Happy Hour: Bad Analogies Edition

  • City Paper sounds off on Germantown: “No doubt, the profile of this historic North Nashville neighborhood has recently been elevated as dramatically as the John McCain presidency after his Sarah Palin pick.” [City Paper]
  • TSU found that flash drive they lost! In… Memphis? But what can you do? Those things practically have legs. [Tennessean]
  • The Williamson County GOP finally took down the offensive comment about the Nashville Kurdish community from their website. The chairman sort of apologized through WKRN, but the Kurds want an official statement. [WKRN]
  • According to some test samples of the Tennessee River (which would be the one that the Georgians want), it contains an awful lot of things that shouldn’t be found in a river: caffeine, antibiotics, antidepressants, and cholesterol medication. [WSMV]
  • We’re looking at a pretty depressing gas situation in Middle Tennessee for the next few weeks. Let the carpooling begin. [WKRN]

Nashville Universities In The News

It’s painfully obvious that school is back in session. Mafiaoza’s is impossible to enter on 2-for-1 Tuesdays and Belmont is ever flailing the “Debate ’08″ signage. We poke fun, but we really are proud of our local universities. We hear about Vandy all the time, but Belmont and Lipscomb have had some pretty significant accomplishments in recent weeks and we’d like to give them a pat on the back, too.

Belmont University set record enrollment at 5,000 students this year, a full two years ahead of schedule. It’s hard to imagine them all crammed on that campus, but they seem to be doing just fine (well, except for their parking woes). Lipscomb University also set record enrollment at 3,000 students this year. And aside from letting in massive amounts of freshmen, Belmont’s fairly new entrepreneurship program has been ranked one of the best in the nation by Entrepreneur Magazine and The Princeton Review. Not to be outdone, Lipscomb raced to have the first college of pharmacy in Middle Tennessee. Oh wait, then Belmont started one too, so no one really got to be first. And earlier this year, Belmont was paid a backhanded compliment by BusinessWeek, ranking as its 89th Best Undergrad B-School pick. B stands for Belmont, right?

Video Of The Day: September 15, 2008

Last Day of August from blatherskyte on Vimeo.

We decided to change things up a bit today and bring you the video of the day. Created and submitted by Twitterer @blatherskyte, “Last Day of August” takes a look at summer winding down to the backdrop of Radiohead.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Bright & Early: We Woke Up And It Was Fall Edition

Good morning, Nashville. You might have noticed that it’s a little chilly outside this morning, and we couldn’t be happier to tell you that it’s going to be like this all week. Don’t hang up the flip flops just yet, though, since it’s supposed to be back into the 80s next week. Either way, we’re getting the feeling that the season for epic corn mazes and hot apple cider is just around the corner.

  • Another data breach. After the city lost all of our voter information in January and Williamson County Schools accidentally posted everyone’s social security numbers all over the internet, we’re starting to wonder if our data is safe anywhere around here. Last week, even TSU got in on the action when a flash drive containing 9,000 students’ financial records went MIA.
  • West Nile, 3; Antioch, 0. Antioch is spraying for mosquitoes again after finding 6 more “batches” of the little buggers that tested positive for West Nile, making this the third try. Those of you in the area know the drill by now: Keep the kids and the pets inside this evening. The trucks will be out around dusk.
  • Monday morning bonus. Clarksville mayor Johnny Piper busts some serious moves during the father-daughter dance at his daughter’s wedding reception; becomes instant Youtube celebrity. Video here, and it’s about 1:30 in.
  • Bits & pieces. Forget the armadillos–we’re bracing for a coyote invasion … Williamson County makes more headlines with borderline racism … Vince Young drama aside, the Titans had a great outing against the Bengals, winning 24-7.
