Raisin’ McCain: John Rich Approves This Message

When we saw John Rich perform at the John McCain Town Hall Meeting a couple months ago, we had no idea his passion for the campaign ran this deep. Enjoy his brand new song, “Raising McCain,” which you can download for free from johnrich.com.

Raisin’ McCain
Music & lyrics by John Rich

Well we’re all just raisin’ McCain
Everywhere across the USA
You can get on the train or get out of the way
We’re all just raisin’ McCain

And we’re all just raisin’ McCain
Everywhere across the USA
You can get on the train or get out of the way
We’re all just raisin’ McCain

Well he got shot down in a Vietnam town
Fighting for the red, white and blue
And they locked him up in the Hanoi Hilton
Thinking they could break him in two

He stayed strong, stayed extra long
‘Til they let all the other boys out
Now we’ve got a real man with an American plan
We’re going to put him in the big White House

Well we’re all just raisin’ McCain
Everywhere across the USA
You can get on the train or get out of the way
We’re all just raisin’ McCain

Play that American guitar, son
And we’re all just raisin’ McCain
Everywhere across the USA
You can get on the train or get out of the way

We’re all just raisin’ McCain
I said we’re all just raisin’ McCain
Everywhere across the USA
You can get on the train or get out of the way
We’re all just raisin’ McCain

Well you can get on the train or get out of the way
We’re all just raisin’ McCain

The Weekendist: We Scream For Ice Cream Edition

Nashville, we’ve made it through another work week. The good and bad news is that there’s so much going on this weekend, we aren’t going to get to recuperate much. We know you’ll be busy doing your tax-free shopping for the next year, but try to make some time to check out our picks below.

SATURDAY

Friendship Fiesta at Ten Thousand Villages: Celebrate friendship and fair trade with Ten Thousand Villages from 10am-6pm. Sample their fair trade snacks and enjoy live music all day.

Fresh Blends Grand Opening at 1888 Eastland Ave: Our friends over at Fresh Blends Juice & Smoothie Bar are finally open for business. They actually opened yesterday, but their grand opening celebration is this weekend. Stop by anytime during business hours (8am-5pm) to support them and maybe score some free stuff too.

The Sugar Bar at the Nashville Farmer’s Market: Starting this week, get fresh pie and cupcakes from our friends at The Sugar Bar. This should tide you over until they open their retail space in 12th South on a still TBD date. The menu this Saturday includes vanilla, carrot and red velvet cupcakes, along with cherry and bourbon chocolate pecan pie. We’re already drooling.

Black 13 Tattoo Parlor Grand Opening at The Mercy Lounge: You know the drill. Free music, free stuff, free fun. We already wrote about it.

SUNDAY
Mayor’s First Day Festival at the Sommet Center: An annual celebration of our metro schools, bring the kids from 2pm-5pm and try to get them excited to be going back to school in just one measly little week. We’d need bribery, too.

Miss Martha’s Crankin’ Contest at First Presbyterian Church: We’re so excited about this that we gave it its’ own post, so read up on it and we’ll see you there! 4pm-6pm, admission is $8 for ages 6 and over, $5 for ages 2-5, and free for children under 2.

Waves On Waves Live Concert Taping at 12th & Porter: Again, already covered. But we felt like we should probably re-emphasize the point that you should be there.

Happy Hour: What’s Snakin’?

  • Two Murfreesboro police officers had an exciting afternoon when they were called out to “arrest” a 7-foot boa that’s being blamed for the untimely disappearance of a pet cat. Better yet is the fact that some other poor officer has to watch the darn thing at the station until the someone comes forward and claims it. What a weekend. [Nashville Is Talking]
  • As we’ve been reporting, the state buyouts aren’t going quite as well as planned. Without enough people accepting them before the August 5th deadline, the state could begin slicing jobs in January. [Tennessean]
  • Shelbyville’s resident Somali expert and future Pulitzer winner Brian Mosely has dutifully alerted the community to the utter blasphemy going down at the Tyson plant: They’re canceling Labor Day and giving people Eid off instead, which is a pretty big Muslim holiday. Because they have so many of them Muslims there. [Times-Gazette]
  • A weird rash of tire-slashing has been happening downtown on the touristy part of Broadway, between First and Fifth Aves. None of the cars have been broken into. [WSMV]

