Happy Hour: Have A Comcastic Weekend
- Following suit with the TVA and NES, Comcast is getting ready to jack up their rates by 3.5%. AT&T says they’re coming to the rescue, though. [WKRN]
- Speaking of bills and such, if you’re not registered to vote, you may be totally excited to hear that you can register to vote while you pay your astronomically high electric bill this month! [WTVF]
- We ranked fifth in the VP debate viewership last night behind Baltimore, St. Louis, Boston, and Norfolk (our old stompin’ grounds!) [WTVF]
- Preds captain Jason Arnott’s house caught on fire last night, but fortunately no one was hurt. Nashvillest loves you, Jason! [WTVF]
- Belmont is stepping up the security! You know, for the debate! By the way, did you hear…? [WKRN]

This Weekend: Sweeney Todd Opens At TPAC
We were fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at Tennessee Rep’s upcoming production of Sweeney Todd early last week, and let’s just say we’re excited for opening night tomorrow. It was their first LookIn of the season and was certainly a hit (or maybe that was the free wine), as we arrived to a full room of volunteers, theatre buffs and a handful of curious folk like ourselves. Other area theatre groups should take a hint and implement similar “sneak peek” programs – the LookIn was a very small time investment (and cost us nothing) that got us excited for much more to come.
We learned a few things about how the set for Sweeney Todd was created, and were treated to a few musical numbers by the cast. The set is… cool! It works just like the movie! With a chair… and a chute! And a knife! And they’re going to pull it off without Tim Burton! It may be taboo in some theatre circles to mention the film adaptation of Sweeney Todd, but we wanted to know just how closely the movie version followed the original play. So we asked. We were told that the movie is a lot darker and has a lot more blood & gore, while the play is more lighthearted and witty (at least as lighthearted as a murder and cannibalism can be). We’d be lying if we said we weren’t relieved.
Sweeney Todd opens at the Johnson Theater at TPAC tomorrow night and runs through October 18. We heard that several of the shows have almost sold out, so grab your tickets quickly. We’ll be there tomorrow night, and we may toss a review up over the weekend if we’re not too lazy.

Raisin’ McCain At The Belmont Mansion [John Rich]
If John McCain is going to be anywhere in the vicinity, then we know John Rich probably isn’t too far away. Tuesday’s debate is no exception since we’ve just learned that Rich will be at the Belmont Mansion early Tuesday morning to show off his rhinestone Wranglers to the world on a special live filming of the CBS Early Show. According to one undercover Nashvillest operative, the school sent out an email about it to student leaders this morning:
Hello! CBS News/The Early Show is broadcasting live from Belmont Mansion on Tuesday, October 7th to preview the second presidential debate. Our Anchor, Harry Smith, will be on site excited to interview students for our national morning news show. Country music star, John Rich, will also be performing live from Belmont Mansion on the quad!!
- We encourage signs of support for the candidates, school spirit & colors, and shout outs to Mom & Dad!
- Guests should arrive to Belmont Mansion on the quad at 5:30 a.m (we go live at 6am)
- Please pass along this information to all members of your student organizations. We would love to have all the students and faculty staying on campus during Fall Break to come out and show their excitment for this election on our broadcast!
Best we can tell, the event doesn’t look like it’s open to the public given the tight security on campus that day, though we couldn’t reach anyone at the Mansion for comment. Looks like this is one debate festivity we’ll just have to pass up. But for posterity’s sake, we’ll leave you with this:

UPDATE [3:53pm]: The Tennessean Election blog points us to this article saying that members of the community are invited to attend the CBS Early Show taping. So if you feel like scraping yourself out of bed at 5:30am, then go for it! And take pictures!

Photo Of The Day: October 3, 2008 [Feel Good Friday]
Happy Friday! Alpaca (cousin of the llama) at the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, taken by Bailey Visual Life.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry–we’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: Oh Yes They Can Edition
Good morning, Nashville. With just four days (and 10 hours and 52 minutes…) until the Belmont Debate-Oh-Eight, there’s no telling what the local political junkies have up their sleeves. Well, we can tell you one thing: Obama supporters are plotting a 4pm march from Hillsboro Village to Belmont’s campus on Tuesday evening, which should be a real sight to be seen. Belmont, always a step ahead, has actually fenced off their entire campus for just such an occasion. Over 200 people are expected to attend the march, so as always, keep your cameras and camera phones armed and ready. We’re depending on you guys to be Top Secret Nashvillest Operatives over the next few days and send us some good stuff.
- New jobs? Not that it’s really helping us warm up to the whole Bible Park USA idea, but developers are saying that the park could create as many as 1,800 jobs for the folks in Lebanon.
- Spreading the royalty love. Are your investments tanking? Maybe you should put your retirement in Garth Brooks’ latest hit. Or even Ozzy. Or maybe not.
- Bits & pieces. Did we seriously get frost last night? Yes, we seriously did … The Scene’s getting sued by a stripper, y’all! … Police have caught two men who appear to be suspects in Wednesday night’s Centennial Park murder.
