Happy Hour: If The Storms Don’t Get You, Something Else Will

- The nasty tornader that tore its way through Murfreesboro on Friday has officially been upgraded to an EF-4, which indicates winds from 166-200 miles per hour. [WKRN]
- The pistachios are out to get us now (at least the ones sold in Harris Teeter). [Nashville Business Journal]
- Among the ranks of the unemployed here in the Nashville area? Five Star Custom Foods, a Texas-based meat processor, plans to open a new processing plant which will eventually employ around 250 people in the Nashville area… Sometime in the next three years. [Tennessean]
- We’ll be steering clear of the Cool Springs TJ Maxx for a while while they fix their magical collapsible ceiling! [Tennessean]
- And yet again, Fox 17 brings the LOLZ with their latest gag headline, “Competition Determines Who Has The Hardest Eggs.” [WZTV]

More Smoothies, Please: Fresh Blends To Open Belmont Location

With smoothie weather quickly approaching, this is some of the best news we’ve heard in a while – East Nashville smoothie shop Fresh Blends is opening a second location on Belmont Blvd., right next to the new Subway and across the street from Athlete’s House. (Oh, how we wish we had such fortune during our days at Belmont.)
Fresh Blends strives to use local and natural ingredients in their smoothies, juices and foods (read our first interview with owner David Edwards here). Fresh Blends’ Belmont location is scheduled to open in early May, and we’ll keep you posted on the date of their grand opening celebration.

Bright & Early: Monday, Monday Edition

Good morning, Nashville. More details continue to surface about the tornados that touched down in Murfreesboro on Friday. The EF-3 twister carried sustained winds of up to 165 mph, killed 2, injured 47, destroyed 94 homes and businesses, and damaged more than 400. New mother Kori Bryant and her 9-week old daughter were killed when the tornado plowed through their home, also leaving husband and father John Bryant with a punctured lung and broken back. As of this morning, John is still recovering in the hospital. The folks over at NashMash have joined friends and family to create a fund at Bank of America that will help carry the cost of the funerals, damage, and medical expenses for the Bryants. If you’d like to contribute, you can do so at any Bank of America, or online via PayPal.
- Never gonna give you up. Our Preds were eliminated from the playoffs on Friday night, and the Tennessean wishes to add insult to injury by pointing out that the franchise misses out on around $750K of revenue per home playoff game they would’ve hosted.
- Never gonna let you down. The folks in Gallatin are starting to question how the TVA ash ponds in their community would hold up in the case of a flood. The ponds are all situated on floodplains, which the TVA says is not a problem, but oddly enough, the TVA doesn’t seem to be a real credible source these days.
- Bits & pieces. The severe weather onslaught continues this afternoon and evening with the threat of heavy storms and hail … According to the latest report released by the Metro PD, crime is actually down this year in Nashville … Easter was a little different from expected for one Murfreesboro congregation … Office space? We got it.

Nashville Mass Transit Week: April 13-19

Today marks the beginning of Nashville’s Mass Transit Week, a week dedicated to introducing folks in Nashville to that foreign idea called Taking The Bus (no, not a tour bus), as well as “raising awareness of the benefits of regional mass transit options for the people living in the Nashville area” (via Transit Now Nashville). For each day of the week, Transit Now Nashville has created either an event or an actionable goal for Nashvillians who would like to learn and participate more in mass transit options around town.
So take the pledge to ride the bus this week as we take steps as a community to improve our somewhat dismal public transportation system. It starts with us, right?
P.S. – If you need a little help getting excited about hopping on the bus, give their catchy new jingle a listen. Who could hate the bus after that?!
