Photo Of The Day: August 29, 2008
Photo walks seem to be all the rage in Nashville since the weather has been better, and we’ve been seeing tons of great shots come through the pool. Kyle Dreier snapped this photo of Mennonite evangelists during the Nashville leg of the worldwide Scott Kelby photo walk, which took place on August 23rd in 231 cities around the world.
Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Our Favorite Freebie Yet: Rita’s Italian Ice

Rita’s Italian Ice is one of those things we’ve missed most since moving to Nashville. We hail from Virginia, where the Italian Ice flows like water (and ironically is also known as Water Ice in select locations). A little birdie told us that two Rita’s locations were coming to the Nashville area, and although they’re inconveniently located in Hermitage and Mt. Juliet, we’ll take what we can get.
The Hermitage location (4219 Lebanon Pike) is now open, and will be dishing out free regular sized Italian Ices through the end of next week. They’re even open on Labor Day. Conveniently, we’re off work on Labor Day, and it seems that a trip to Hermitage may be in our future. Rita’s is famous for their freebies, generously giving away free ices on the first day of Spring every year as well. So that’s two things to look forward to: Spring and Mt. Juliet. Oh, and we’ve heard rumors of sweet tea italian ice. Stay southern, Rita’s.

This Weekend: Franklin Jazz Festival
The 19th annual Franklin Jazz Festival kicks off tomorrow in downtown Franklin (their website is slightly reminiscent of Jazzercise, but we guess that counts). From 5pm-10pm on Saturday and Sunday, enjoy “cool jazz, mouth-watering food and refreshing drinks” in the square, and help raise support for the Epilepsy Foundation Middle & West Tennessee. Admission is $5 per day.

Bright & Early: Three-Day Weekend Edition
Good morning, Nashville, and happy Friday. While we at Nashvillest were busy with our disastrous Fantasy Football draft last night, the Titans were wrapping up their preseason with a 23-21 win against the Packers. Bad news is, our favorite QB Vince Young messed up his hand. They say it’s just a little bruise, but we’re skeptical. The real season starts next Sunday when the Titans go head-to-head against Jacksonville at LP Field, which means we’ll be staying as far away from downtown as we possibly can.
- Friends don’t let friends. Tennessee state troopers will be out on the roads this weekend keeping the roads safe for the rest of us while they keep an eye out for drunk drivers. So be careful out there this weekend and remember to add Zingo to your speed dial.
- Murder still a mystery. Police are scraping around for clues about what led to the double-shooting of Vandy professor Pierre Colas. So far, they’re questioning three suspects but still aren’t much closer to figuring out a motive.
- Bits & pieces. The lawsuit has officially been filed against the Davidson Co. Election Commission for this week’s English First stunt … Parents with kids at Battleground Academy in Franklin are worried that toxic chemicals in a nearby creek could be putting kids at risk … In honor of Hurricane Katrina’s 3-year anniversary, the Parthenon is hosting a photography exhibit with pictures of the aftermath from now through December.

Happy Hour: The Dolly Has Spoken

- Apparently there were some rumors floating around this week that one Miss Dolly Parton had kicked the bucket. But alas, the Dolly scoffs at death. [WSMV]
- The Tennessee State Fair is going dry this year and only selling alcohol at the grandstand events. Guess we’ll be keeping up our reputation after all. [Tennessean]
- Between Bigfoot, water wars, and the Russian invasion, we’re thinking our neighbors to the south may need their own heading soon: This time the Georgians are trying to break the world record for Most Scarecrows In One Location. [WSMV]
- The coast is clear, say the feds. You can totally binge on all the tomatoes and jalapeños you want. Can someone tell Taco Bell to take down their “DANGER: JALAPEÑOS” sign? [WSMV]

Regular contributor HereOnTheRoad took this shot with a nod to American Gothic at the Farmer’s Market. It reminds us a lot of this other favorite of ours that she took a few months ago, but we can’t help ourselves–We’re suckers for creative portraits.

Zipcars Are Here (If You’re In College, That Is)

We mentioned a few weeks ago that Vanderbilt was rolling out a beta test of the Zipcar service. Today, the official program launched at both Belmont and Vanderbilt universities, with a total of seven cars across the two campuses. This is just the beginning for Nashville, as Zipcar has been in discussion with the Nashville Downtown Partnership to introduce cars downtown and eventually in other areas of metro Nashville. Three parking spaces for Zipcars have already been secured downtown, and the initial target date for having Zipcars on the road is September 1. With September lurking just a few days away and no sign of Zipcars, we’re not sure if that still holds true, but we’re eagerly awaiting this step forward for car-less commuters.
College students and faculty will see a reduced membership fee of $35/year and an automatic credit of the membership fee toward the driving fees in the first month. Students ages 18-20 who would traditionally be hard pressed to find a rental car are welcome to use the Zipcar campus program, although only members who are 21+ are allowed to use the nationwide Zipcar service. Residents who are not students but may live within walking distance of the universities are welcome to join the campus Zipcar programs, but the membership fee will more than double ($75, and $50/year after the first year). With such a limited amount of cars in the program at this point we aren’t attracted to the option, but it’s nice to know it’s there. And we’re positive that car-less freshmen (as we once were) will be rejoicing all over town.