Photo Of The Day: August 1, 2008

Nashville has a lot of pretty buildings that we like to take pictures of, but this photo by dustinlane puts the skyline at a different perspective. We love the way the telephone lines frame the cityscape, and something about this photo just makes us feel right at home.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

These Are A Few Of Our Favorite Things [Free Stuff]

Free music. Free stuff. Free drinks, even. This weekend brings us two chances to enjoy the best things in life – for free.

Saturday: Black 13 Tattoo Parlor Grand Opening at The Mercy Lounge. Free for 21+, or just $3 for 18-20. The aforementioned “free stuff” will be there in the form of plenty of giveaways, and the free music is courtesy of a giant bill of performers. Autovaughn, Kyle Andrews, Red White Blue, Leigh Nash, Ricky Young, Space Capone, Panty Raid, Dean Alexander & The Delux and additional entertainment (as if all that isn’t enough) by the Nashville B-Boys and Houston Alexander. Oh, and there’s going to be an art gallery too. Come one, come all (9pm).

Sunday: Waves On Waves Live Video Shoot at 12th & Porter. Longtime Nashville band Thornton has reincarnated as Waves On Waves, and they’re pretty good. They need people to come watch their (free) show on Sunday night, drink free booze, and win free stuff. The only catch is that you might be videotaped while doing any or all of the above. Sounds like a small price to pay. Doors at 8pm, taping starts at 9pm. This would also be the one time in Nashville that it’s not cool to show up late, so keep that it mind.

Bright & Early: Welcome To August Edition

Good morning, Nashville. We realized while driving to work this morning that not only is today the first day of August, but next week is also the last week we won’t have to drive through eleven school zones on the way to the interstate. While we might complain about the inconvenience on our commute, several hundred low-income schoolchildren get to go on a back-to-school shopping spree, courtesy of Walmart and Youth Encouragement Services. That’s one way to make going back to school at the beginning of August more exciting.

  • The cabbies revolt. After weeks of petitions, strikes and protests, the taxi drivers in Nashville are now taking steps toward being recognized as a formal union. We’d be on strike too, if we made $2.02 an hour. Pony up, Allied Cab.
  • Blogger drama. Political Salsa blogger Tim Chavez is calling out the Nashville Scene on their “Ask a Mexican” column and logo, which features a cartoon Hispanic man with a gold tooth. He claims that it’s racist, and they’ve got an attitude about it, as usual. Honestly, we wondered why no one had said anything sooner.
  • Bits & pieces. Undercover officers buy cocaine from a barbershop in LaVergne … 400 more state employees need to agree to a buyout … Williamson county voters have 8 candidates to choose from when they vote for sheriff this week … The Sounds have won twice in a row from the road for the first time since the beginning of July (happy August).

Cold Treats: Tasti D-Lite Comes To Town

If you’re like us, paying New York only the occasional visit, you may not have heard of Tasti D-Lite. We did some research and discovered a tasty frozen yogurt treat with a cultish following of passionate and loyal fans, which can never be a bad thing. Previously confined to New York, New Jersey, Texas and Florida, Tasti D-Lite is expanding. At least 16 stores have been contracted in Tennessee, and yes, they’re coming to Nashville.

We’ve been promised a similar style frozen yogurt from the new Provence location opening soon in Green Hills, and there’s the new-ish Yogurt Oasis hidden on West End, but Nashville is devoid of Pinkberry, Red Mango and the thousand other yogurt knock-off chains. We’re partial to our local businesses, but this is one national chain we’re eager to start seeing around town. Welcome to Nashville, Tasti D-Lite. [Thanks to Jamie R. for the tip!]
