Happy Hour: Things We Wish We Never Knew

  • So are we the only ones who had no idea you could make meth from urine? Leave it to East Tennessee, right? ;) [Tennessean]
  • Don’t forget: TDOT is shutting down I-40W this weekend between the I-440 split and the I-40/I-24 split near downtown. Plan accordingly! [WKRN]
  • Some churches are being socially responsible and using “Eco-Palms,” or Fair Trade palm branches, for Palm Sunday. [WTVF]
  • Apparently folks “spent Friday and most of the weekend” which hasn’t happened yet cleaning up the mess from the tornado. [WTVF]
  • When the going gets tough, the Nashville Convention Center and the Municipal Auditorium think about pooling their staff. [Tennessean]
  • A local couple is collecting backpacks for our homeless folks. [WSMV]
  • Former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich’s Nashvillian brother Rob (whose hair is far less impressive than his brother’s) is fighting federal charges of wire fraud in connection with Blago’s campaign fund. [Tennessean]

Happy Mule Day! And tomorrow, happy Mule Day! Did you know that in Columbia, TN, just a stone’s throw away, it’s been Mule Day since March 30 – and will continue to be Mule Day until Sunday. The weekend is heavy with Mule-y events like mule pulling, knife auctions, mule parades, square dancing (hopefully not by the mules), clogging (ditto), and boy, could we go on and on. So uh, take a little field trip this weekend. And let us know how it is.

FRIDAY

  • Brian Regan at The Ryman. 8pm, tickets range from $35.50-$40.50.
  • Tin Pan South. 6:30pm & 9:30pm shows every night through the weekend.
  • Music City Mayhem. Doors at 4pm, show at 7pm, Yazoo Brewery. Lightning 100 has arrived at their Final Four in their Music City Mayhem contest between a whole bunch of local musicians. Maureen Murphy, Daniel Ellsworth, Parachute Musical and Moon Taxi will be playing at Yazoo tonight, and it’s free!
  • The Privates’ CD Release Show. 9pm at The Basement, 21+, $10.

Photo Of The Day: April 3, 2009 [Feel Good Friday]

Even the elephants at the Nashville Zoo are ready for spring! (Okay, so this was taken three years ago, but we know this is what they would be doing if it were warm and green and sunny and tornado-less outside.) Photo by joshbousel.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: (Don’t) Light ‘Em Up Edition

Good morning, Nashville. The State of Tennessee is cracking down on its employees’ bad habits by charging them 50 bucks if they can’t quit smoking by October 1. The new mandate goes for all state employees and spouses who are covered under the state health insurance plan. And for those needing a little extra help stepping away from the cigs, they’ll be providing counseling, drugs (crack?), and nicotine gum. So after y’all smoke your way through the cartons of cigarettes you bought this week before the tax hike, it may be time to give quitting a try.

Not-So-Thirsty-Thursdays At Greer Stadium In 2009

Don’t head to the newly-remodeled Greer Stadium next Thursday expecting to enjoy drink specials while you watch the Sounds play their season opener against the New Orleans Zephyrs. Though information has been (purposefully) vague, it doesn’t take a genius to check out the Sounds’ Promotional Schedule and notice the absence of what some would consider an essential Nashville tradition: Thirsty Thursdays.

We first noticed conflicting reports a few weeks ago, with The Tennessean reporting that the season would open with a Thirsty Thursday, The City Paper reporting that the promotion would be trimmed down to once a month, and talk at Yazoo about a partnership with the Sounds for Thirsty Thursdays. It wasn’t until yesterday that The City Paper confirmed our worst fears, that Thirsty Thursdays are indeed no more. Instead, the Sounds’ promotional schedule is packed full of all-ages fun this year. We’ll see Sundae Sundays, Reading Club Days, Autograph Days, Faith Nights and the usual three tons of fireworks, but no particularly enticing deals on booze.

Of course, there’s always a silver lining. We might have to pay full price, but the Yazoo will indeed be flowing at Sounds games this year, they haven’t done away with Dollar Dog Days (yet, those fun-suckers), and tickets are still dirt cheap ($6 for general admission). So hey! If we can manage to brush this chip off our shoulder about Thirsty Thursdays, you’ll probably find us at a few games this year anyway.
