring acts with roots in the Music City” too, so we’ll be keeping our eyes out for more big announcements.

Photo Of The Day: July 7, 2009
In the age of Photoshop filters, it’s always refreshing to see some for-real, honest-to-goodness lomography. Flickr user sjcapps experimented with a few different subjects around Nashville using a four-lense SuperSampler and this junkyard shot was one of our favorites.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: It Ain’t Over Edition
Good morning, Nashville. Life at the Spring Hill GM plant has been a rollercoaster over the past few months with the announcement that production would halt indefinitely after November and the subsequent loss of the bid for GM’s new smaller car. The latest talk involves several new manufacturing possibilities that could keep the plant open. Though it’s still “just speculation,” the Tennessean reports that the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, a car-based pickup truck, or even the next generation Chevy Escalade could be in the cards.
- No jobs for us. With the nearly 11% unemployment rate in our state has a lot of people wondering why we’re still outsourcing state call centers to India. The Department of Human Services contracts with companies that use India-based call centers to manage incoming calls regarding some social services. Many folks wonder if the tax dollars saved by the contracts are worth keeping the jobs overseas.
- More questions. In another bizarre twist in the McNair case, police have discovered that some guy may have updated his Myspace status two days before the murder to read, “Who is McNair in 09? RIP Sahel Kazemi.” They’re working to verify that it was actually posted on July 2nd, but it looks a tad bit suspicious.
- Bits & pieces. Some officials in Williamson County are reluctant to jump on board with the effort to ban guns in local parks … BMI is sending some jobs our way from NYC … We’re jealous of the Memphis Zoo because they have a new baby elephant.
A year ago on Nashvillest: We were still a little shocked by the enormous Music City Star fail on the Fourth of July, congratulated Keith and Nicole on the birth of Sunday Rose, chuckled at some truly mixed reviews, and discovered a whole underground city in Madison.
