Happy Hour: Plains, Trains, & Automobiles

  • Commuter rail Music City Star spent its Federal Funds a little faster than anticipated, and now it’s about $750,000 in the hole. And also, no one really uses it. [Tennessean]
  • Democratic superdelegate Lincoln Davis of Pall Mall, TN (East TN–enough said) launched our fair in the national spotlight today when he said he was holding off on endorsing Obama because “[h]e’s got some bad connections, and he may be terrorist connected for all I can tell. It sounds kind of like he may be.” We hoping that was some awful misquote. [City Paper]
  • A 12-year old North Nashville boy survived an accidental shooting by his cousin when they found the father’s gun in the boy’s home. The bullet just barely missed his heart, and he’s expected to make a full recovery. [WKRN]
  • Titans wide receiver Brandon Jones was caught toting a .32-calliber handgun around in his bags at the Nashville Airport this morning, allegedly left over from target practice. We’re not sure how you accidentally bring a gun to the airport in a day where most of us aren’t even bringing liquids, though. [City Paper]

Live On The Interwebs: Bonnaroo

Like a lot of you guys, we’re missing out on Bonnaroo this year and we’re not really thrilled about that. Fortunately AT&T is good for more than just the iPhone and they’re broadcasting the entire thing online in the AT&T Blue Room. It’s not quite the same as being there, but we’ve checked it out and the quality gets two Nashvillest thumbs up. Granted, when we flipped it on this morning, we were only seeing live shots of some sunburned attendees sitting in lawn chairs in the middle of a field holding electric fans, but we’re betting the concert footage is still better than nothing.

On a related note, we learned this morning that Metallica played a pre-Bonnaroo secret show at the Basement last night for about 175 people and we can’t believe we missed that either.

Photo Of The Day: June 13, 2008

This capture comes to us from WJ11, who we’re guessing found this old sign somewhere downtown. A lot of Nashville businesses have managed to preserve their signs from way back when people still made cool ones, and we loved the colors and character of this shot.

Photo Of The Day will be a recurring feature for Nashvillest as long you keep giving us stuff to post. Don’t worry- We’ll give you props. Just add them to the pool or tag them with “Nashvillest” if you’re feeling lazy.

Nashville Farmer’s Market: More Than Veggies

The Nashville Farmer’s Market has been a Nashvillest favorite for years. The ethnic groceries and delicious food stands compliment what seems to be a mile-long stretch of fresh produce and greenery. It’s a fun outing on a lazy weekend, or a great place to grab a bite to eat when you’re in the area. But we were surprised when we found out about all the events that happen at the Nashville Farmer’s Market year round – Crafting, cookouts, celebrations and more.

June 21: Chefs At The Market
July 5: Meet Your Farmer
July 19: Chefs At The Market, Summer Grill Party
August 16: Market House Grand Opening Celebration
September 15-21: Buy Local Week
October 18: Fall Harvest Festival
November 15: Turnip Green Festival
November 29-December 30: Holiday Market

Every 3rd Saturday through August, there’s also live music in the Market Midway. Nothing like a little local music to make outdoor produce shopping in the heat more bearable, we say.

Bright & Early: Color Us Puzzled Edition

Good morning, Nashville. There were some changes finally announced yesterday in Metro Nashville Public Schools to fend off a probable state coup that could happen if they can’t get their act together. In addition to lots of changes being made to the departments, they’ll be putting some extra personnel into place: Namely, some more assistant superintendents and associate assistant superintendents. Sounds like it could get a little confusing, but then again they still don’t have a superintendent for the assistant superintendents and the associate assistant superintendents to assist. All this talk almost, almost makes us miss Pedro. Confusion aside, though, the changes seem to be going over well.

  • Happy endings. A 3-year old girl wandered off from her East Nashville home yesterday was finally returned home safely. She was found walking around near Rosebank and Riverside drives by herself before police found her and tracked down her mom.
  • If we ran the zoo. The Nashville Zoo is panhandling for $5M from the city for improvement and expansion of the grounds, which they say they’re outgrowing. Not that we don’t love a good zoo trip every now and again, but we can’t exactly forget about everything else that’s been sliced from the budget lately.
  • Bits & pieces. Portland distribution plant closing and putting 148 people out of a job … Guy in LaVergne caught with a whopping 637 hits of LSD … Police find a gun in Maplewood student’s car … Titans make major changes to tight end position.

Department of Bad Ideas: Let’s Go For A Swim

Last fall, five city officials and members of the Metro Council started planning a little swim across the Cumberland to prove to us that the Cumberland isn’t nearly as gross and polluted as we all think it is. It’s been a rough road for the Fab Five, who have faced nothing but controversy since they hatched the idea back in October. The latest in the saga comes to us from the Tennessean, who published a colorful email exchange yesterday between swim captain/Councilwoman Emily Evans and swimteam archenemy/Councilman-at-Large Charlie Tygard. In his letter, Tygard basically outlines every reason why the thinks taking a dip in the Cumberland is a terrible idea, and then Evans does her best to defend herself against his “ceaseless quest” to start fights on the Metro Council. We’re guessing it’s only a matter of time before they pull a Mount Pleasant, but in the mean time we’re reminded of why we love city politics. And we don’t know about you guys, but no one could pay us a large enough sum of money to paddle ourselves across the river.
