Happy Hour: Important Business

  • Unless you’re hitting up the Nashville Gas Christmas parade or tree lighting ceremony tonight, you’re better off to steer clear of downtown! [Tennessean]
  • Bad news, y’all–Kenny Chesney supposedly has a new girlfriend, who was Miss Tennessee in 2005. [WSMV]
  • Out of all the landmarks in the United States, we’re pretty proud that the Autisim Self Advocacy Network has picked the Parthenon as the spot to film their nationwide public service announcement. [WTVF]
  • A restaurant in Harriman, Tennessee (on the way to Knoxville) was caught serving up some crack cocaine and marijuana instead of just food this week. [Tennessean]
  • Guided by an ultralight, a flock of endangered Whooping Cranes sure picked a chilly day to make their way across Tennessee today on the way down to Florida for the winter. [Tennessean]
  • Titans defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson is suspended without pay for the next four games for a steroid violation. [City Paper]

Music City Star: (Hopefully) Back On Track

Will the Music City Star be able to hold up to the demands of tonight’s Christmas festivities downtown? MTA seems to think so. After this year’s 4th of July fiasco, no one wants to see the Music City Star fail again. They’ll have all seven of the Music City Star cars running tonight, with busses on standby just in case. There will be a special 9:30pm trip out of Nashville to accommodate parade-goers, so if you’re out that way and don’t want to battle the traffic and parking, grab a ticket and join us! Tickets are $5 one way or $10 round trip.

The Economic Blues [Mixed Reviews]

The Mixed Reviews From People Who Don’t Live Here have been few and far between in the past couple months. And, we hate to say, they’re mostly bad, with a little bit of cheery news (for Murfreesboro, at least) mixed in there. Ah, such is life.

Murfreesboro came in as the 5th Best Place To Raise A Family from BusinessWeek, beating out 635 other qualifying cities. Bravo for the ‘Boro! Maybe Nashville didn’t make the cut because of our crime rate, since we rank 53rd out of all U.S. metropolitan areas. The good news there is that Knoxville and Memphis are more dangerous than we are (but the ‘Noog is not). We’re also now the 4th Most Unhealthy State Ever. Or something. Last year we were the 5th Most Unhealthy State Ever, but we are, uh, moving on up. And lastly, in addition to our unhealthy and crime-related woes, Tennessee ranks 14th for signs of economic distress, which they figured out by noticing that we’re 20th in the nation for foreclosures, we have the 10th highest unemployment rate, and we had the 30th largest growth in food stamp program participants. Pleasant news, isn’t it?

Super Cheap Eats From… Clear Channel?

We’ve just discovered that local Clear Channel stations The Big 98 WSIX and 107.5 The River are frequently selling really, really cheap gift certificates. With Christmas around the corner, we’re a little disappointed we didn’t find out about it sooner – But there’s still a few weeks to grab some gifts. And after Christmas, we’ll grab them for ourselves!

So check it out. The Big 98′s Gerry House has a site: GerrysHalfOff.com. On his site, he sells half price gift certificates to local businesses. They go on sale at 8am every Friday, and today’s biggest deals have already sold out (sorry) but as of this posting, there are still a handful of Wildhorse Saloon and Cookies By Design deals left.

Then there’s RiverRewards.com, where 107.5 The River’s Woody & Jim post their own set of deals in the exact same format. They still have a bunch of half price gift certificates left today, including some to Maggie Moos, McFadden’s and Oasis Wellness

And then… there’s more. For some reason, having two sites for two stations wasn’t enough, and Clear Channel came up with NashvilleGreatDeals.com, which doesn’t appear to have any current deals and also doesn’t appear to have been updated since early this year. Deal-hunters may want to bookmark it, just in case they get their act together. Meanwhile, the other two sites are updated with new deals every Friday at 8am, which is pretty sweet if you ask us. We’re off to snag ourselves the last of the Maggie Moos gift certificates now, before you guys can get to them!

Bright & Early: Wave Of The Future Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We thought we’d seen it all, but now we’re getting solar-powered trash cans to cut down on the amount of times our trash needs to be emptied by the city in hopes of saving some cash. Weirdly enough, Lipscomb University has been on the forefront of this as the first testing site, because “you’d be surprised how much trash college students can generate.”  They’re also being tested in the ‘Noog. The new cans, called BigBellies, use solar energy to crush 180 gallons of trash into a 32-gallon bag.

  • Season to remember. Last night, Governor Phil and his wife held the sixth annual memorial for secondary victims of violent crime at the Capitol. Families were able to hang ornaments on wreaths while their family members’ names were read.
  • The kids are alright. Metro Police Chief Ronal Serpas is working with Metro schools to reduce truancy rates which he says are linked to juvenile crime in Nashville. So far they’ve reduced the number of truant students from 7,900 to 5,200.
  • Bits & pieces. An intruder who broke into campus apartments at Belmont last night is still on the run … Franklin-based Noranda Aluminum is planning to lay off 300 people … Mayor Dean is pulling for more paid leave for Metro employees, specifically for the day after Christmas … Nationwide, employers cut more jobs in November than they have in 34 years.
