Happy Hour: A Very Dark Knight
- Word on the street is that Karl Rove will be in town next Saturday, July 26th, drumming up support and for John McCain at the 32nd Annual Statesman’s Dinner. Also on the roster are former senator Bill Frist, Senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, and Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey. Our sources tell us that Obama supporters are already planning a picket demonstration. [TNGOP]
- The FDA has given us the all-clear signal for eating tomatoes even though the killer tomatoes are far from gone. We still suggest you buy local. [WKRN]
- Tennessee Vols junior offensive guard Jacques McClendon benched 645 lbs., shattering the club record of 550 lbs. Freak. [Tennessean]
- Yep, Tennesseans are still losing their jobs at a rate that’s well above the national average. [WTVF]
- The Preds have released their 2008-2009 schedule which kicks off on October 10th in St. Louis against the Blues. [Nashville Predators]

Time Turns Electric: Phish (Sort Of) Lives On In Nashville
One of the perks of being heralded as the “Music City” is that we often are privy to musical experiences that other cities would never even dream of witnessing. Even though the big tours sometimes skip over us, we get Ben Folds playing with the Nashville Symphony this September and Taylor Swift recording an episode of Crossroads with Def Leppard in October. And we think that’s pretty cool.
Here’s another one for you. Trey Anastasio (yes, he’s out of jail), better known as the frontman of Phish, has teamed up with local composer Don Hart to create an orchestral work called “Time Turns Electric.” And its inaugural performance on September 27 will be right here in Nashville, TN at the Ryman Auditorium. Even if you’re not a Phish fan, this is going to be a pretty memorable event.

There are more ways to capture Nashville than through photos. That’s why we decided to change things up a bit today and bring you a painting by local artist and geek, Brad Blackman. If you like this one as much as we did, check out Brad’s other work at www.bradblackman.com.

Walmart: Tamed In Tennessee?
Yesterday in Nashville, Glen Gabardi, vice president and regional manager of Walmart, announced that Tennessee is one of the first states where Walmart is increasing their dependence on local produce.
Is this a “step in the right direction” for Walmart? It supports our local economy and reduces Walmart’s environmental footprint, so it’s certainly not hurting things. But if we have to be honest, we’re not big fans of Walmart here at Nashvillest. It’s a hassle to get to, an unpleasant shopping experience, and there’s been reports of some shady stuff going on behind the scenes (if you buy into that sort of thing). But over the past few years, Walmart has been trying to reinvent their image. They offer a host of environmentally-friendly products, they’re pushing CFLs like nobody’s business, and they even offer their own Sam’s Choice brand of fair trade coffee. Tennessee may also house the one of the new prototype Walmart stores, re-branded with their new logo. Maybe they just like us better than the rest of the states.
There are two camps when it comes to Walmart – Those who shop there, and those who don’t. We’re not here to criticize either one, but we do want to know if Walmart’s new peace offerings are working. Has anyone switched from one camp to the other? Will you be shopping at Walmart for your local produce?

Bright & Early: Watch Where You Step Edition
Good morning, Nashville. A Brentwood Library branch is expanding, paving a parking lot over an old Indian burial ground from the 1400s. When the library was first built about 10 years ago, many artifacts including graves were removed from the ground, understandably upsetting the Native American community. This time they’ve at least done an archaeological dig and study of the area before they coated it in concrete, but they discovered at least two infant graves that they’ll be leaving as unpaved islands in the middle of the parking lot. Creepy?
- More Nashville newcomers. Zipcar, a super-cheap car rental service used in a lot of other cities, may be coming to Nashville within the next few months. A pretty unique twist on public transportation, they’d primarily be used for the folks living downtown who don’t need cars all the time.
- Rotten neighbors. The Tennessee Valley Authority is pretty much polluting the whole Southeast with their coal plants and now the affected states are calling for tighter restrictions on the smoke stacks. That sort of explains all the air quality alerts we’ve been seeing lately.
- Bits & pieces. The missing boy for which an Amber Alert was issued yesterday has been found safe in Maury County. No details yet about where or how … Some blasting company in Brentwood almost blew us all up yesterday … The number of people using MTA has increased 11 percent in the past year … $4 gas is here.
