Happy Hour: Feeling Texty

  • Headlines that make us go “huh?”: Police Wnt U To Fight Crime W/Txt Messages. We guess they’re making good use of our proud “Southeast’s Textiest City” title. [WTVF]
  • Paul House, who’s been on death row for almost 23 years, was sent home today on house arrest. New DNA evidence came to light, causing a judge to grant him a retrial. [WTVF]
  • Metro Council has approved a new zoning bill that will allow rehab services to be on agriculturally-zoned land. A few months ago, the group Teen Challenge sued the city for $650K because they had to close their doors when the measure wasn’t passed before. [City Paper]
  • An 11 year-old boy accidentally shot a 12 year-old girl in the head this morning in LaVergne. The girl is being held at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition. [WKRN]

Shan Foster Is Really, Really Happy To Be In The NBA

In typical Nashville fashion, Vanderbilt forward Shan Foster (recently drafted by the Dallas Mavericks) is more than just a great basketball player. He’s also a singer/songwriter. And he’s really, really happy about being in the NBA – so much so that he wrote a song about it (and posted it on YouTube for the world to see). It’s sort of endearing, and we hope that the Mavs won’t give him too much of a hard time for it. Sing it, Shan!

Photo Of The Day: July 2, 2008

Aptly titled “Lightshow of the gods,” this incredible capture of the sky behind the gargoyles on the Parthenon pretty much had us scraping our jaws off the floor. Great job, vistabonita!

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Give A Little: Donate Blood This Month

In honor of Nashville’s 16 year olds who are able to donate blood (as of yesterday), we encourage you to find a local donation site and give blood this week. You can even join American Red Cross Racing and “race” to earn points that are redeemable for an assortment of Red Cross racing gear.

Nashville Blood Center (2201 Charlotte Ave)
9am-6:30pm Monday – Thursday, 7am-3pm Friday, 7am-2pm Saturday

[We know it's not Halloween, but this photo by flickr user dannydanny had us in stitches. Err...]

Bright & Early: Huddled Masses Edition

Good morning, Nashville. If you’ve been keeping score in Councilman Eric Crafton’s English First debate, he’s now saying that he has half of the 10,000 signatures he needs to get the ordinance on the ballot this November. If it passes, it’ll require that all city business, communications and publications have to take place in English. Crafton managed to get it passed last year by the City Council, but got the big veto by Mayor Purcell. This time around, he’s sending out a couple thousand petition postcards to gather support. We’re just wondering where ours are–we feel sort of left out!

  • Indy breaks up. A few weeks ago, we heard about the plans for the State Fairgrounds and neighboring Superspeedway. Now Speed TV is reporting that the Indy Racing League may be leaving the Superspeedway out of the 2009 schedule. Nothing’s been confirmed yet, but it could have a big impact on what the city decides to do with the track.
  • Oh noes! The fountains at the Bicentennial Mall, which represent the 31 rivers in Tennessee, aren’t working because of some system glitch that no one can figure out how to fix. “Typically, parents bring children to play in the fountains everyday,” reports City Paper, “but not this year.” Not that we’re bitter or anything.
  • Bits & pieces. AT&T statewide cable comes to Tennessee to the tune of $400M; somewhere, Comcast is weeping … The Tennessean will stop delivering to a handful of counties … NAACP is holding a press conference about mortgage discrimination this morning at 10:30am … 100 gallons of diesel is spilled and cleaned up on I-65 near Dickerson … The Sounds actually won, beating Memphis 5-1.

What’s Going On With The Gulch?

The Gulch – that weird triangular spot downtown, where 12th turns into 11th and before you know it, you’re down by the train tracks and can’t seem to find Broadway (even though every other numbered street going north runs into Broadway).

There are big plans for The Gulch. Plans that paint a picture comparable to Soho, Dallas, or Santa Monica. Seems like a little much for a space that is currently home to hardly a handful of restaurants, a venue, some construction and a dismal parking situation. Local staples Ru Sans, Sambuca, Watermark, Station Inn and Bar Twenty3 make up the current landscape. So what will take The Gulch from don’t-blink-you’ll-miss-it to retail powerhouse status?

  • The ICON High-Rise Condos – Nearing completion, this 22-story mecca of “urban living” is set to kick start development in The Gulch. Buyers begin moving in this summer.
  • Urban Outfitters – The first big name retailer to enter The Gulch (and their first Tennessee location), hopefully to be followed by many more. This fall, Urban Outfitters will move into the space that currently houses music venue City Hall.
  • Old & New – This week, it was confirmed that Urban Flats Flatbread Co. will open in the retail space within the ICON tower. Bongo Java bought a building last year, and Provence Breads & Cafe will be expanding into a full retail space within the next year at their Gulch location.

What do you think – can The Gulch pull it off? Will it be the next up and coming urban hot spot in town?
